The Columbus Blue Jackets Fire Head Coach Dean Evason, Rick Bowness Named Head Coach

At 19-19-7 and tied for last in the Eastern Conference, the Columbus Blue Jackets made a bold mid-season move by firing head coach Dean Evason and immediately naming veteran Rick Bowness as his replacement. The organization is betting the coaching change can spark enough momentum to salvage their playoff ambitions.

At 19-19-7 the Columbus Blue Jackets relieved Dean Evason and assistant coach Steve McCarthy of their duties. President of Hockey Operations and GM, Don Waddell, announced Monday afternoon. Waddell wasted no time naming a new head coach, Rick Bowness.

Dean Evason lasted just one and a half years as Blue Jackets head coach. He took over last season in the wake of the Johnny Gaudreau tragedy and did an admirable job, given the circumstances, nearly leading Columbus to a playoff spot.

Before the season GM, players, and coaches all set the bar at the playoffs this season. That simply was not materializing on the ice. “This season has been a frustrating one for all of us, and the bottom line is we are not performing at the level that meets our expectations. We all share in that responsibility, me included, and while this was not a decision that was made lightly, it was one that needed to be made at this time.” Don Waddell said.

The timing seems a bit odd. But it is safe to say the organization felt now was the time to try and gain some momentum while there is still time to save the season. Also, it should be noted that Evason was not the Blue Jackets first choice as head coach. It was now Detroit Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan.

Columbus is currently tied with the Ottawa Senators for last place in the Eastern Conference, seven points out of a playoff spot, and eight teams to climb over to get there. The Blue Jackets offense has taken a tumble after being top 10 a season ago and is now 22nd. The defense has not been consistent, leading to the change.

Rick Bowness has enjoyed success in the NHL. 2022-24 Bowness led the Winnipeg Jets to a 98-57-9 record and back-to-back Stanley Cup Playoff berths.
