Cognizant Classic Round 3: Shane Lowry Fires a Bogey-Free 63 to Catch Austin Smotherman
Shane Lowry shot a bogey-free 63 to tie Austin Smotherman for the 54-hole lead at 13 under, with Nico Echavarria and Taylor Moore one back at PGA National.

Shane Lowry knows every inch of PGA National, including the parts that have broken hearts before. On Saturday, Lowry turned that knowledge into a charge to the top of the leaderboard.
Lowry shot a bogey-free 8-under 63 to climb into a share of the 54-hole lead at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, tied with Austin Smotherman at 13-under 200. Smotherman, the leader after each of the first two rounds, scrambled to a 69 to hang on. Nico Echavarria (66) and Taylor Moore (67) sit one back at 12 under, and Jimmy Stanger (65) is alone in fifth at 11 under.
Lowry's Front-Nine Blitz
Lowry started the day at 5 under, six off the pace, and ate most of the deficit before the turn. A front-nine 30 did the heavy lifting, followed by a birdie at the 10th. Then came the Bear Trap, where Lowry did not just survive. At the par-3 17th, Lowry hit a 141-yard tee shot to 11 feet and rolled in the birdie, then added another at the 18th to finish the day tied at the top.
It was Lowry's lowest career round at PGA National, and it matched Patton Kizzire for the best score of the day. Lowry said the greens were firm and warned that the course can get away from a player who is not striking it well. There was not much wind, which helped, but a front-nine 30 at PGA National still takes some doing.
"I've had a few chances to win this tournament, and hopefully I can convert it tomorrow," Lowry said, per the AP.
A History That Cuts Both Ways
Those chances are well documented. Lowry finished second here in 2022, when the event was still the Honda Classic, after a storm soaked the final hole and Sepp Straka won by one. Lowry tied for fifth in 2023, held the solo 54-hole lead in 2024 before finishing tied for fourth, and tied for 11th last year. That is a top-five finish in three of the last four years and no trophy.
This is also Lowry's first 54-hole lead since the 2025 Truist Championship. The last PGA TOUR win came at the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans alongside Rory McIlroy. The talent and the course fit are not in question. Closing it out here is the only box left unchecked.
Smotherman Bends but Does Not Break
Smotherman's Saturday was the kind of round that tests whether a first-time contender belongs. The answer, so far, is yes. Smotherman made five birdies and three bogeys, including back-to-back bogeys at the par-4 sixth and the par-3 seventh that opened the door for the chasers. Rather than fade, Smotherman closed with birdies at 17 and 18, the last set up by a 225-yard approach to 16 feet.
The underlying numbers back up the position. Smotherman ranks fifth in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and third in Strokes Gained: Approach for the week, according to the PGA TOUR. The path here ran through two Korn Ferry Tour wins in 2025 to regain TOUR status, and in 81 previous starts Smotherman had never been inside the top five after 54 holes. Off the course, the Smotherman family is expecting a third child in about a month. Sunday will be a big day either way.
The One-Back Crew
Echavarria bounced back. After Friday's 72, the Colombian went back to Thursday form with a bogey-free 66 to reach 12 under. Moore did what Moore has done all week, posting a third straight 67 to sit right alongside Echavarria.
Then there is Stanger, whose 65 included two holed-out eagles in a wild round. Stanger is playing for a first TOUR paycheck since April 2024 after two years of serious elbow trouble.
"It just feels good to be back," Stanger said, per the AP.
Behind that group, Kizzire (63), Keith Mitchell (64) and Beau Hossler (64) all made big jumps and are tied for ninth at 8 under, five shots back.
Beating the Weather, Then Bracing for Sunday
Tee times were moved up on Saturday because of expected bad weather in the West Palm Beach area, and the field got the round in. Lowry and Smotherman will be grouped together on Sunday, a major champion with a long history here alongside a player chasing a first TOUR title.
The math is simple. Two co-leaders, two more one back, a fifth two back, and the Bear Trap waiting at 15, 16 and 17. Lowry has the résumé and the memory of what has gone wrong here. Smotherman has a piece of the lead for a third straight night and nothing to lose. Someone in that group is about to have a career Sunday.
