Brian Campbell Wins the 2025 Mexico Open After a Lucky Bounce and a Playoff Birdie
Brian Campbell beat Aldrich Potgieter on the second playoff hole at Vidanta Vallarta to win the 2025 Mexico Open at VidantaWorld for a first PGA TOUR title.

Brian Campbell spent a decade grinding for a moment like this, and when it finally came, it came off a tree. On the second playoff hole at Vidanta Vallarta, Campbell's drive was headed for the out-of-bounds stakes, clipped the trees and kicked back into the rough. Three shots later, the 31-year-old was a PGA TOUR winner.
Campbell beat Aldrich Potgieter on the second extra hole to win the Mexico Open at VidantaWorld, holing a birdie putt from just inside 4 feet at the par-5 18th. Both players finished regulation at 20-under 264, Campbell after a 1-under 70 and Potgieter after a 71. Isaiah Salinda shot a bogey-free 65 to finish alone in third at 19 under, one shot out of the playoff. Aaron Rai and Ben Griffin tied for fourth at 18 under, and Stephan Jaeger and Joel Dahmen shared sixth at 17 under.
The Bounce
Start with the shot everyone will remember. After both players parred the first trip back down the 18th, Campbell stepped up on the second playoff hole and hit a low, hard fade that was drifting toward trouble, per the AP. It struck the trees and popped back into the right rough. Golf Digest reported the ball hit bamboo before falling back into play.
"Oh my gosh, that bounce," Campbell said afterward, per Golf Digest. "I mean, I'll take it."
The lie still left Campbell 94 yards behind Potgieter, per the AP, but in play is in play. Campbell advanced a fairway metal to 68 yards, then hit a lob wedge that settled just short of the cup. That set up the winning putt.
Potgieter, meanwhile, had the hole in front of him. His 6-iron approach came up just short and found the front bunker. The blast ran about 6 feet past, and the downhill birdie try slid by on the left. Campbell did not miss.
A Back-and-Forth Sunday
The final round itself never let anyone breathe. Potgieter started with a one-shot lead, and Campbell's day got off to a shaky start when a short par putt slipped by early and dropped Campbell a couple of strokes back, according to CBS Sports. Birdies at the sixth and seventh brought Campbell right back.
Potgieter closed the front nine with back-to-back bogeys, per the AP, and Rai briefly crashed the party. An approach to 20 inches at the par-5 sixth gave the world No. 29 a share of the lead, but Rai played the rest of the round in 1 over and settled for 67.
Campbell grabbed the outright lead with a 12-foot birdie on the par-3 13th, per CBS Sports. Potgieter answered right away with an up-and-down birdie at the par-5 14th to pull level. Each player made one more bogey coming in, and they walked off 72 holes tied.
Salinda Waits in Vain
Salinda did the most with the least fanfare. The TOUR rookie shot a clean 65 to post 19 under in the clubhouse and then had to watch. When Campbell and Potgieter both finished at 20 under, the playoff went on without Salinda, but a solo third is a career-making week for a Korn Ferry Tour graduate.
Dahmen deserves a mention too, with two weekend 65s to climb into a share of sixth. Jaeger, who started Sunday three back, could only manage a 71 and fell into that tie.
Ten Years in the Making
The win was a long time coming. Campbell played college golf at Illinois, was the low amateur at the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay and earned a PGA TOUR card in 2017, according to the AP. That rookie year went sideways: 13 missed cuts in 20 starts, plus a slow-play penalty at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in a strange ruling that also involved partner Miguel Angel Carballo.
What followed was seven years mostly in the minor leagues before a No. 8 finish on the Korn Ferry Tour earned another shot. This was Campbell's 187th PGA TOUR-sanctioned start, per CBS Sports, and the first professional win of any kind.
"To be in this position is just so unreal," Campbell said, per the AP. "I can't believe it, really."
Asked by Golf Channel to sum it up, Campbell had one word: "Grit."
What the Win Buys
The payday was $1.26 million, but the paperwork matters more. Campbell is now exempt on the PGA TOUR through 2027 and is headed to the Masters, THE PLAYERS Championship and the PGA Championship, plus five of the remaining Signature Events in 2025, according to the AP. CBS Sports reported the win vaulted Campbell more than 150 spots to 13th in the FedExCup standings. It also makes the Mexico Open two for two on first-time winners, following Jake Knapp in 2024.
Potgieter's Lesson
For Potgieter, the week was a coming-out party that ended one swing short. The 20-year-old led after 36 and 54 holes, tied the course record with Friday's 61 and led the field in driving distance. Sunday showed the other side of the learning curve.
"Pressure is a big thing," Potgieter said, per the AP. "You just have to learn and adjust to it the next time." And then, the line that should worry the rest of the TOUR: "Hopefully, my time will come soon."
On this Sunday, though, the short hitter with the hot putter, the long résumé and one lucky bounce got the trophy. Campbell earned every bit of the grind that came before it.
