Sounders vs. Whitecaps Preview: Seattle Plays for Its Playoff Life Against Top-Seeded Vancouver

Seattle visits BC Place on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET needing a win and help to clinch, while top-seeded Vancouver chases a perfect Cascadia season.

Vancouver already has the thing everybody else in the West wants. Seattle is still trying to get into the building. That is the lopsided, slightly cruel setup for Sunday's Cascadia finale, where a Whitecaps team with its top seed in the bag hosts a Sounders team that cannot afford to come home empty-handed.

Kickoff is Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET at BC Place, on Apple TV. Vancouver sits first in the Western Conference at 17-7-8 (wins-draws-losses) with 58 points and a +34 goal difference. Seattle is ninth at 11-10-11 with 43 points, and the club's own preview notes the Sounders have only two regular-season games left.

One Team Is Done Clinching. The Other Is Just Starting.

The Whitecaps' No. 1 seed became official on Saturday. MLSsoccer.com's Matchday 34 scenarios page listed an FC Dallas loss or draw at Sporting Kansas City as one of Vancouver's routes to the top spot, marked it complete, and Dallas did indeed draw 1-1 in Kansas City. So what is left for the 'Caps? Plenty of history, per the club. They have already secured a record ninth Cascadia Cup, and a win would make them the first team to win every Cascadia match in a single regular season after beating Portland 4-1 and 3-2 and winning 2-0 at Seattle in August. The club also says they have a shot at becoming only the fourth team in MLS history with back-to-back 60-plus-point seasons. More than 30,000 fans are expected with the upper bowl open for the regular-season home finale.

Seattle's path is narrower. Per the league's scenarios page, the Sounders clinch a playoff berth Sunday if they win at Vancouver and Portland loses or draws at home against Houston. That Portland game does not kick off until 9:45 p.m. ET, so even a win in Vancouver means a long evening of refreshing the standings. The bigger problem is form: Seattle is winless in four since a 3-0 win at New England on Oct. 10, with losses to Dallas and Houston and draws with Montréal and San Diego. Wednesday's 1-0 home loss to Houston stung, and the Sounders failed to score in two of those four games.

There is also a grudge layer here. Seattle's preview points out this is the fourth meeting of 2026: the Sounders won 3-0 at BC Place and 2-1 at ONE Spokane Stadium to knock Vancouver out of the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16, and Vancouver answered with that 2-0 win at Lumen Field.

Where It Gets Decided

Brian White vs. Andy Thomas. White is the tip of a Whitecaps attack that has scored a club-record 67 regular-season goals, per the club. He has 18 league goals, tied for fourth in the Golden Boot race according to Seattle's preview, on a team-high 97 shots. On Wednesday he headed in his 100th MLS goal against San Diego, which the Whitecaps say makes him only the 17th player in league history to reach triple digits. Waiting for him is Thomas, who has made 114 saves this season per ESPN. Seattle's club notes rank him fifth in the league in save percentage at 74 percent. If Thomas wins enough of those duels, the Sounders have a puncher's chance.

Seattle's creativity vs. Vancouver's patience. Albert Rusnák has 13 assists and a team-high 60 shots, so nearly everything good the Sounders build runs through him. Seattle has found goals from different places lately, with Dejan Joveljic and Sebastian Gomez each scoring twice in the last five matches. But Vancouver does not need the ball to hurt you. In the 4-1 win over San Diego, the 'Caps had 43.9 percent possession and still put 10 shots on target. If Seattle pushes numbers forward chasing three points, the counterattack lane opens, and Vancouver's fourth goal against San Diego came on exactly that kind of fast break.

Players to Watch

  • Brian White, Whitecaps forward: 18 goals in 30 matches. Seattle's preview says this is his fourth straight season with at least 15 regular-season goals.
  • Thomas Müller, Whitecaps attacker: nine goals and eight assists in 24 matches, plus the second goal in August's 2-0 win at Lumen Field.
  • Albert Rusnák, Sounders midfielder: 13 assists in 31 matches. He is the closest thing Seattle has to a cheat code right now.
  • Andy Thomas, Sounders goalkeeper: 114 saves. On a day when Seattle probably needs a clean sheet or close to it, he is the whole ballgame.

Team News

Vancouver will be without forward Rayan Elloumi, who is suspended after picking up a second caution late in the San Diego win, per the MLS disciplinary summary. Elloumi scored the opener in the August meeting. The same league report lists four Whitecaps (Tristan Blackmon, Andres Cubas, Tate Johnson and Édier Ocampo) and two Sounders (Hassani Dotson and Peter Kingston) as one caution away from a suspension or fine. The league's player availability report had not yet posted either club's list when we checked, so there is no injury news to pass along.

By the Numbers

  • DraftKings lists Vancouver at -170 on the moneyline, Seattle at +350 and the draw at +330, with a total of 3.5 goals, via ESPN, as of Saturday.
  • Vancouver's last five: two wins, two draws, one loss. Seattle's last five: one win, two draws, two losses.
  • ESPN's log of the last five meetings is dead even at 2-2-1, including Vancouver's 2-0 win in Seattle on Aug. 16.
  • Per the Whitecaps, Sunday is the 160th meeting in official competition since both clubs began in 1974, with Vancouver holding 55 wins, 76 losses and 28 draws.
  • Vancouver's 10 home wins this season tie the club record for an MLS regular season, per the club.

The Pick

Seattle has every reason to play like its hair is on fire, and that desperation should keep this tight for an hour. But Vancouver at home, with a crowd north of 30,000 and a perfect Cascadia season on the line, is a different animal, and the Sounders have not won in four. White finds one more header, Seattle answers once, and the 'Caps close the regular season at BC Place the way they have spent most of it.

Our pick: Whitecaps 2, Sounders 1. That would leave Seattle's playoff fate to Decision Day.

Odds from DraftKings via ESPN as of Oct. 31. Standings, records and stats from ESPN. Playoff scenarios from MLSsoccer.com, suspensions from the MLS disciplinary summary, and club notes from whitecapsfc.com and soundersfc.com.
