Bank of Utah Championship Round 3: Austin Smotherman Holds Off Doug Ghim's Back-Nine 29 to Keep a One-Shot Lead
Austin Smotherman birdied the 18th for a 65 and a one-shot lead at 23 under over Doug Ghim, who came home in 29, as Kevin Streelman's triple bogey at 13 turned the Bank of Utah Championship into a two-man race.

One golfer has played 99 PGA TOUR events without winning. The other has played 191. On Sunday at Black Desert Resort, they will walk to the first tee together, one shot apart, and one of those numbers is about to stop meaning anything.
Austin Smotherman birdied the 18th for a 6-under 65 on Saturday and leads the Bank of Utah Championship at 23-under 190. Doug Ghim came home in 29 for a 64 and sits one back at 22 under. Then there is a canyon: Kevin Streelman (68), Trace Crowe (64) and Ben James (64) are tied for third at 18 under, five shots off the pace.
Three-Putt, Then Takeoff
Smotherman did not have a clean Saturday. He bogeyed the par-3 third, per Field Level Media, then answered with birdies at the fifth, seventh and ninth to turn in 2 under. A three-putt bogey on the 10th, per the AP, gave the field an opening.
Nobody got through it. Smotherman birdied three of the next four holes and added two more at the 17th and 18th for a back-nine 31. That closing birdie on the 18th was the difference between a share of the lead and owning it outright heading into Sunday.
"I think it's good pressure," Smotherman said, per the AP and Field Level Media. "That's what we work for. That's the spot you want to be."
He also told Field Level Media that the attention mostly encourages him to stay in his own bubble. With a one-shot cushion and a playing partner who just shot 29 on the back nine, the bubble is going to get tested.
Ghim's 29
If Smotherman's round was a recovery, Ghim's was a sprint. Ghim turned in 35 after a bogey on the par-5 ninth, the first bogey of the week for Ghim, then caught fire. Birdies at the 10th, 12th, 14th, 16th, 17th and 18th added up to a back-nine 29, per Field Level Media, and the longest of them was a 35-footer at the par-4 12th.
"My first bogey of the week, but it didn't feel like one," Ghim said, per the AP.
Ghim held a share of the lead at points on the back nine, according to the AP, and at 22 under is the only player within shouting distance. Ghim is 30 and making a 192nd career start. On what a first win would mean, Ghim kept it short, per the AP: "It would be a dream come true."
The Four-Shot Swing at 13
For a long stretch of the afternoon, this was a three-man fight. Streelman, the only player in the top five who has won on TOUR according to the AP, was tied with Smotherman when play reached the 13th.
Then the hole flipped everything. Streelman drove into the water, reloaded, found a bunker with the approach and could not get up and down. Triple bogey. Smotherman birdied the same hole. Four shots changed hands on one hole, and Streelman eventually signed for a 68, five back.
It stings more because of what is riding on it. Streelman is trying to regain a card after a major medical exemption expired, and a big week here is the fastest route back to status. A tie for third still helps, but the trophy now looks a long way off.
Low Rounds Everywhere
Black Desert kept handing out red numbers. Johnny Keefer shot 62, and the AP noted it was the third straight round in which at least one player posted that number. Keefer made it happen despite driving into the lava on the par-5 ninth and pitching out sideways, escaping with a par.
Crowe and James both shot 64 to climb into the tie for third. A.J. Ewart shot 65 and jumped nine spots to become the top Canadian on the board, seven shots back, per the AP. BYU's Kihei Akina, one of three Utah players to make the cut, fired a bogey-free 65 to reach 14 under, according to the Deseret News.
What Sunday Means
The stakes in the FedExCup Fall are not abstract. Smotherman entered the week at No. 79 in the standings and Ghim at No. 89, per Field Level Media, both uncomfortably close to the top-100 line that decides full cards for 2027. Finishing between Nos. 51 and 60 brings spots in the first two Signature Events of next season.
A win changes everything. The AP noted that winners of the eight FedExCup Fall events get a two-year exemption, including a start to 2028 in the Championship Series tier of the TOUR's new model.
The Final Pairing
So here is the setup. Smotherman, 32 and in his 100th start, has slept on the lead twice now and has a 36-hole lead from February at the Cognizant Classic that ended in a tie for second. Ghim has a back-nine 29 fresh in the memory. Nobody else is close enough to matter unless the leaders let them.
One shot. Eighteen holes. Two players chasing a first PGA TOUR title. Sunday at Black Desert is set up as a two-man match, and the 13th hole has already shown how fast that can change.
