Portland Bangers continued their strong start to the USL League Two season Sunday night, grinding out a physical 1-0 win over Snohomish United at Lents Park in front of another loud home crowd.

After opening the year with a dominant 3-0 road win over FC Olympia, the Bangers were tested in a much tighter contest this time around. Snohomish arrived looking organized defensively and willing to slow the tempo, forcing Portland to stay patient for much of the night.

The breakthrough finally came in the 69th minute when Vance Sheffield found the back of the net to give Portland the lead. The goal rewarded a sustained stretch of pressure from the Bangers, who had spent most of the second half pushing numbers forward and forcing Snohomish deeper into its own half.

Things quickly turned tense after the opener. Daniel Palomino picked up a yellow card in the 58th minute as the match became increasingly physical, while both sides turned to the bench throughout the second half searching for fresh legs. Portland manager rotations paid off late as the Bangers successfully closed the match out despite continued pressure from Snohomish.

The result gives Portland back-to-back clean sheets to open the campaign and continues a growing trend in this matchup. The Bangers have now beaten Snohomish in consecutive meetings by a combined score of 2-0.

For a club known as “the weirdest party in town,” Portland is suddenly becoming known for something else too: winning ugly when it matters.
