Buccaneers vs. Panthers: Bucky Irving and a Four-Turnover Defense Flatten Carolina 43-13 in Week 7
Bucky Irving ran for two touchdowns, Tampa Bay rushed for 258 yards and the Bucs forced four turnovers in a 43-13 rout of the Panthers in Charlotte.

The Buccaneers got Baker Mayfield back from his thumb injury on Sunday and then handled him like a priceless vase. Tampa Bay ran it 49 times, threw it 11, and the hardest-working person in the building might have been the scoreboard operator.
"With all of these handoffs, I don't know, my thumb might be pretty sore," Mayfield joked after the Bucs flattened the Carolina Panthers 43-13 at Bank of America Stadium on Sunday. The offense was basically a conveyor belt pointed at the end zone: Bucky Irving churned out 106 yards and two scores, the Bucs rolled up 258 on the ground, and the defense and special teams piled up four takeaways that turned a division showdown into a laugher by halftime.
From Opening Drive to Avalanche
The Bucs won the toss, took the ball and set the terms immediately: 14 plays, 70 yards, 7:38 of clock, finished by Irving from 4 yards out. Carolina went nowhere, Tampa punted, and then the wheels came off for the home team. David Moore muffed a punt, Ko Kieft fell on it at the Carolina 18, and Chase McLaughlin banged through a 22-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead.
The second quarter was a full-on horror movie for the Panthers. Al-Quadin Muhammad stripped Bryce Young on a sack, and Calijah Kancey scooped the loose ball and rumbled 32 yards for a touchdown. Carolina finally struck back when Young hit Darren Waller down the middle for a 50-yard score, only for the Bucs to block the extra point and have Zyon McCollum race it all the way back for two points of their own. Per the team, it was the first blocked PAT returned for a two-point score in franchise history. So Carolina's touchdown was worth a grand total of four points. That is not how math is supposed to work on your own field.
Irving punched in a 1-yard score after a 29-yard Kenny Gainwell burst set it up, McCollum picked off Young and returned it 18 yards, and Mayfield, buying time on the run, found Tez Johnson alone in the end zone for a 14-yard score with 4 seconds left in the half. According to the Bucs, it was the 200th regular-season touchdown pass of Mayfield's career. Halftime: 33-6.
The second half was mostly paperwork. Tykee Smith intercepted Young to set up a 44-yard McLaughlin field goal, Carolina's 14-play march died on downs inside the Tampa Bay 10, and Sean Tucker answered with a 46-yard touchdown sprint to cap a 94-yard drive. Anthony Tyus III later scored on a 12-yard run with Kenny Pickett in at quarterback, making the final look respectable on paper only.
The Three-Headed Backfield and a Yaya Diaby Breakout
Irving carried 24 times for 106 yards and two scores, his second 100-yard game of the season per the Bucs, and he didn't even play in the fourth quarter. Gainwell added 88 yards on 14 carries despite briefly leaving with a hip issue, and Tucker averaged 7.4 yards a pop. The team's site said the 258 rushing yards were the fourth-highest single-game total in franchise history.
Up front on defense, Yaya Diaby had the game of his career. He sacked Young three times, his first career three-sack game and the first by a Buccaneer since Devin White in 2020, according to the team.
"It's just that we know this offense so well," Diaby said. "We just got after Bryce and tried to take away his first read and just be aggressive."
Mayfield's line (7 of 11, 64 yards, one touchdown) looks like a typo for a starting quarterback, but it was exactly what the moment required. Per the AP, he is now 7-1 against the Panthers, including 6-1 since joining Tampa Bay.
"He made the plays when we needed them," coach Todd Bowles said. "He didn't need to make many."
Four Points for a Touchdown
If you want the single sequence that broke Carolina, it was the second-quarter stretch that turned a 10-0 game into a 19-6 game. A strip-sack touchdown is a gut punch. Answering it with a 50-yard bomb, then watching your extra point get blocked and returned for two the other way, is the sports equivalent of finding a parking ticket on your car while it is being towed.
Panthers coach Dave Canales did not sugarcoat it. "Just really disappointing," he said. "Turnovers really in every phase."
Young, who entered as the NFL's leader in passing yards per game per the AP, finished 14 of 27 for 163 yards with a touchdown, two interceptions and a lost fumble, and he was sacked five times. He put it on himself.
"I can't turn the ball like that. It hurts the team and that's on me," Young said.
Stats That Matter
- 258 vs. 266: Tampa Bay's rushing yards against Carolina's total yards.
- 20: Points the Bucs scored off turnovers, their most in any game this season per the team.
- 33: First-half points, the third-most in franchise history according to the Bucs.
- 4-0: The turnover margin, including two Carolina fumbles lost.
The NFC South Gets Weird
Strange as it sounds after a 30-point road rout, Tampa Bay is only 2-5. But it is 1-0 in the division, and the Bucs' site points out the Panthers still lead the NFC South at 3-3, with just one more win than Tampa Bay. With five division games still on the Bucs' schedule, the math suddenly looks a lot friendlier than the record.
It also broke a strange spell. According to the AP, the Bucs had played 12 straight one-score games dating to last season. Per the team, this was their largest margin of victory since a 48-14 win over these same Panthers in 2024.
Carolina has bigger worries than one blowout. Right tackle Taylor Moton was carted off in the third quarter with a left ankle and fibula injury, per the AP, and the Panthers have a short week before visiting Green Bay on Thursday night. Tampa Bay hosts Atlanta on Sunday.
On a day the Panthers honored Luke Kuechly with his Hall of Fame ring at halftime, the home team gave its legend very little worth cheering.
Better Late Than Never
The Bucs spent the first six weeks living in one-score purgatory, and every one of those games was decided by eight points or fewer. Asked where a performance like this one had been hiding, Bowles shrugged it off with the energy of a guy who just found twenty bucks in an old jacket.
"I wish I had an answer for that, but it was very welcome," Bowles said.
Welcome, indeed. Now let's see if it sticks around.
