World Wide Technology Championship Round 1: Chris Kirk Goes Bogey-Free for 63 and the Lead

Chris Kirk opened the 2026 World Wide Technology Championship with a bogey-free 63 at El Cardonal, one clear of Nick Dunlap and Zac Blair.

Chris Kirk has a habit of making leaderboards look easy on Thursday. Turning that into a trophy has been the hard part. In the opening round of the World Wide Technology Championship, the veteran peppered the flagsticks at El Cardonal at Diamante, signed for a bogey-free 9-under 63 and walked off with a one-shot lead over Nick Dunlap and Zac Blair.

Kirk hit fairway after fairway on Tiger Woods' wide-open layout, missed only one green, and per the AP had a birdie putt on every hole except the par-3 2nd, where he blocked his tee shot right, pitched to 10 feet and saved par. Asked to describe it, he sounded almost apologetic. "I'm sorry I'm not going to have a very exciting answer for you, but yeah, it was just a really steady day," Kirk said, per the AP.

The Putt That Broke the Script

Steady, sure. But the moment of the day was pure chaos. On the 156-yard 16th, Kirk caught his tee shot heavy and yanked it, a swing he labeled a "little bit of a chunk pull." From roughly 70 feet, over a ridge, he rolled the birdie putt in.

The 63 matched Kirk's best round of the season and sits one shot off his PGA TOUR career low of 62. It also comes with an asterisk he knows all too well. This is the ninth time Kirk has led or co-led after 18 holes on TOUR, and he has not converted any of the previous eight. He has six TOUR wins, the latest at The Sentry in 2024, so the closing gene is in there.

Bubble Math in Paradise

The backdrop explains the business-like tone. Kirk arrived in Los Cabos at No. 110 in the FedExCup Fall standings, on the wrong side of the top 100 line that protects full status for 2027. The AP noted he has three tournaments left to fix that, and Kirk refused to stare at the math.

"Just go day by day, shot by shot. I know how cliche that sounds," Kirk said, per the AP, adding that he cannot control where he finishes on a points list, only how he approaches each shot. He had been trending, too, with two top-10s in his previous three starts.

The bubble crowd around him had a mixed afternoon. Taylor Pendrith, sitting No. 102, opened with a 68. Tony Finau (No. 109) and Lucas Glover (No. 111) each posted 70. Mackenzie Hughes (No. 101) shot even-par 72 and A.J. Ewart (No. 104) a 73. On a day when more than half the 120-man field broke 70, anything over par felt like a step backward.

Blair's Late Charge, Dunlap's Encore

Zac Blair came into the week at No. 121 and needs a big week more than almost anyone near the top. He delivered a bogey-free 64, and the finish was the story: birdies at 14, 15, 17 and 18 dragged him from the chase pack to within one of the lead.

Nick Dunlap matched that 64, and the venue clearly suits him. A year ago he opened here with a bogey-free 61 to share the first-round lead with Sami Valimaki. His 2026 season has been far bumpier, with 10 made cuts in 22 starts and a No. 165 standing, though his exemption runs through 2027, so his stakes are about form rather than status. Athlon reported that a switch to a longer, softer driver shaft has helped Dunlap hit a higher fade, and El Cardonal rewarded it.

Kids, Contenders and a Hot Putter

The group at 7 under, two back, is a strange and fun mix: Matthieu Pavon, Harry Hall, Taylor Montgomery, Kensei Hirata and Ben James, all with 65s.

Montgomery's round was a clinic on the greens. He hit all 14 fairways and led the field in strokes gained: putting at nearly five strokes, a hot flatstick that turned a good ball-striking day into a great one. James, meanwhile, is playing with house money. As the No. 1 player in the PGA TOUR University ranking, his card for next season is already in hand, and a 65 in Mexico only adds to the buzz.

One more shot back at 6 under, 19-year-old Blades Brown signed for a 66, and so did Ryan Gerard, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 23 in the world. Per the AP, Gerard was eligible for the DP World Tour's postseason event in Abu Dhabi and chose Los Cabos instead.

The Defending Champ Has Work to Do

Ben Griffin owns this tournament's record book. Last November he ran away with the title at 29 under, a 72-hole total of 259, and he is trying to become the first player to defend this title since Viktor Hovland did it in 2020 and 2021. His opener was a 2-under 70, seven back of Kirk and tied for 70th. Sami Valimaki, Dunlap's co-leader from a year ago, posted 69.

Not everyone finished. Darkness halted play at 5:48 p.m. local time with four players still on the course: amateur Jay Leng, Jesper Svensson, Trace Crowe and John VanDerLaan. Leng was 5 under through 17. They return Friday morning to wrap up before the second round rolls on.

Friday's Fork in the Road

On a course this gettable, a one-shot lead is a rumor, not a cushion. More than two dozen players finished within four shots of Kirk, and the cut will come with a big, bunched group fighting for weekend tee times. For Kirk, the job is obvious and difficult at once: keep stacking steady days, and finally make one of these Thursday leads mean something. The full first-round breakdown is in the PGA TOUR's Round 1 recap (opens in a new tab).
