Morgan Whittaker Header Lifts Colorado Rapids Past West-Leading Vancouver Whitecaps
Morgan Whittaker headed in an 81st-minute rebound as the Colorado Rapids beat the West-leading Vancouver Whitecaps 1-0 despite six saves from Yohei Takaoka.

For 80 minutes, Yohei Takaoka had an answer for everything Colorado threw at him. In the 81st, the Rapids finally threw one more thing than he could handle. Takaoka stopped Donavan Phillip's shot, the ball cannoned off the crossbar, and Morgan Whittaker was standing underneath it to head home from point-blank range.
That was the only goal on Saturday night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, where the Colorado Rapids beat the Western Conference-leading Vancouver Whitecaps 1-0 in front of 15,605. It was a result Colorado had been threatening all night and one that pushed the Rapids further into the playoff picture. For Vancouver, it was a frustrating final stop on a five-game road swing.
Colorado Knock, Takaoka Answers
The Rapids came out with intent. Paxten Aaronson and Kosi Thompson both fired over from distance inside five minutes, and in the 11th minute Noah Cobb headed an Aaronson cross toward goal, only for Ralph Priso to block it before it could cross the line, per Vancouver's report. A minute later, Hamzat Ojediran sent a shot wide from the middle of the box.
Vancouver's evening got complicated early. Yadaly Diaby needed treatment in the 22nd minute, Emmanuel Sabbi went down three minutes later and was replaced by Bruno Caicedo because of an injury, and Diaby made way for Jeevan Badwal at halftime. Andrés Cubas tested Nico Hansen from distance in the 14th minute, but that was about all the visitors offered for a long stretch.
Colorado kept loading the box. Miguel Navarro and Georgi Minoungou both had headers saved by Takaoka in the 32nd and 38th minutes, Whittaker had an effort blocked, and Cobb headed over from a corner just before the break. Vancouver's best moment came deep in first-half stoppage time, when Caicedo's shot from a tight angle was saved by Hansen. It was 0-0 at the half, and it felt like a minor miracle for the Whitecaps.
The Siege Continues
The second half followed the same script. In the 57th minute, Whittaker rose to meet a Minoungou cross and Takaoka stretched to keep it out. A minute later, Rob Holding had a header blocked and then saw a left-footed shot saved. Oliver Larraz gave Colorado a scare in the 59th minute, but his shot from the left side of the box went high and wide.
Takaoka denied Whittaker again in the 63rd minute, this time from outside the box. Colorado had already started turning to the bench, with Phillip on for Navarro in the 62nd minute, and Sayed Abu Farhi replaced Minoungou in the 68th. Ryan Gauld had a shot blocked in the 80th minute for Vancouver, and then came the breakthrough.
Wayne Frederick found Whittaker in midfield, Whittaker slipped the ball to Abu Farhi, and Abu Farhi worked it wide to Phillip. Phillip's shot was saved by Takaoka, it bounced up off the crossbar, and Whittaker nodded it in. Two substitutes and the team's main attacking threat, all combining on one goal.
Vancouver pushed late. Mathías Laborda, on in the 87th minute, volleyed over a minute later after Rayan Elloumi headed the ball into his path, and Laborda had a header blocked five minutes into stoppage time. Colorado held on.
Stars of the Night
Morgan Whittaker was Colorado's most dangerous player all night. Four shots, three on target, one winning goal. According to the Rapids, it was his third goal of the season, and he was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for the performance.
Yohei Takaoka made six saves and kept Vancouver alive for 80 minutes. On almost any other night, that kind of performance earns at least a point.
Paxten Aaronson was Colorado's chief creator. ESPN's play-by-play credits him with setting up five chances, four of them with crosses, and he kept the Vancouver back line under constant pressure.
Donavan Phillip changed the game off the bench. He took two shots after coming on, and his effort in the 81st minute was the one Takaoka could only deflect up onto the crossbar, setting the table for Whittaker.
Nico Hansen did not have to do much, but he made both of his saves count. The Rapids said it was his eighth clean sheet of the season, tied for fifth-most in the league.
The Turning Point
The substitutions decided this match. Colorado brought on Phillip and Abu Farhi in the space of six minutes, and the two of them were involved in the winning sequence before Whittaker finished it. Vancouver were defending well enough to survive the starters' pressure, but fresh legs on the right side opened up the angle that finally beat them.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: Colorado outshot Vancouver 18-8.
- Shots on target: The Rapids put eight on target. Vancouver managed two.
- Saves: Takaoka made six saves. Hansen made two.
- Possession: Nearly even, with Colorado holding 50.8 percent.
- Crosses: Both teams attempted 17, but Colorado completed seven to Vancouver's two.
What It Means
Colorado improve to 12-6-13 (wins, draws, losses) with 42 points and, according to the club, sit eighth in the Western Conference after entering the night in the final playoff spot. The Rapids say they have now extended their home unbeaten streak to 10 matches and are unbeaten in their last four. Their 11 clean sheets this season rank fifth-most in MLS, per the club. This was their first win after three straight draws.
Vancouver fall to 16-7-8 with 55 points, but the Whitecaps remain first in the West with three matches remaining, according to the club. Their five-match road trip ended with one win, two draws and two losses. The two meetings this season ended one win apiece, after Vancouver won 3-1 in April.
The Closing Take
Whittaker's winner was pure pinball: shot, save, crossbar, header, jackpot. Colorado had been pulling the flipper all night, and Takaoka kept slapping the ball away until the machine finally paid out. For a team trying to hang on in the playoff race, the Rapids could not have picked a better night to hit the bonus round.
