Rams vs. Chargers Week 8: Blake Corum and Puka Nacua Bury the Winless Bolts 24-9 After a Brutal Start
Blake Corum ran for 73 yards and a touchdown, Puka Nacua caught 11 passes and the Rams shook off five drives without a first down to beat the Chargers 24-9 and drop them to 0-7.

For roughly 28 minutes on Sunday, the Los Angeles Rams looked like the team in the building with zero wins. Five drives, zero first downs, zero third-down conversions and 24 yards on their first 15 snaps. Per the AP, Sean McVay had never seen one of his offenses go five possessions without a first down. Then Tutu Atwell got behind the defense, and the rest of the afternoon belonged to the home side.
The Rams beat the Los Angeles Chargers 24-9 at SoFi Stadium, scoring 21 straight points after trailing 9-3 late in the first half. Blake Corum ran for 73 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, Kyren Williams added a short scoring run, and Puka Nacua caught 11 passes for 80 yards and a score. Two Justin Herbert interceptions bookended the damage. The Rams climb to 4-4 and have won consecutive games for the first time this season. The Chargers fall to 0-7, their worst start since 2000, when Jim Harbaugh was the quarterback absorbing the losses.
Field Goals, Flea-Flickers and Nothing Else
It opened as a turnover swap. Cornerback Tarheeb Still picked off Matthew Stafford early in the first quarter, a throw that came after a false start turned third-and-1 into third-and-6, and the Chargers took over at the Rams' 47. They went backward and punted. A few minutes later, on a third down from the Rams' 43, safety Quentin Lake jumped an out route intended for Quentin Johnston and returned it deep into Chargers territory. Brandon McManus converted from 30 yards for a 3-0 lead.
From there, the Chargers' defense owned the half and the Chargers' offense kept settling. Cameron Dicker hit from 34 yards with four seconds left in the first quarter, from 46 early in the second and from 41 with 1:55 left before halftime. Mike McDaniel, still calling plays despite mounting heat, dialed up two flea-flickers in the second quarter and both worked, per the AP. Each of Dicker's three scoring drives stalled inside the Rams' 30, according to the Chargers' website. A 9-3 lead felt less like control and more like a missed opportunity.
The 40 Yards That Flipped the Building
The Rams' first first down arrived with 1:26 left in the half, and it was a big one: Stafford found Atwell for 40 yards. That throw ignited a five-play, 66-yard drive that ended with Williams walking into the end zone untouched from a yard out with 19 seconds remaining. Just like that, it was 10-9.
The Chargers nearly stole it back. With no timeouts and 19 seconds to work with from their own 40, Herbert hit a short pass, spiked the ball and launched one toward the goal line. It ricocheted around a crowd and popped into Ladd McConkey's hands at the 1, three feet short, and the half was over. "Justin made a crazy play and launched it and gave us a chance," McConkey said, per the Chargers' website. "It was a cool play, but sucks we didn't come away with anything."
Harbaugh later said his team "lost in the middle eight," pointing to the Rams' touchdown before the break and their opening drive of the third quarter. He was right about where this one got away.
Corum Takes the Wheel
The Rams came out of the locker room and handed the ball to Corum on four straight plays. He finished the drive himself, slicing through the Chargers for a 23-yard touchdown at the 10:42 mark of the third quarter to make it 17-9. That was the turning point, and the ground game explains why: the Rams had 10 rushing yards at halftime and piled up 129 more after it, per Pro Football Talk.
Then Herbert's afternoon took its second ugly turn. Late in the third quarter, Trent McDuffie, back from a groin injury, stepped in front of a throw meant for tight end Charlie Kolar and brought it back 26 yards to the Chargers' 22. The Rams cashed it in quickly. Stafford flipped a screen to Nacua, who turned it into an 18-yard catch-and-run touchdown with 3:41 left in the third. It was 24-9, and the scoring was done.
The Chargers' last real threat came with under seven minutes to play, when they reached the Rams' 24. Herbert's fourth-down throw to tight end Oronde Gadsden II came up short of the line to gain, and the Rams rode out a scoreless fourth quarter.
Nacua's Steady Hands and a Secondary That Paid a Price
Nacua was targeted 12 times and caught 11, the kind of reliable volume that keeps an offense breathing when nothing else works. Stafford, a week after setting the franchise record for touchdown passes in Las Vegas, finished 17 of 25 for 157 yards with the touchdown and an interception. It was a quiet line for the NFL's leading passer entering the day, but the Atwell strike changed the game. Corum was the most explosive back on the field at 6.6 yards per carry, while Williams handled the grind with 56 yards on 16 carries.
The defense earned the game ball. Lake's pick produced the first points, McDuffie's produced the last, and the Chargers never reached the end zone. McDuffie led the team with nine tackles before a back injury late in the third quarter kept him on the sideline. Cornerback Jaylen Watson left early in the second half with a shoulder injury and did not return.
For the Chargers, Herbert completed 24 of 32 passes for 257 yards, and McConkey caught four balls for 86 yards. The Chargers outgained the Rams 295 to 281 and held the ball for 32:24. The yards were there. The points were not. "I've got to be smarter with the ball," Herbert said, per the Chargers' website. "It's just bad decisions, poor mistakes by me and something that I have to clean up."
The Numbers Behind It
- 0 first downs on the Rams' first five drives, a first in McVay's coaching career, per the AP.
- 21 unanswered points for the Rams after they fell behind 9-3.
- 10 interceptions for Herbert this season, most in the league, with at least one in all seven games.
- 3 points from four Chargers drives that began with a short field, per the team's website.
- 9 straight quarters without a Chargers touchdown.
- 11 catches on 12 targets for Nacua.
Where Both Teams Go From Here
The Rams are back to .500 after a 3-4 start, and they got there with a patched-up roster. Davante Adams was out injured. Long snapper Joe Cardona was inactive with an ankle injury, so Jake McQuaide handled snaps, and Joshua Karty, elevated from the practice squad, took kickoffs while McManus handled the field goals. The status of McDuffie and Watson is the immediate worry. Our preview expected Nacua and the two-back rotation to carry the day, and they did, even if our 26-17 pick gave both offenses too much credit. The Rams visit Washington on Nov. 8.
The Chargers are the league's only winless team and have lost 10 straight dating to last season, per the Los Angeles Times. Linebacker Daiyan Henley hurt his shoulder in the first quarter but returned, and safety Derwin James Jr. was placed on injured reserve Saturday. Harbaugh, who has stood by McDaniel as the play-caller, would not entertain the idea of a team checking out. "There's no quit. There's no surrender," Harbaugh said, per the Chargers' website. The Chargers host Houston on Nov. 8.
Same Building, Different Directions
These franchises share a stadium and a city, and for one afternoon the scoreboard told two very different stories. One team spent 28 minutes fumbling for the light switch and then found it. The other kicked three field goals, came within a yard on a Hail Mary and is still hunting for its first win with November underway. Offensive tackle Joe Alt summed up the problem in one sentence. "We've got to score points, and it can't just be field goals," Alt said.
