Fever vs. Aces: Caitlin Clark's 27 Points and 15 Assists Win First Round Game 2 and Force Game 3
Caitlin Clark had 27 points and 15 assists, Kelsey Mitchell added 26, and the Indiana Fever beat the Las Vegas Aces 99-89 to even their first-round series 1-1 and force a Game 3.

Indiana was down double digits early in the second quarter and staring at a second straight blowout when Caitlin Clark wrestled A'ja Wilson into a jump ball, came away with the possession and strutted toward the corner, arm pumping, daring Gainbridge Fieldhouse to get louder. It was the kind of moment that flips a building.
From there, Clark put on a show: 27 points, 15 assists, seven rebounds and a slice of league history, as the Indiana Fever beat the defending champion Las Vegas Aces 99-89 on Tuesday to even their best-of-three first-round series at 1-1 and force a Game 3. Kelsey Mitchell added 26 points, Aliyah Boston had 22, and the crowd of 16,298 chanted "M-V-P" throughout the game.
The Aces Came Out Swinging
The opening looked like a Game 1 rerun. Las Vegas closed the first quarter on a 9-2 spurt, led 26-18 after one, and opened the second with a 3-pointer to make it 29-18. That was part of an 8-0 run, and the Aces stretched the lead to 33-22 with 7:26 left in the half. Their biggest lead of the night was 11.
Clark's jump-ball moment lit the fuse. Per the AP, she was a pest on defense and the emotional engine of the comeback, and the passes kept coming. A 9-0 run cut the lead to 33-31. A few minutes later, with the Aces clinging to a 39-38 edge, the Fever scored eight straight, capped by Raven Johnson's short jumper for a 46-39 lead with 1:17 left in the half. According to the AP, Indiana never trailed again. Indiana won the second quarter 30-17 and led 48-43 at halftime.
Indiana Survived Every Punch
The Fever built on it after the break. A 9-0 run late in the third turned a 60-54 game into 69-54, and Indiana carried a 72-60 lead into the fourth.
Las Vegas had one more push. Down 76-63 with 8:45 left, the Aces scored 10 straight to get within 76-73 at the 7:34 mark. Clark answered the way stars answer. With 4:56 left, she drilled a 27-footer, and at 4:30 she hit a 30-foot step-back 3, both assisted by Boston, to make it 90-79.
That is when a fourth-quarter exchange between Wilson and a fan stopped play at the 4:10 mark. Per the AP, Wilson drew a technical for leaving the court, though she stayed in the game. Las Vegas seemed to find extra juice afterward. Clark fouled out with 2:45 to play, and two trips to the line by Wilson pulled the Aces within 92-87.
Indiana did not blink. Boston scored on a driving layup with 1:52 left to make it 94-87, Sophie Cunningham hit two free throws, and Mitchell added three free throws in the final minute to close it out.
Clark's Masterpiece
Clark went 9 for 18 from the field and 5 for 11 from deep, made all four of her free throws and was a plus-15. Her 14 points and 11 assists before halftime made her, per the AP, the first player in league history to post a first-half points-assists double-double in a playoff game.
Her coach was impressed by more than the box score. Stephanie White praised the way Clark moved the ball and managed the game. "I thought how she managed the game was really good and her defensive energy I thought was terrific. It's what we need from her," White said.
Clark said the stakes were simple. "The way I looked at it, your back's up against the wall," she said. "This is the only opportunity you're guaranteed to have is these 40 minutes, and you know you're going to go down swinging if you're going to lose."
Mitchell bounced back in a big way after a 4-of-16 Game 1, scoring 26 on 7-of-16 shooting with nine made free throws. Boston was ruthless inside, going 10 of 15 with five assists. Indiana scored 58 points in the paint to Las Vegas' 26, which is not a typo.
Young and Wilson Kept It Close
Jackie Young was excellent in defeat, scoring 31 points with four 3-pointers and a perfect 13 of 13 at the line. Wilson finished with 22 points and nine rebounds, but she shot just 5 of 11 from the field and leaned on a 12-of-13 night at the stripe. Chelsea Gray had 10 points and seven assists. The Aces went 30 of 34 at the line, which kept them in it, but they could not match Indiana's work around the basket.
The Turning Point
The jump ball. Clark's tie-up of Wilson flipped the energy, and Indiana's two runs that followed, a 9-0 and an 8-0, turned an 11-point deficit into a lead the Fever never gave back. Everything good that happened to Indiana after that traces back to one hustle play.
Stats That Matter
- 27 and 15: Clark's points and assists, including a first-half points-assists double-double that, per the AP, no player in league history had produced in a playoff game.
- 58-26: Indiana's edge in points in the paint.
- 37 of 71: The Fever's field goal shooting, 52%.
- 30 of 34: Las Vegas at the free throw line, the only reason this stayed close late.
- 30-17: Indiana's second-quarter margin.
What It Means
The series is tied 1-1, and Game 3 is Thursday in Las Vegas, winner to the semifinals. The sixth-seeded Fever snapped a two-game losing streak, which had included a regular-season-ending loss at Minnesota and Game 1.
For Las Vegas, the loss ended an eight-game winning streak that stretched back through the final seven games of the regular season. The Aces won Game 1 by 17 behind Wilson's 38 points. This time Indiana flipped the script.
Closing Take
Clark summed up Indiana's mindset in one line. "But I think we had the mentality like this was one we were going to win, no matter what and do it for our fans," she said.
Game 3 in Las Vegas is the kind of matchup that writes itself: the defending champs at home, a Fever team that just found its swagger, and a guard who walked into a corner and told the whole building she was not done yet. Bring the popcorn.
