Houston Comets Unveil a New Logo as the WNBA's First Dynasty Prepares for Its 2027 Return

The Houston Comets revealed their new logo and colors on Thursday at POST Houston: an ascending H with a basketball streaking through it and four stars for the four championships the original Comets won from 1997 to 2000.

The Houston Comets showed Houston what they will look like when they return to the WNBA. The franchise unveiled its new logo and brand identity on Thursday, Oct. 29, at POST Houston, a little under a year before the team's first season back in 2027.

The primary mark is an ascending H with a basketball moving through its center, trailing a comet's tail, in red, silver and navy. Four stars inside the letter honor the four straight WNBA championships the original Comets won from 1997 through 2000, the league's first four titles, and a white star is a nod to Texas, according to USA Today's Rockets Wire, which reported the team's announcement.

"This is a landmark moment for the Comets, for Houston, and for the continued growth of women's sports," Gretchen Sheirr, president of business operations for the Houston Rockets and Comets, said in remarks reported by Rockets Wire. Sheirr said the franchise wanted to honor its championship history while building something modern and distinctly Houston.

The original dynasty was in the room. Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes and Tina Thompson, the stars of those four title teams, attended along with former head coach Van Chancellor, according to Rockets Wire. A pop-up shop selling the first Comets merchandise runs Friday through Sunday at the George R. Brown Convention Center, ABC13 reported.

The return has been in motion since March, when Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta agreed to buy the Connecticut Sun for a reported $300 million. The WNBA and NBA boards of governors unanimously approved the sale and the relocation in May. The Sun played out the 2026 season in Connecticut and will become the Comets at Toyota Center in 2027, giving Houston its first WNBA team since the original Comets folded in 2008.

Thursday's reveal covered the logo and colors only. Additional elements of the brand will be revealed in the coming months as the franchise builds toward its first season, the team said.

Details of the reveal are from reports by USA Today's Rockets Wire and ABC13 Houston; the ownership approval is from the league's May announcement as reported at the time.
