DeSean Bishop, No. 16 Tennessee Force Three Turnovers and Hold No. 8 Kentucky Without a Touchdown in 34-6 Rout
DeSean Bishop ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns, and No. 16 Tennessee forced three turnovers and held No. 8 Kentucky without a touchdown in a 34-6 win at Neyland Stadium.

Tennessee forced three turnovers, stopped Kentucky twice on fourth down and kept the SEC leaders out of the end zone all night, then pulled away with 21 points in the fourth quarter. DeSean Bishop ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns, and No. 16 Tennessee beat No. 8 Kentucky 34-6 on Saturday night at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville.
Tennessee (7-2, 4-2 SEC) led the whole way after Daune Morris broke a 66-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter. Kentucky (7-2, 5-2 SEC) moved the ball for long stretches, ran more plays and held the ball for 35:17, but its six-game winning streak ended with two field goals and no touchdowns, the first time the Wildcats were held out of the end zone this season.
The Volunteers won the series for the sixth straight year in front of 101,915 fans at a homecoming game played under the program's Dark Mode theme.
Morris breaks it open
The first quarter was scoreless for more than 14 minutes, and Kentucky was the first team to threaten. The Wildcats drove to the Tennessee 39, helped by a 14-yard completion from Kenny Minchey to tight end Willie Rodriguez on third and 9, but on second and 8 Minchey threw deep and safety Dejuan Lane intercepted the pass in the end zone at 6:40. Minchey had thrown one interception all season entering the night.
Tennessee made the next big play. After a holding penalty backed Kentucky up inside its own 20, Wilson Berry punted 46 yards to the Tennessee 34. On the first snap of the drive, Morris ran up the middle and went 66 yards for a touchdown at 0:56. Cooper Ranvier's extra point made it 7-0.
Field goals instead of touchdowns
Kentucky answered with an 11-play, 50-yard drive. Linebacker Arion Carter sacked Minchey for a 7-yard loss early in the possession, but a Tennessee holding penalty wiped out a second sack and gave the Wildcats a first down. Jovantae Barnes then ran for 14 yards and added a 19-yard run on third and 5 to reach the Tennessee 21. The drive stalled there. Barnes lost 5 yards on second down, an illegal formation penalty pushed Kentucky back on fourth down, and Adam Zouagui made a 43-yard field goal at 9:53 of the second quarter.
Tennessee needed six plays to get the points back. George MacIntyre threw deep to Radarious Jackson for 36 yards to the Kentucky 36, and when Bishop was stopped for a 1-yard loss on third and 3, Ranvier made a 48-yard field goal at 7:16 for a 10-3 lead.
The next Kentucky drive lasted three plays. Qua Moss forced a fumble from Barnes, and Kayin Lee recovered for Tennessee. The Volunteers could not take advantage, going 2 yards in three plays around an offensive pass interference penalty and a delay of game, and Jackson Ross pinned Kentucky at its own 4 with a 42-yard punt.
Kentucky then put together its best drive of the half. The Wildcats went 89 yards in 12 plays, with Minchey finding freshman Kenny Darby for 33 yards and again for 15, and CJ Baxter converting a third and 1. Kentucky had first and goal at the Tennessee 6 with under 20 seconds left, but Baxter lost a yard and two passes to Rodriguez fell incomplete. Zouagui kicked a 25-yard field goal with nine seconds left, and Tennessee led 10-6 at halftime.
Moss changes the third quarter
Tennessee opened the second half with a 10-play, 55-yard drive. Quarterback Faizon Brandon came in for a third and 2 and ran 29 yards down the left sideline to the Kentucky 23. Two incompletions from the 20 followed, and Ranvier made a 39-yard field goal at 10:44 for a 13-6 lead.
The defenses traded stops until late in the quarter. Kentucky started at its own 18 with 3:55 left, and Minchey ran for 12 and 7 yards to help move the Wildcats to midfield. On third and 8 with 30 seconds left in the quarter, Moss sacked Minchey and knocked the ball loose. Mariyon Dye recovered and returned it 11 yards to the Kentucky 36. It was the second forced fumble of the night for Moss.
