Ayden Jackson Enrolls at USF After Breakout All-Sun Belt Season at Georgia Southern

TAMPA. Ayden Jackson did not need a soft landing after Georgia Southern. He needed a bigger stage, a secondary that could use another ballhawk, and a program that still treats the transfer portal like a roster construction tool instead of a rumor mill.

In January 2026, the Marietta, Ga., safety entered the portal, then committed and enrolled at South Florida. The Bulls get a three-year Eagle with 34 games, 18 starts, and a 2025 tape that finally matched the athlete Walton High always advertised.

Jackson arrives as more than depth. He arrives as a proven Sun Belt starter coming off a career year, already on the Shriners Children’s East-West Bowl 1000 for the 2027 cycle, and already wearing green and gold in Tampa.

From Walton receiver to Sun Belt safety

Before the interceptions and the all-conference ballot, Jackson was a first-team all-state wideout at Walton High under coach Daniel Bruner. As a senior in Georgia's 5-7A classification, he caught for 932 yards and 11 touchdowns, then flipped the field on defense with 25 tackles, 35 pass breakups, and two interceptions. First-team all-county. First-team all-region. First-team all-state. The dual-side résumé made him a natural college defensive back project with receiver feet.

Offers arrived in May 2022 from Holy Cross and Fordham. Georgia Southern offered that September. Jackson committed Dec. 20, 2022, signed the next day, and enrolled with the Eagles on June 1, 2023. The path was clean. The growth curve was not instant.

2023 was special teams and snaps that teach patience: 10 games, 97 total plays, six tackles, one breakup. He saw Wisconsin and Ball State on the road, then finished with two tackles and a breakup against Ohio in the Myrtle Beach Bowl. Bowl game No. 1. Role player No. 1. Foundation year.

2024 was the promotion. Eleven games, nine starts, 600 snaps. Thirty-five tackles, 3.5 for loss, a fumble recovery, a breakup, a hurry. First career start came in a win at Georgia State. He stacked four-tackle games against Marshall and Ole Miss, then six stops with 1.5 TFL in a win over South Alabama. In the New Orleans Bowl against Sam Houston, he added four tackles, a TFL, and a fumble recovery. Honor Roll in the spring. The starter identity stuck.

2025: the breakout that forced the portal conversation

Last season is the reason USF fans should care. Jackson played all 13 games, started nine, and lived on the field for 806 snaps. Seventy-four tackles. 3.5 TFL. A team-high three interceptions. Three pass breakups. A fumble recovery. A hurry. PFSN third-team All-Sun Belt. That is not a depth-chart footnote. That is a featured defender in a Powered-up Group of Five secondary.

The tape had signature weeks. Eight tackles, a hurry, and his first collegiate interception in a win over Jacksonville State. Seven tackles, a TFL, and a forced fumble against Georgia State. Team-high nine tackles plus a late pick in a win at App State. Another nine-tackle lead, with a TFL, in a win over Coastal Carolina. Two tackles, half a TFL, an interception, and a breakup in a win at Marshall. Three tackles in the Birmingham Bowl win over App State. Three bowl appearances across three seasons. Consistent availability. Rising production.

Career line leaving Statesboro: 115 tackles, seven tackles for loss, three interceptions, across 34 games and 18 starts. Underdog Dynasty later ranked him among USF's top portal gains for 2026, noting the Bulls needed help after losing secondary starters and that Jackson's 2025 season ranked him fourth on Georgia Southern in tackles and first in interceptions.

Why USF, and why the Shrine Bowl buzz matters

Jackson entered the transfer portal on Jan. 2, 2026, and committed to the Bulls on Jan. 6. 247Sports had him as a three-star transfer (84 rating) from the Georgia Southern Eagles, listed at 5-foot-11, 185 pounds, out of Walton in Marietta. On3 shows him enrolled at USF as jersey No. 5, a safety with portal industry juice around the mid-tier national board and a top-70ish safety range depending on the outlet.

The draft-adjacent signal is newer and louder. Jackson landed on the Shriners Children's East-West Bowl 1000, the preliminary watch list for players eligible for the 2027 Shrine Bowl and the 2027 NFL Draft class. The list already tags him under South Florida, safety, Group of Five, AAC. That is scouts saying the 2025 film traveled. For a former Georgia high school receiver still climbing the defensive learning curve, it is validation that the next chapter is not a soft rebuild. It is a push year.

USF's official roster bio mirrors the Georgia Southern production and frames him as a transfer defensive back who joined in January 2026. Criminal Justice major. Son of Keasha and Anwar Jackson. Sibling Anwar. Born Ayden Brice Jackson on April 12. The personal details are simple. The football details are not: three bowl games, all-conference recognition, and a portal move into an American Conference program that has been aggressive about restocking.

What he brings to the Bulls secondary

Scheme fits change. Traits do not. Jackson brings range from a receiver background, tackling volume from two years of starting snaps, and ball production that arrived in year three. He can play safety, contribute on special teams from day one of fall camp, and compete for a starting job in a secondary that needed experience after portal attrition.

The 2025 film shows a defender who finds the ball late in games: the App State interception, the Marshall takeaway package, the Georgia State forced fumble. Those are winning plays, not empty box-score padding. USF did not add a project who might develop. They added a third-year contributor who already developed, then bet on himself in January.

The story so far, and the next test

High school star at Walton. Special-teamer in 2023. Starter in 2024. All-conference playmaker in 2025. Bull in 2026. The arc is linear in the best way. No mystery injuries rewriting the narrative. No empty hype cycle. Just snaps, production, and a portal decision that moved him from Statesboro to Tampa while the Shrine Bowl watch list was already being assembled.

Fall camp will decide how loud Jackson's name gets in American Conference previews. The résumé already says he belongs in those conversations. Three interceptions and 74 tackles do not transfer automatically. The habits that produced them do.
