Corales Puntacana Championship Round 1: Joel Dahmen Rewrites the Course Record
Joel Dahmen went bogey-free with 10 birdies for a course-record 62 and a two-shot lead after the first round of the Corales Puntacana Championship.

Joel Dahmen went to Punta Cana carrying a grudge against his own calendar. He left it on the Corales course on Thursday, along with a new course record.
Dahmen shot a bogey-free 10-under 62 in the opening round of the Corales Puntacana Championship, the lowest score ever posted on the Corales Golf Course, and walked off with a two-shot lead. Matt Wallace, Keith Mitchell and Garrick Higgo are tied for second at 8-under 64. Five more players sit three back at 7 under: Matt NeSmith, Chris Gotterup, Andrew Putnam, Quade Cummins and Rikuya Hoshino.
Ten Birdies, Zero Mess
The card was as clean as it gets. Dahmen made 10 birdies and nothing else, five on each nine, and he did it in streaks. He had three birdies in a row on three separate occasions, the kind of rhythm that makes a scorecard look like a typo. The finish was the loudest part: three birdies over his last four holes turned a very good day into a record one.
He did it from the afternoon wave, the half of the draw that usually has to deal with more breeze. Not on Thursday. The wind stayed relatively calm all day, and just over half of the 132-man field broke 70. Even in that context, a 62 stands out by a mile.
Dahmen has history with afternoon tee times, and he was blunt about it. "I've historically struggled teeing off in the afternoon when people go low," he said, per Field Level Media. Thursday was the opposite of that story.
A Sour Taste, Turned Into Fuel
The backstory is what gives this round some bite. Dahmen came into the week ranked No. 176 in the world. His last start before this one was a missed cut at the Valero Texas Open, the event that hands its winner the last ticket to Augusta. So the Masters went on without him.
"I would say (missing) the Masters motivated me to get back on the golf course," Dahmen said, per Field Level Media.
He also knows exactly where he is. Dahmen's only PGA TOUR win came at this event in 2021, and this place clearly still feels like home turf. A course record on his return trip is a decent way to say so.
Wallace Keeps a Good Thing Going
Wallace is another former champion who looks right at home. The 2023 winner here put together a bogey-free 64 with eight birdies, starting the day by rolling in a 25-footer on the first hole. That set the tone for a round with almost no stress in it.
"It definitely exceeded my expectation today," Wallace said, per Field Level Media.
Two former champions sitting first and tied for second after Thursday says something about how this course rewards experience. The players who have solved it before were the ones who solved it again.
Higgo and Mitchell Make It a Crowd
Higgo and Mitchell got to 8 under by different roads. Higgo's 64 included one bogey, at the fifth, and the South African lefty piled up birdies around it to match Wallace. Mitchell had to overcome a little more, with bogeys at the 10th and 16th, which means the rest of Mitchell's card was loaded with red numbers.
Behind them, the 65 group is loaded with players who can go low in a hurry. Gotterup, Putnam and NeSmith are all TOUR players who can go on a run, and Hoshino and Cummins add some intrigue to a board that is still very much in its early stages.
Charley Hoffman and Aaron Baddeley, two veterans with plenty of miles on the TOUR, are tied for 10th at 6 under after 66s.
What Is on the Line
This is the opposite-field event to the RBC Heritage, which means no superstar names on the leaderboard and a lot of opportunity for everyone who is here. The winner gets a two-year TOUR exemption and a spot in the PGA Championship next month, the 300 FedExCup points available can change a season, and the event is part of the Aon Swing 5, the race that offers non-exempt players a path into the Truist Championship. For a player like Dahmen, who is still searching for a second TOUR title, or for anyone fighting to secure status, those prizes are about as big as it gets in April.
Whether the scoring stays this generous is another question. Friday brings a different wave order for everyone, and calm days on this stretch of coast are never guaranteed.
The Takeaway
Thursday was a statement round from a player with something to prove. Dahmen is two clear, the course record is his, and the chasers include a former champion and two players who were bogey-light themselves. Round 2 will show whether that kind of rhythm travels into Friday.
