Gardner-Webb Hands Southeast Missouri State Its First OVC Loss, 34-10
Gardner-Webb outgained Southeast Missouri State 413 to 187 and handed the Redhawks their first OVC loss, 34-10, despite three Lan Farmer interceptions.

Southeast Missouri State walked into Saturday unbeaten in the OVC, favored by nearly a touchdown and playing at home. Gardner-Webb walked in at 2-6 and coming off a bye. Then the Runnin' Bulldogs went to Cape Girardeau and won 34-10, and it was not especially close after the first quarter.
Gardner-Webb outgained Southeast Missouri State 413 to 187, held the Redhawks without a touchdown from their offense, and overcame three interceptions from quarterback Lan Farmer to hand SEMO its first conference loss of the season. Farmer still threw for 209 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another, Adrian Cormier turned four carries into 76 yards and a score, and Kory Jones caught four passes for 87 yards and a touchdown.
For a team that entered 1-2 in the league, it was the best result of the season by a distance. For SEMO, which came in 5-3 overall and 3-0 in the OVC, it was a jarring afternoon.
A one-play opening statement
The first touchdown of the day took 10 seconds. With 7:54 left in the first quarter, Cormier took a handoff 59 yards for a score on the first play of the drive, and Gardner-Webb led 7-0.
SEMO answered without its offense doing much of anything. KJ McRae intercepted Farmer and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown at 4:17, tying the game 7-7. It looked, briefly, like the kind of break a favorite uses to settle into a game.
It wasn't. Gardner-Webb drove 39 yards in seven plays for a 40-yard field goal at 2:23 of the first quarter to go back in front 10-7, and the Runnin' Bulldogs never trailed at any point.
The second quarter belongs to Farmer
Farmer opened the second quarter by leading a five-play, 77-yard drive that ended with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Christian Vann at 12:16. SEMO kicked a 44-yard field goal at 8:35 after a nine-play, 49-yard drive, which made it 17-10 and turned out to be the Redhawks' last points of the day.
Gardner-Webb needed three plays and 1:01 to go 48 yards for its next score, with Farmer running it in from 8 yards out at 3:54 of the second quarter. That made it 24-10 at halftime, and SEMO did not score again.
The turning point: the response to the pick six
The game turned on what happened right after McRae's interception return. SEMO had just tied the game on a defensive score, and Gardner-Webb's quarterback had just thrown one the wrong way.
Instead of letting the game get away, Gardner-Webb responded with the field goal drive and then the Vann touchdown early in the second quarter. Within about seven minutes of game time, a 7-7 tie became a 17-7 lead, and SEMO's offense never generated enough to make it uncomfortable again.
That is the part that should encourage Gardner-Webb. Farmer finished 13-of-25 with three interceptions, and the Runnin' Bulldogs still won by 24. They did not need a clean game from their quarterback. They needed a defense that could live with it, and they got one.
Gardner-Webb's defense owns the afternoon
SEMO quarterback Braylen Ragland completed 16 of 35 passes for 128 yards with two interceptions, one by Jamarion Ravenell and a late one by Shawn Battle. Tyrell Reed Jr. ran 10 times for 36 yards, and the Redhawks managed just 56 rushing yards on 25 carries as a team. Jobe Bryant led SEMO with five catches for 46 yards. That is 187 total yards for a team that was unbeaten in conference play and favored by 6.5 points.
Linebacker Cahari Haynes led Gardner-Webb with seven tackles, and Trey Weems had a sack. SEMO converted 3 of 16 third downs, and its only touchdown came from McRae on defense. The Redhawks' offense managed three points.
On the other side, Nehemiah Scott led SEMO with nine tackles.
Penalties sink the Redhawks
If SEMO wants a single number to explain this, it is penalties. The Redhawks were flagged 12 times for 130 yards. Gardner-Webb was flagged twice for 20. That is 110 yards of free field position in a game where SEMO's offense was struggling to manufacture any of its own.
Gardner-Webb also won the first-down battle 25-12 and ran for 201 yards on 46 carries, which helped it control the clock. The Runnin' Bulldogs went just 2-for-10 on third down, but with 413 total yards they rarely needed it.
The capper came early in the fourth quarter: a 10-play, 76-yard drive that ate 5:14 and ended with Farmer's 18-yard touchdown pass to Jones at 9:51. That made it 34-10. Gardner-Webb also added a 43-yard field goal with 46 seconds left in the third quarter.
Key stats
Gardner-Webb: 413 total yards, 201 rushing yards, 25 first downs, two penalties for 20 yards, three turnovers. Farmer: 13-of-25, 209 yards, two touchdowns, three interceptions, plus a rushing touchdown. Cormier: four carries, 76 yards, one touchdown. Vann: 15 carries, 51 yards, plus two catches for 33 yards and a touchdown. Randy Young added 47 rushing yards on 13 carries. Jones: four catches, 87 yards, one touchdown.
SEMO: 187 total yards, 56 rushing yards, 12 first downs, 12 penalties for 130 yards, two turnovers. Ragland: 16-of-35, 128 yards, two interceptions. McRae: 50-yard interception return for a touchdown.
A streak snapped
It is worth remembering how SEMO got here. The Redhawks opened 2-3, then reeled off three straight conference wins: a 38-27 road win at Lindenwood to open OVC play, a 40-30 homecoming win over Western Illinois powered by 18 fourth-quarter points, and a 20-10 grind at Eastern Illinois in which they did not allow a second-half point. Kicker Justin Keller was named a Stats Perform FCS National Player of the Week along the way, and safety DJ Delmore twice earned OVC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
None of that showed up on Saturday. Keller's 44-yard field goal in the second quarter accounted for the only points SEMO's offense produced, and a defense that had shut out Eastern Illinois after halftime a week earlier gave up 413 yards to a team that came in with two wins. Ragland, who threw for three touchdowns in the Lindenwood win, never got the passing game going against Gardner-Webb's coverage.
For Gardner-Webb, the win is a reminder that its record was not the whole story. The Runnin' Bulldogs had a bye on Oct. 24, and they came out of it looking sharp, from Cormier's 59-yard run in the first quarter to Jones' touchdown in the fourth. The offense found big plays on the ground and through the air, and the defense never let SEMO's offense settle in.
What it means
For SEMO, the loss drops the Redhawks to 5-4 and 3-1 in the OVC. They had been rolling in league play, including a 20-10 win over Eastern Illinois that kept them unbeaten in the conference. This was the first real dent, and it came against a team that had won twice all season. The Redhawks play at Tennessee State next Saturday.
For Gardner-Webb, now 3-6 and 2-2 in the league, this is the kind of win that changes how the rest of a first season under head coach Kris McCullough reads. The Runnin' Bulldogs had a week off before this game and looked like a team that used it well. They host Lindenwood next Saturday.
The take
The scoreboard says Gardner-Webb won comfortably, and it did. But the story is how it won: with its quarterback throwing three interceptions, one of them returned for a touchdown, and the team still putting up 34 points and 413 yards. That is a sign of an offense with more than one way to hurt people and a defense that does not panic.
SEMO, on the other hand, beat itself as much as it got beaten. Twelve penalties and three points from the offense will lose to anyone. The Redhawks are still in a good spot in the league. They just learned on Saturday that the OVC will not hand it to them.