Twenty-one in the fourth
Tennessee turned that takeaway into the game's first touchdown since Morris's run. Bishop carried three straight times for 17 yards, including a 5-yard run on third and 3, to the Kentucky 24. Then Brandon, back in at quarterback, flipped a shovel pass to Mike Matthews, who ran 24 yards for a touchdown at 13:34. Tennessee led 20-6.
Kentucky's next drive reached midfield and stopped there. Facing fourth and 1 at the 50, Minchey dropped back and Carter sacked the quarterback for an 11-yard loss and a turnover on downs. On the next snap, MacIntyre threw deep to Braylon Staley for 34 yards to the Kentucky 5, and Bishop scored on the following play at 9:45 for a 27-6 lead.
The Wildcats made one more push. Minchey hit Rodriguez for 38 yards to the Tennessee 26, but a holding penalty moved Kentucky back, and on fourth and 6 from the 22 Minchey was flagged for intentional grounding, another turnover on downs at 6:28.
Tennessee then ran out most of the clock. The Volunteers went 65 yards in 10 plays, all on the ground, and used more than five minutes. Bishop converted a fourth and 1 from the Tennessee 44 with a 9-yard run, broke a 19-yard run on the next snap and finished the drive with a 5-yard touchdown at 1:06.
Bishop reaches 1,000 again
Bishop carried 25 times for 109 yards and both fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns. Bishop now has 1,048 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns this season and, according to Tennessee, is the second Volunteer with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, joining Johnnie Jones in 1983 and 1984. Morris added 85 yards on five carries, and Tennessee averaged 6.5 yards per rush.
MacIntyre completed 9 of 14 passes for 125 yards without a touchdown or an interception, but two of those completions, the 36-yarder to Jackson and the 34-yarder to Staley, set up 10 points. Staley caught four passes for 50 yards, and Matthews had three catches for 38 yards and the touchdown.
Carter led the Tennessee defense with 13 tackles, two sacks and four tackles for loss. Jeremiah Telander made 10 tackles, and Moss and Edwin Spillman had nine each. Ranvier made both field goals and all four extra points.
By the numbers
Kentucky had 20 first downs to Tennessee's 14 and went 6 of 14 on third down, but finished 0 for 2 on fourth down and turned it over three times. Tennessee committed no turnovers. The Volunteers outgained Kentucky 389 to 361, with 240 of their yards on the ground, despite having the ball for 24:43. Kentucky was penalized seven times for 50 yards, and Tennessee six times for 60.
Minchey completed 26 of 34 passes for 224 yards with the interception and was sacked four times. Darby caught seven passes for 69 yards, Rodriguez had six catches for a team-high 81 yards, and Baxter led the Wildcats with 54 rushing yards on 11 carries. Barnes added 48 yards on seven carries. Ty Bryant led Kentucky with nine tackles, and Mi'Quise Humphrey-Grace had the Wildcats' only sack. Zouagui made both field goal attempts.
"You can't turn the ball over three times, that's obvious," Kentucky coach Will Stein said in postgame quotes released by Kentucky Athletics. Asked about Minchey, Stein returned to the same point: "We had three turnovers, that's the story of the game, the turnovers."
What it means
Kentucky came to Knoxville in sole possession of first place in the SEC after a 34-17 comeback win over Vanderbilt on Oct. 24. The Wildcats now have two conference losses with three regular-season games left. Kentucky hosts Florida at Kroger Field on Nov. 14, then plays at Missouri on Nov. 21 and closes the regular season against Louisville on Nov. 28.
For Tennessee, the win was a strong response to a 27-24 loss at South Carolina on a walk-off field goal two weeks ago. It was also Tennessee's third straight home win, following a 26-10 win over Alabama on Oct. 17. Coach Josh Heupel's team plays at Texas A&M on Nov. 14, hosts LSU on Nov. 21 and finishes at Vanderbilt on Nov. 28.
