Jonathan Bamba Scores Twice, Lewandowski Delivers Off the Bench as Chicago Fire Beat Rapids 4-2
Jonathan Bamba scored twice and substitutes Robert Lewandowski and Puso Dithejane struck late as Chicago Fire FC beat the Colorado Rapids 4-2 on Halloween, ending Colorado's 10-match home unbeaten run.

Colorado threw a Fan Appreciation Night party on Halloween with a playoff ticket sitting on the table. Chicago Fire FC crashed it and walked off with every treat in the house.
Jonathan Bamba scored twice, Robert Lewandowski came off the bench to score one and set up another, and the Fire beat the Colorado Rapids 4-2 on Saturday night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park (9:30 p.m. ET kickoff). The loss ended Colorado's 10-match home unbeaten run, a 7-0-3 stretch dating to the post-World Cup restart, per the club, and it took every one of the Rapids' clinching scenarios off the board for the night.
Two Equalizers, Then a Bench Takeover
For the first half hour, this looked like Colorado's party. Morgan Whittaker had a shot blocked in the second minute and glanced a header wide in the 18th before finding the range in the 22nd. Georgi Minoungou teed him up in the middle of the box, and Whittaker's left foot did the rest, ripping a shot into the top right corner. 1-0.
The Rapids kept coming. Chris Brady had to keep out a long-range Paxten Aaronson strike headed for the top right corner in the 26th minute, and Hamzat Ojediran, Minoungou and Wayne Frederick all had looks before the break. Chicago's chances were rarer: Noah Allen dragged a shot just wide in the 17th minute, and Bamba missed narrowly in the 31st.
In the 41st minute, Bamba stopped missing. He jabbed a right-footed finish in from point-blank range to the bottom left corner, and it was 1-1 at the half.
The second half was a haunted house of momentum swings. Bamba struck again in the 56th minute, this time with his left foot, turning in a Jonathan Dean cross from close range. 2-1 Chicago. The lead lasted two minutes. Minoungou served another cross, Aaronson arrived at the left side of the six-yard box and steered it into the bottom left corner. 2-2.
The benches took over from there. Colorado sent on Noah Cobb and Donavan Phillip in the 62nd minute. Chicago coach Gregg Berhalter answered a minute later with Anzor Mekvabishvili and Lewandowski, who replaced Maren Haile-Selassie. Nico Hansen kept the Rapids level in the 64th, saving a Bamba shot from the right side of the box.
In the 74th minute, Philip Zinckernagel found Lewandowski in the center of the box, and the substitute tucked a left-footed shot into the bottom left corner. 3-2. In the 87th, Berhalter sent on Puso Dithejane for Zinckernagel. About a minute later, Lewandowski slid a through ball into his path and Dithejane finished from the right side of the six-yard box. 4-2. Ballgame.
Colorado got nine minutes of stoppage time to manufacture a miracle. Brady said no, saving a Whittaker blast from outside the box in the 91st minute.
Bamba, Lewandowski and the Bench Mob
Jonathan Bamba: Two goals on five shots, three of them on target, one finish with each foot. The Fire's matchday notes said he earned this start with a goal and an assist off the bench against Orlando City SC on Wednesday. Audition passed. MLS put his season total at 12 goal contributions, six goals and six assists.
Robert Lewandowski: One shot, one goal, one assist, all in less than half an hour of what MLS called a rare substitute appearance. Per the league, the winner was his seventh goal of the season and his first since a Sept. 9 draw with Inter Miami, snapping an eight-game drought. Then he put the game to bed with the pass for Dithejane.
Puso Dithejane: On in the 87th minute, scored in the 88th. His only shot of the night went in.
Philip Zinckernagel: The assist on the winner. Chicago's pregame notes had him one goal or assist away from 10th place on the club's all-time list of goal contributions. Box checked.
Chris Brady: Two saves, both on shots headed for the top corners. The second stopped Colorado's final attempt.
Morgan Whittaker: A goal in a third straight match and five shots, tied with Bamba for the most of anyone on the field.
Georgi Minoungou: Assisted both Colorado goals. The club's roster notes had him one assist shy of a single-season career high entering the night. He finished with two before an injury forced him off.
The Turning Point: Minute 67
Colorado's attack ran through Minoungou. When play stopped for his injury in the 66th minute and Ted Ku-DiPietro replaced him a minute later, the Rapids lost the man who had set up both of their goals.
What followed was ugly for the hosts. Ojediran was booked in the 68th minute, Ku-DiPietro in the 70th, and Chicago went ahead four minutes later. From there to the final whistle, Colorado managed just two more shots: an Aaronson effort over the bar in the 81st and the Whittaker strike Brady saved. The Fire's subs, meanwhile, produced the last two goals and an assist between them.
Stats That Matter
- Possession: Colorado 57.3 percent, Chicago 42.7 percent. The Rapids had the ball. The Fire had the answers.
- Shots on target: Chicago 6, Colorado 4, on 14 shots apiece. Four goals from six on target is ruthless.
- Passing: Colorado completed 443 of 507 passes; Chicago completed 296 of 377 and went long 71 times.
- Crosses: Chicago completed 7 of 12 crosses, Colorado 5 of 17.
- Discipline: Colorado picked up four yellow cards to Chicago's two.
What It Means
Chicago improves to 16-7-10 with 55 points, which MLS says leaves the Fire fourth in the Eastern Conference. It is three unbeaten now: a 3-2 win at Atlanta United FC, a 2-2 home draw with Orlando and this. Per the club's notes, it was also Chicago's seventh road win of 2026, two short of the club record set last year. Next comes Decision Day against the Columbus Crew, where, according to MLS, the Fire are chasing a top-four spot and home advantage in the first-round best-of-three series.
Colorado falls to 12-7-14 with 43 points. MLS's own clinching breakdown gave the Rapids six routes to a playoff berth on Saturday, and every one of them required at least a draw. So the celebration waits, with one regular-season match left. The five-match unbeaten streak the Rapids carried into the night is gone, too.
Closing Take
Halloween is supposed to be about costumes. Chicago did not bother with one. The Fire let Colorado have the ball, the crowd and the early lead, then won the night with a winger who refused to miss from close range and a bench that hit like a jump scare. The Rapids will spend the week wondering how a game they controlled for long stretches got away. The annoying answer: Chicago finished, and Colorado did not.
