While many experts predicted a sixth or seventh place finish, the Blue Jackets find themselves in a favorable position to address key areas of need, particularly on defense.
The Columbus Blue Jackets have never been selected number one in the draft lottery. This year is no different, but it is not as bad as it could have been. Many NHL experts had Columbus drafting sixth or seventh so fourth is not bad at all, perhaps a break from the hockey gods. With a high-end prospect pool and still needing a GM, who could the Blue Jackets target? The only thing to do is poke around and see what the biggest need is.
For starters, one has to ask if the Blue Jackets are too small at forward. The Blue Jackets have a fair number of forwards that are six-foot and smaller and under 190 LBS. Some size would be nice for the matchup’s sake. It would seem that there are bigger needs than forwards with size for now.
Zach Werenski and Erik Gudbranson were the best defensive players for the Blue Jackets and while the team played better in front of Columbus goalies, the defense was a bit of a mess. Adam Boqvist once again could not stay healthy, Jake Bean was streaky, and David Jiricek was not ready (and probably will be this season) Denton Mateychuk had a good training camp and should be in the running for a roster spot this season.
A good GM builds his team from the net out so I will put on my best armchair GM hat and say that is where Columbus will be focused at number four. Anton Silayev, LHD, could be a nice addition. At 6-foot-7 Silayev is rangey and already knows how to use his big frame to his advantage, he has physical skill and offensive skills. Michigan State defenseman, Artyom Levshunov would also be a good addition as he is very good at both ends of the ice.
Again without a GM, it is anyone’s guess where the Blue Jackets go with the draft pick. The safe bet is defense. Add one of the top prospects and add them to Jiricek and Mateychuk and suddenly the Columbus blueline looks to be in better shape.
