LIV Golf UK Round 3: Lucas Herbert Grinds Through the Wind to Keep a Three-Shot Lead

Lucas Herbert shot a windblown 69 and holed a closing birdie to lead Bryson DeChambeau by three entering Sunday, as Cameron Smith tied a LIV record with eight straight birdies and Ripper GC stayed nine clear.

The wind finally showed up at JCB Golf & Country Club on Saturday, and the birdie parade of the first two days turned into something closer to a grind. Lucas Herbert did not need fireworks. A steady round and one last putt were enough.

Herbert shot a 3-under 69 in the third round of LIV Golf UK by JCB to reach 20 under and carry a three-shot lead into Sunday over Bryson DeChambeau, who posted a 68. Tyrrell Hatton is alone in third at 15 under after a 67, and Herbert's Ripper GC teammate Cameron Smith tied a league record on the way to a 66 and sits fourth at 14 under. Ripper leads the team race by nine at 41 under.

Grinding It Out

The numbers show how much the course changed. The field's stroke average rose to 71.53, roughly half a shot tougher than either of the first two rounds, as the breeze stiffened and dried the place out. Herbert, who opened 61 and 66, adjusted accordingly. "It's a bit of a grind out there," Herbert said.

The key moment came on Herbert's final hole. DeChambeau had just birdied two in a row to close the gap, and Herbert answered with a 7-foot birdie putt to restore the three-shot cushion. Herbert also got up and down on all four occasions that called for it, a perfect scrambling day when the misses mattered more. Through 54 holes Herbert has led after 53 of them, with Friday's brief DeChambeau surge the only blip. "Pretty happy to get off the course with a three-shot lead," Herbert said.

DeChambeau Keeps Knocking

DeChambeau has now shot three straight rounds in the 60s, and Saturday's 68 included only one bogey. That is the kind of round that usually gains ground on a leader in the wind. Instead the Crushers GC captain picked up a single shot on the day. DeChambeau knows what the final round requires. "It's going to take something good and special tomorrow to catch him," DeChambeau said.

Hatton, playing in front of the home crowd, came out flying with birdies on three of his first four holes. Bogeys at the sixth and 10th slowed the charge, but the 67 moved the Englishman from seven back to five back. "The conditions were definitely tougher today with the wind being stronger," Hatton said.

Smith's Back-Nine Blitz

The round of the day for drama belonged to Smith. The Ripper captain made eight consecutive birdies on the back nine, matching the LIV Golf record for most in a row that Sebastian Munoz set in 2025, and needed only nine putts on that nine, a league record of its own. The streak turned a solid week into a serious one, with a 66 and a jump to solo fourth.

The lowest score of the day came from Abraham Ancer, whose 65 vaulted the Torque GC player into a tie for fifth with Harold Varner III at 13 under. Byeong Hun An is seventh at 11 under, and Marc Leishman, Caleb Surratt and Charles Howell III share eighth at 9 under. Joaquin Niemann's 68 was the only bogey-free round on the board. Jon Rahm, the season points leader, shot 71 and sits at 2 under.

Ripper Wobbles, Then Steadies

For a few holes, the team race got genuinely interesting. Ripper's four players were a combined 6 over through four holes, and LIV Golf noted that the nine-shot overnight lead was briefly wiped out. Smith's birdie streak put the cushion back, and Herbert's 69 and Leishman's 71 held it there. Travis Smyth, filling in for the injured Elvis Smylie, had a rough day with a 78, and Ripper still finished 4 under for the round and 41 under overall.

Crushers matched that 4-under round to stay nine back at 32 under. Legion XIII had a much better day, posting 10 under behind Hatton's 67, a pair of 70s from Caleb Surratt and Tom McKibbin and a 71 from Rahm, to move within 12 at 29 under. Torque had the best team round of all, a 12-under effort led by Ancer's 65 and Niemann's 68, and climbed to fourth at 19 under. Southern Guards GC is fifth at 15 under.

Sunday Stakes

The forecast for the final round calls for gusts up to 34 mph, which would make Saturday's conditions look gentle. Herbert has the lead, the scrambling touch and a team lead of nine shots as a safety net for Ripper. DeChambeau and Hatton have the firepower to make it a real final day. In this kind of wind, a three-shot lead can disappear in three holes, or turn into a fortress.
