Gisele Thompson Strikes as Angel City FC Blanks Bay FC to Stretch Unbeaten Run to Nine
Gisele Thompson and substitute Riley Tiernan scored as Angel City FC beat Bay FC 2-0 at BMO Stadium, holding the visitors without a shot on target and extending its unbeaten run to nine.

Angel City FC did not need its starting lineup to finish the job on Saturday night. It needed its bench, and the bench showed up like the cavalry in the last reel of a Western.
Gisele Thompson scored four minutes into the second half off a pass from halftime substitute Maiara Niehues, and Riley Tiernan, on the field for all of five minutes, buried the clincher in the 83rd off a feed from fellow substitute Nealy Martin. Angel City beat Bay FC 2-0 at BMO Stadium, stretched its unbeaten run to nine matches and held the visitors without a single shot on target.
Forty-Five Minutes of Knocking
The first half was one long siege on Jordan Silkowitz's goal. Ary Borges headed wide from the six-yard box in the third minute, Silkowitz saved Taylor Suarez's shot in the eighth, and Angel City piled up five corners before the break.
The half's strangest subplot was a running feud on the wing. Savy King was booked in the 13th minute for a foul on Agostina Holzheier, then fouled Holzheier three more times by the 23rd minute. Interim head coach Leif Smerud replaced her with Niehues at halftime. Evelyn Shores forced another save from Silkowitz in the 34th, and two more Angel City efforts were blocked before halftime, but it was 0-0 at the break.
Thompson Breaks the Seal
Smerud's halftime change paid off almost instantly. In the 49th minute, Niehues slipped a pass through to Thompson, who ripped a right-footed shot from the right side of the box into the top right corner. Per the club, it was the defender's fifth goal of the season, fresh off her recognition as NWSL Player of the Week.
"I am very impressed by Gisele," Smerud said. "She's been fantastic for us. She can play every game, every minute. She has both physicality and technicality to be such a young player at a very high level. She's a machine as well. She does her job and more."
Bay FC's best response came almost immediately. In the 52nd minute, Kennedy Fuller swung in a set piece and Dorian Bailey headed it wide from the middle of the box, one of the visitors' few clean looks all night. Angel City answered by turning the screw again: Shores headed a Thompson cross over two minutes later, and Ally Sentnor dragged a left-footed shot high and wide on a fast break just after the hour. By then Smerud had already made his second change, and the next wave was coming.
The Wall in Bay Blue
If Bay FC had a hero, it was Silkowitz, who finished with six saves and kept the scoreline respectable for far longer than it had any right to be. She stopped Shores again in the 56th minute, survived a double whammy from Borges and Sentnor in the 65th, and got down to deny Sveindís Jónsdóttir from distance in the 70th. Her teammates helped by clearing 32 balls on the night.
The problem was at the other end. Bay FC took five shots and none were on target. Karlie Lema's shot in the 70th minute was blocked, Cristiana Girelli's header was blocked in the 80th, and Hannah Bebar's effort from distance in the 88th just missed the top right corner. Head coach Emma Coates called it "a long, difficult night at the office" and said she thought her team "might have pinched one on the counter in the second half."
The Turning Point
Angel City's bench management decided this game. Niehues came on at halftime and assisted the opener four minutes later. Martin entered for Carina Lageyre, who had been booked in the 52nd minute, and later set up the second goal. Tiernan replaced Sentnor in the 78th minute and scored from very close range five minutes after that, her second goal of the season. Martin's assist was her second of the year, per the club.
"What makes our team so special is not just our togetherness, but our bench, the energy they bring, and the way they come on," captain Sarah Gorden said. "When you have a bench that is sacrificing for the team, and then comes on and makes a difference, that's how you close out games."

What It Means
Angel City improves to 14-7-8 with 49 points and has now gone nine straight matches without a loss. The club had already celebrated its playoff berth, framed this result as a step toward hosting a playoff match, and noted that the win also marked Angel City's first-ever 50-goal season. Anderson collected her 10th clean sheet of the year without making a save, and she made clear the goal now is carrying form into the postseason.
"We really want to go into the playoffs with a lot of good momentum from having really good performances these last two games of the regular season," Anderson said.
Angel City closes the regular season against Boston Legacy FC on Nov. 1 at Dignity Health Sports Park.
Bay FC falls to 7-6-16 with 27 points and is winless in four. Angel City also won the first meeting 3-1 in San Jose in March. Bay FC's finale comes Nov. 1 at PayPal Park against San Diego Wave FC, and with the Wave still chasing the Shield, Bay has a chance to play spoiler on Decision Day.
Closing Take
Most teams treat the bench like a fire extinguisher, only for emergencies. Angel City treats it like a second wave of headliners, and on Saturday the encore was better than the opening act. A team that wins this way in October is the kind nobody wants to see in November.
