Bank of Utah Championship Round 2: Sponsor Invite Michael Brennan Grabs a Share of the Lead

Michael Brennan, a 23-year-old sponsor invite making a third PGA TOUR start, shot 65 to reach 10 under and share the 36-hole lead with David Ford at the Bank of Utah Championship.

Three PGA TOUR starts. One as a professional. Thirty-six holes at Black Desert, and Michael Brennan's name is sitting on top of the board.

The 23-year-old sponsor invite shot a 6-under 65 on Friday to reach 10-under 132 and post the clubhouse lead at the Bank of Utah Championship. For the second straight day, darkness stopped play before the round was done, and when the stragglers finished on Saturday morning, 23-year-old David Ford had climbed up to join Brennan in a tie for the 36-hole lead at 10 under.

The Kid From the Americas

Brennan did not sneak into this field by accident. The former Wake Forest standout won three times in a four-event stretch on PGA TOUR Americas in August and September, at Windsor, Ontario, Brainerd, Minnesota and Sherwood Park, Alberta, and topped that tour's season points list. That earned the first of 10 Korn Ferry Tour cards on offer. It also earned a sponsor exemption into this week.

Friday's round had one swing that changed everything. On the par-5 ninth, Brennan rolled in a 40-foot eagle putt. Add five birdies against a single bogey, and the 65 put a player making a first PGA TOUR start as a pro in front of the entire field.

"I'm just very grateful to be here," Brennan said, per the AP.

Brennan pointed to steady driving as the foundation, saying the ball was finding the fairway a lot. On a course with water and lava rock framing the holes, that matters.

McCarty's 28

The defending champion had the most electric stretch of the day. Matt McCarty, who won the inaugural edition of this event a year ago, started on the back nine and went out in 7-under 28 without a bogey. Birdies at 10 and 11, four in a row from 13 through 16, and another at 18 made a repeat look very possible.

The second nine was quieter. McCarty played it in 1-over 37 for a 65 and sits 8 under. McCarty described the opening nine as feeling really easy, adding that golf does not always feel that way. Entering the week 84th in the FedExCup, McCarty has a second Black Desert title in sight.

Three at 9 Under

One shot behind Brennan's clubhouse number at the end of Friday sat three players who all need this week. Pierceson Coody fired 64, and Jackson Suber and Justin Lower each shot 67 to reach 9 under. Suber's finish was the best of the trio, with birdies on five of the final six holes. All three are outside the top 100 in the FedExCup Fall, with Suber at No. 127, Lower at No. 129 and Coody at No. 133, per the PGA TOUR. With only three events left after this one, a big weekend could change all three seasons.

Japan's Takumi Kanaya (68) joined McCarty at 8 under. First-round co-leader Thorbjorn Olesen shot 70 to sit at 7 under, still in a strong spot for a player who entered the week at No. 116.

Ford's Saturday Morning Swing

Ford, 23, was 8 under with six holes left when the horn blew Friday evening. The finish on Saturday morning was a ride. Ford bogeyed the 12th, then faced the 519-yard 13th, the toughest hole on the course all week, with the round just restarted. A 292-yard drive found the fairway, but the second shot came up short and a three-putt made double bogey. That dropped Ford four shots behind Brennan.

Then came the response. Ford birdied four of the final five holes to post 10 under and catch the clubhouse leader. Ford was the No. 1 player in the 2025 PGA TOUR University Ranking and missed the cut in the first five TOUR starts before breaking through at the 3M Open in July. Now Ford and Brennan, two 23-year-olds, share the 36-hole lead.

Names on Both Sides of the Line

Sahith Theegala added a 67 to sit 7 under, and Max Homa bounced back from Thursday's water ball with a 66 to reach 6 under. Billy Horschel matched that 66 to get back to 4 under after the quadruple bogey that stung the first round. Alex Noren went the other way, shooting 74 to fall back to 1 under, right around the projected cut line when play stopped Friday. Jason Day posted 72.

Ogden's Connor Howe gave the home state something to cheer about at 7 under through 36 holes, according to Cedar City News.

Saturday Will Be Long

With the second round wrapping up Saturday morning and the third round starting right after, the leaders face a long day in the desert. Brennan and Ford are playing on house money in a sense, a sponsor invite and a PGA TOUR University graduate who arrived with little fanfare. But the chasers are packed in, the defending champion has already shown a 28 is possible here, and only one round separates this field from Sunday.
