Wave vs. Bay FC Preview: San Diego Needs a Win and a Gotham Slip to Steal the Shield
San Diego Wave FC visits Bay FC on NWSL Decision Day, Sunday at 5 p.m. ET in San Jose, needing a win and a Gotham loss to claim the NWSL Shield.

San Diego Wave FC can do everything right on Sunday and still go home without the trophy. That is the cruel arithmetic of the NWSL Shield race heading into Decision Day: the Wave have to beat Bay FC in San Jose, and they need Gotham FC to lose to Utah on the other side of the country, at the exact same time. Control the controllables, then stare at a phone.
Kickoff is 5 p.m. ET (2 p.m. local) on Sunday at PayPal Park in San Jose, California. San Diego arrives at 17-4-8 (wins-draws-losses) with 55 points, second in the table and three behind Gotham. Bay FC is 7-6-16 with 27 points, sitting 14th and eliminated weeks ago, but it is also Bay's Fan Appreciation Match, and nothing says thank you to a fanbase quite like ruining a contender's title hopes.
The Shield Math, Straight From the League
Per the league's Decision Day scenarios, Gotham clinches its first Shield with a win or a draw against Utah, and it also gets there if San Diego draws or loses. San Diego takes its second Shield only with a win AND a Gotham loss. Gotham's own preview notes that its fans will be watching the score from San Jose, which tells you exactly how much this game matters in New Jersey too.
The good news for San Diego is that the floor is already high. The Wave locked up a top-four finish and a home quarterfinal in Week 25, per the league, and Bay's preview notes that any result short of the Shield leaves them no lower than third. So this is a free swing at hardware, not a nervous fight for a playoff spot.
Bay's season has been over since Week 23, and the recent form is rough. Bay has not won since a 2-0 home win over Racing Louisville on Sept. 20, dropping three of its last four and scoring four goals in that stretch. It lost 2-0 at Angel City last week despite six saves from Jordan Silkowitz.
San Diego, meanwhile, is unbeaten in six and has scored 12 goals across that run, per Bay's preview, with five straight wins before last Sunday's 2-2 draw with Boston Legacy FC. Bay's preview also points out that the Wave have lost only once since Aug. 14, and that was a 1-0 defeat at Seattle on Sept. 6 after a 13th-minute red card left them a player short.
Where This One Gets Decided
This is San Diego's attack against one very busy goalkeeper. Silkowitz has made 119 saves this season, per ESPN, and the league voted her Week 26 Save of the Week for a lunging stop at Angel City, her second such award this year. She also owns the best memory in this matchup: on May 3, she saved Kenza Dali's 17th-minute penalty at Snapdragon Stadium, and Bay held on for a 1-0 win thanks to Racheal Kundananji's fifth-minute goal. That is the most recent meeting between these clubs.
San Diego will not lack for volume. Trinity Byars leads the Wave with 11 goals, Melanie Barcenas has seven, Ludmila has taken a team-high 65 shots and Lia Godfrey leads the team with six assists. The engine, though, has been Gia Corley. Bay's own preview credits her with four goals in six matches since Sept. 12 and a goal or assist in five straight through Oct. 17. Then she went out and scored against Boston last week, finishing a Barcenas pass on the break.
The quieter edge is possession. Kristen McNabb has completed 1,835 passes this season, and Kennedy Wesley has 1,684. If San Diego's back line keeps the ball the way those numbers suggest, Bay will spend long stretches chasing, and Silkowitz will be busy again.
For Bay, the route to goal runs through Karlie Lema, the club's leading scorer with eight goals on 59 shots. Alex Pfeiffer, who has three goals and three assists, is listed as out.
Players to Watch
Trinity Byars, San Diego. Eleven goals in 24 matches. She is the finisher San Diego needs if Silkowitz is in the mood again.
Gia Corley, San Diego. Five assists on ESPN's leaders list, plus that scoring run since mid-September. She is the connective tissue in this attack.
Jordan Silkowitz, Bay. A hundred and nineteen saves, a penalty stop against this exact opponent in May, and a home crowd that came for a party. The whole upset case rests on her.
Karlie Lema, Bay. Eight goals, and the only Bay player with more than three on ESPN's leaders list. Bay needs her to make one chance count.
Team News
San Diego lists Trinity Armstrong, Dudinha and Cat Macario out with season-ending knee injuries, plus Nya Harrison (knee) and Kiki Pickett (ankle). Bay is without Pfeiffer (shoulder), Joelle Anderson (head), Taylor Huff (ankle), and Anouk Denton and Alyssa Malonson, who are both on the season-ending list. Nobody on either side is listed as questionable.
By the Numbers
- DraftKings lists San Diego at +100 on the moneyline, Bay at +205 and the draw at +260, with a total of 2.5 goals, via ESPN, as of Saturday.
- In ESPN's last five meetings, San Diego has three wins and Bay two, including Bay's 1-0 win in San Diego on May 3.
- San Diego is unbeaten in six, with 12 goals in that span, per Bay FC.
- Bay is winless in four since Sept. 20.
- Goal difference: San Diego plus-13, Bay minus-16.
The Pick
Bay has the keeper and the motivation to make this weird, and the May result proves it can happen. But San Diego is the better, deeper team on current form, and it has won its last three road matches. The bigger question is out of the Wave's hands.
Our pick: San Diego 2-1. Byars and Corley score, Silkowitz makes the highlight reel anyway, and then everyone in the San Diego camp finds out what happened in Harrison.
