Jets vs. Penguins: Cole Perfetti Answers Nine Seconds After Pittsburgh's Equalizer in 3-2 Winnipeg Win
Pittsburgh tied it 2-2 midway through the third, and Cole Perfetti put Winnipeg back in front nine seconds later as the Jets rallied for a 3-2 win at PPG Paints Arena.

Declan Carlile had just done the thing every home crowd lives for. With 11:07 left in the third period at PPG Paints Arena, the Pittsburgh defenseman stepped into a Ben Kindel pass and buried it from the slot to tie the game 2-2, and the building was still on its feet when Cole Perfetti ended the party. Nine seconds. That's how long Pittsburgh's equalizer lasted.
Perfetti's one-timer from the high slot, set up by Josh Morrissey, gave the Winnipeg Jets a 3-2 win over the Penguins on Monday night, completing a third period in which Winnipeg erased a one-goal deficit, lost the lead and grabbed it right back. Alex Iafallo had a goal and an assist, Adam Lowry scored, and Clay Stevenson made 29 saves in his first game for the Jets.
Forty Quiet Minutes, Then Twenty Wild Ones
For two periods this looked like a game that would be settled by one bounce. The first ended scoreless. Pittsburgh finally broke through at 9:27 of the second when Kindel got a stick on a Carlile feed in front and tipped it past Stevenson. It was ruled out for a high stick at first, replay confirmed the tip was legal, and the Penguins carried a 1-0 lead into the second intermission.
Then the third period turned into a track meet. Iafallo tied it at 4:43, cashing in after a rebound of an Isak Rosen shot caromed off Erik Karlsson's stick to him below the goal line, where he squeezed a shot inside the right post. At 7:08, Iafallo drove the net, the puck squirted loose in the crease and Lowry backhanded it home for a 2-1 Jets lead.
Pittsburgh answered at 8:53 through Carlile, the defenseman scoring for the second straight game after entering the season with two career goals in 46 NHL games. Then came Perfetti at 9:02, and the scoreboard operator barely had time to update the graphic. Winnipeg's three goals came 4:19 apart. The Jets spent the rest of the night protecting the lead, including the final stretch with Sergei Murashov pulled for an extra attacker.
Perfetti Keeps Cooking, Stevenson Keeps Calm
Perfetti has now scored in back-to-back games and, according to NHL.com, has five points (two goals, three assists) through the first three games of the season. He played 19:59 on Monday, more than any other Jets forward who hit the scoresheet, and his goal was the kind of shot that does not need a second look: catch, release, see you later.
Iafallo made the third period happen. His goal broke Pittsburgh's shutout bid and his net drive manufactured Lowry's go-ahead goal, all in 10:24 of ice time. Lowry, meanwhile, gave the room a mission statement. "We've said it all along coming into camp, we're optimistic that we're a better team than we showed last year," he said.
Then there is Stevenson, who has the kind of origin story Hollywood would reject for being too neat. The Jets claimed him off waivers from the Washington Capitals on Sept. 28, and NHL.com noted that his Winnipeg debut came in the same building as his first NHL game, a 33-save night for Washington in a 5-2 loss at Pittsburgh on April 17, 2025. This time he stopped 29 of 31 shots and got the win. "Everyone's pulling on that rope, they're leaning on one another," Stevenson said.
On the other side, Kindel did his part again. The 19-year-old had a goal and an assist and has scored in consecutive games for the second time in his NHL career, per NHL.com, which noted that makes him the third teenager in the past 30 years to do it multiple times, alongside Sidney Crosby and Jordan Staal. That is the kind of company that makes a fan base start shopping for jerseys.
Nine Seconds That Swung It
Hockey teams talk all the time about the shift after a goal. Pittsburgh lost that shift in the most painful way possible. Carlile's tying goal should have been a launching pad, with the home crowd roaring and the Penguins carrying the momentum. Instead, Morrissey found Perfetti alone in the high slot on the very next sequence, and the noise drained out of the place.
Jets coach Scott Arniel framed it as a test of composure. "That was a mental game more than it was a physical one," he said. "At the end of the day, we just did a better job in the third of just staying dialed in and staying within our structure."
Penguins forward Rickard Rakell saw the same thing from the other bench. "Got a little bit impatient maybe, which kind of made the momentum go to their side," he said.
Stats That Matter
- Nine seconds: The gap between Carlile's tying goal and Perfetti's winner.
- 4:19: The window in which Winnipeg scored all three of its goals.
- 23-11: Winnipeg's edge in hits, even on a night its coach called more mental than physical.
- 35-31: Shots on goal in Winnipeg's favor, with Murashov making 32 saves.
- 0-for-3: Combined power-play results, as neither team scored with the extra man.
Back-to-Back Wins, Back-to-Back 3-2s
Winnipeg is 2-0-1 and unbeaten in regulation. After opening with a 4-3 overtime loss to Boston at home, the Jets won 3-2 at Detroit on Sunday afternoon and then 3-2 here the following night. Both wins came on the road. They host Colorado on Wednesday.
Pittsburgh drops to 2-1-0 after outscoring its first two opponents 13-5, with a 7-0 rout in Philadelphia and a 6-5 overtime win over Montreal. Coach Dan Muse pointed to the defensive details. "I think from a defensive standpoint there's definitely areas there that we've got to continue to take care of," he said. The Penguins visit Washington on Wednesday.
Closing Take
Murashov, who made 32 saves and deserved better, offered the best postgame wisdom of the night, reaching for a proverb: "You can think a lot, but there is a saying in Russian, 'Morning is wiser than evening.'" It is a nice sentiment, and Pittsburgh will need it. The Penguins can sleep on this one, but the replay of those nine seconds is going to be waiting on the video coach's laptop in the morning, and no amount of rest makes that clip look any better.
