In a surprising turn of events, Texas A&M is reportedly poised to terminate the contract of football coach Jimbo Fisher this Sunday, as confirmed by sources close to ESPN. The wheels for Fisher’s departure were set in motion during a Texas A&M Board of Regents meeting on Thursday, where a four-hour deliberation on Fisher’s future ultimately paved the way for an imminent decision.
Sources indicate that Fisher will be due an eye-watering $76 million upon his dismissal, marking a historic buyout amount for a head coach. This staggering figure is more than double the previously known buyout paid to any fired college head coach. Despite the financial implications, Texas A&M reportedly plans to honor Fisher’s contract in full, as initially reported by TexAgs.
The decision comes on the heels of Texas A&M’s recent 51-10 victory over Mississippi State, bringing their current season record to 6-4 with a 4-3 standing in the SEC. Fisher, who has been at the helm for six seasons, boasting a 45-25 record, had only recently inked a new 10-year contract in 2021, guaranteeing him a hefty $95 million.
The extension was granted, in part, due to the perceived risk of Fisher potentially leaving for LSU. However, since the team’s Orange Bowl triumph and No. 4 finish in the Associated Press poll in 2020, Texas A&M’s performance has been less than stellar, with a 19-15 record. Notably, the Aggies have failed to clinch the SEC West title or secure a spot in the College Football Playoff during Fisher’s tenure.
Fisher, who arrived at Texas A&M in 2018 from Florida State, where he secured a national title in 2013, faces the conclusion of the season with matchups against Abilene Christian and LSU. As the football world awaits official confirmation, the impending departure of Jimbo Fisher has sent shockwaves through the college football community, marking an unprecedented move in the realm of coaching changes.
