North Dakota State Beats UTEP 31-7 With 31 Straight Points and a Smothering Defense
After Raymond Moore III's 57-yard touchdown run, the Bison held the Miners under 10 first downs and scored the final 31 points in the Fargodome.

For a few minutes on Saturday afternoon, UTEP looked like it might spoil North Dakota State's day in the Fargodome. Raymond Moore III took the Miners' first snap of a drive 57 yards for a touchdown, and the visitors led 7-0 early in the first quarter. That was the last time UTEP scored. North Dakota State answered with 31 straight points, choked the life out of the UTEP offense and pulled away for a 31-7 Mountain West win.
The Bison improved to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in league play in their first season as an FBS program and the Mountain West's newest football member. UTEP, in its own first year in the conference after leaving Conference USA, fell to 1-7 and 0-4. It was the first meeting between the schools, and for most of the afternoon it played like one team was still learning the neighborhood and the other had already bought a house.
A Fast Start, Then Nothing
Moore's run was the kind of play UTEP needed more of and never found again. That single carry accounted for roughly a quarter of the Miners' total offense for the afternoon, and they finished with fewer than 10 first downs.
North Dakota State did not panic after the early punch. The Bison spent the rest of the first quarter and the start of the second on a 16-play, 83-yard drive that ate 8:10 of clock and ended with a 30-yard Drew Klein field goal. It was not flashy, but it set the tone. NDSU would keep the ball for 36:44 of the game's 60 minutes.
Late in the second quarter, the Bison took the lead for good. A five-play, 45-yard drive finished with DJ Scott diving in from a yard out with 3:47 left in the half, and NDSU went to the break up 10-7.
Turning Point: The Third-Quarter March
The game stayed tight longer than the final score suggests. UTEP's defense, led by safety Esteban Guillory, kept the Bison out of the end zone for most of the third quarter. But late in the period, North Dakota State put together its cleanest drive of the day, a 10-play, 80-yard march that took 5:42 off the clock.
Quarterback Nathan Hayes capped it with a 3-yard touchdown pass to tight end Reis Kessel with 1:16 left in the third. That made it 17-7, and given how little UTEP's offense was doing, a 10-point lead felt like 30. The Miners never got close enough to threaten again.
That drive is the one that mattered. Before it, UTEP was one big play from tying the game. After it, the Miners needed two scores against a defense that was not giving up one.
Pulling Away Late
The fourth quarter was all Bison. North Dakota State went 62 yards in six plays on its next scoring drive, and Hayes finished it himself with a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:45 left, stretching the lead to 24-7.
Then came the exclamation point. On UTEP's next possession, Moore hit Jaden Smith for a 12-yard gain, but Smith was stripped by A. Elliott and NDSU's Marion Moore scooped the loose ball and returned it for a touchdown with 1:06 remaining. The play survived an automatic replay review, and the rout was official.
By the Numbers
Hayes completed 22 of 32 passes for 240 yards with a touchdown and an interception, and he added 21 yards and a score on the ground. Jackson Williams was his favorite target all afternoon, catching 10 passes for 111 yards, including a long gain of 48. Kessel added six catches for 85 yards and the touchdown, and Chris Kiel had a 24-yard reception.
On the ground, NDSU ran it 37 times for 141 yards. Scott led the way with 50 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, and Barry Kpeenu added 41 yards on 11 attempts. The Bison were 3 for 3 on fourth down, which kept several drives alive and helped them build that massive possession edge.
Defensively, linebacker Donovan Woolen was everywhere, finishing with 11 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Defensive end Kelton McCaslin also recorded a sack. NDSU forced three turnovers: two interceptions of UTEP quarterback EJ Colson Jr. and the fumble that Marion Moore took the other way.
Colson completed 11 of 16 passes for just 59 yards, and the two interceptions hurt. UTEP's passing game finished with fewer than 100 yards. The Miners averaged about five yards per carry on the ground, but outside of Moore's long touchdown, the running game rarely got going. Smith led UTEP with six catches for 41 yards.
Guillory led UTEP with 12 tackles, linebacker Kode Lowe added 10, and Justin Content had nine stops with two tackles for loss. Kaleb Miles intercepted Hayes for UTEP's lone takeaway. Punter Brady Braun was busy, booting six times for a 39.2-yard average.
The Miners also hurt themselves with seven penalties for 60 yards, compared to four for 40 by North Dakota State. NDSU piled up 19 first downs and 381 total yards, more than doubling UTEP in first downs.
Those numbers tell the story of how this game was actually won. North Dakota State never needed a huge play. Its longest run of the day went for 13 yards. Instead, the Bison kept stacking manageable gains, leaned on Williams and Kessel to move the sticks through the air, and trusted the defense to get the ball back. UTEP, meanwhile, converted just 5 of 13 third downs and never attempted a fourth-down conversion, a sign of how rarely the Miners found themselves in reachable situations. When an offense spends the afternoon in third and long, punting becomes a habit, and Braun's six punts made that plain. NDSU's offense was patient, and its defense made patience pay.
What It Means
For North Dakota State, this was a needed bounce-back after a 21-16 loss at New Mexico a week ago, a game decided by a pick-six. The Bison did not have to sweat this one. The defense held UTEP scoreless for the final 57 minutes or so, and the offense did enough to keep the chains and the clock moving.
The bigger picture is interesting. North Dakota State already owns a 38-32 win at Air Force from September, and at 4-2 in Mountain West play, the Bison remain part of a crowded group chasing New Mexico and Wyoming near the top of the standings. For a program in its first FBS season, sitting at 7-2 heading into November is a strong statement, even if the conference title race may be a long shot.
For UTEP, the first Mountain West season keeps getting harder. The Miners have one win, no conference wins, and an offense that has struggled to generate much without a big individual play. Moore's 57-yard run showed there is some explosiveness on the roster, but UTEP has to find a way to string drives together. Single-digit first downs will not beat many teams in any league.
The Takeaway
North Dakota State did not need anything spectacular. The Bison absorbed an early hit, settled in, and controlled the game with long drives, good third and fourth down execution, and a defense that made UTEP's offense look stuck in place. The 31-7 final reflects a team comfortable winning in a grinding style, and that is a useful identity to carry into the last month of the regular season. UTEP, meanwhile, will head back to El Paso still searching for the formula that turns flashes into points.
