ISCO Championship Round 3: Paul Peterson Outlasts the Storms to Take a One-Shot Lead

Rookie Paul Peterson shot 67 in a lightning-delayed third round that finished Sunday morning, taking a one-shot lead at the ISCO Championship as Chan Kim slipped to a 75.

Saturday at Hurstbourne did not end until Sunday morning, and by the time the third round was actually over, the man who had owned the ISCO Championship for two days was no longer leading it.

Paul Peterson, a 37-year-old PGA TOUR rookie making his 20th career start, holds a one-shot lead at 8-under 202 after a 3-under 67 in a round that was hit by two lightning delays, stopped by darkness and finished early Sunday morning. Luke List (65) and Kris Ventura (69) are tied for second at 7 under. Chan Kim, who started the day five clear, shot 75 and is two back at 6 under alongside David Skinns and Vince Whaley.

Two Delays and a Dark Finish

The weather never let this round find a rhythm. Play was first suspended for weather at 1:24 p.m. ET, before the leaders had even teed off, and resumed at 3 p.m. after a 1 hour, 36 minute wait. A second stoppage for lightning came at 5:10 p.m. and lasted 1 hour, 55 minutes, with play restarting at 7:05 p.m. Darkness finally ended things around 9 p.m., with 12 players still on the course, including both Peterson and Kim. They came back at 8 a.m. Sunday to finish before the final round.

That is nearly three and a half hours of sitting around on a Saturday when the leaders were trying to protect or build something. It showed.

Peterson Grabs the Wheel

Peterson came into the day at 5 under, six behind Kim, and treated the gaps between storms like a series of fresh starts. He birdied the second, dropped a shot at the fourth, rolled in a 20-footer for birdie at the fifth, and gave one back at the sixth. Then he got hot: birdies at the seventh, eighth, 10th, 11th and 14th pushed him to 10 under for the tournament and 5 under for the round when darkness hit, with his approach on the par-4 16th sitting about 30 feet away.

Sunday morning was less smooth. Peterson played his last three holes in 2 over and signed for 67, but it was still enough to keep him on top. For a player making his 20th TOUR start, carrying a one-shot lead straight from a Sunday-morning restart into the final round is a new kind of test.

Kim's Grip Slips

Kim had been the story of the week, with a 61 on Thursday and two straight eagles at the fourth. Saturday that magic dried up. He went through the first nine holes without a birdie and bogeyed the sixth along the way. A 14-inch tap-in birdie at the 10th looked like it might settle him, but he bogeyed the 11th and 12th right after, and he was 2 over through 12 when play stopped.

The overnight break did not help. Kim finished his remaining six holes in 3 over Sunday morning, signing for a 5-over 75 that turned a five-shot cushion into a two-shot deficit. He has 10 titles across the Japan Golf Tour and the Korn Ferry Tour, so he knows how to close. But this is the first time all week he is chasing instead of being chased.

List Beats the Weather

The smartest round of the day may have belonged to List, who got his work done before the sky closed in. List went bogey-free for a 5-under 65, with birdies at the second, seventh, eighth, 10th and 14th, including a 26-footer at the seventh. That vaulted him from the middle of the pack into a tie for second and into the final group.

"Yeah, it's nice to not have to come back in the morning, and I'll get a fresh start whenever we do tee off tomorrow," List said, per Field Level Media. He also pointed out that the leaders got to play in nicer conditions late in the evening, a reminder that nobody had the same golf course on Saturday.

Ventura, the Norwegian who shot 64 on Friday, steadied himself with a 69 and joins Peterson and List in the final pairing at 7 under.

The Board Going Into Sunday

Behind the top three, the tournament is wide open. Kim, Skinns (69) and Whaley (70) sit at 6 under. Patrick Fishburn (67) and Trevor Cone (68) are at 5 under. Another six players are at 4 under: Taylor Montgomery, Nick Hardy, Kevin Kisner, Thomas Rosenmueller, Beau Hossler and Hayden Springer. Auburn junior Jackson Koivun added a 68 and is tied for 15th at 3 under, a remarkable weekend for an amateur coming off a top 15 at the John Deere.

That is more than a dozen players within four shots of the lead on a course where Thursday produced a 61, and the final round goes off both tees with the weather still lurking.

A Rookie, a Veteran and a Fallen Leader

The final pairing is a fascinating mix. Peterson is chasing his first TOUR win. List has by far the most TOUR miles of the three and just showed he can go low here. Ventura proved on Friday that he can shake off a bad hole. And one group ahead, Kim gets a chance to show whether Saturday was a stumble or a turn.

The prize for whoever gets it done is 300 FedExCup points, a two-year TOUR exemption and a trip to next year's PGA Championship. After a Saturday that never really ended, the final round starts with nobody holding more than a one-shot edge.
