Caiya Hanks Late Equalizer Rescues Portland Thorns in 2-2 Draw at Bay FC
Caiya Hanks pounced on a rebound in the 86th minute as the Portland Thorns drew 2-2 with Bay FC at PayPal Park, wiping out a Bay lead built on two Karlie Lema assists.

Caiya Hanks would not let the ball die. With four minutes left at PayPal Park, the Portland Thorns forward barged into the box, saw her first effort knocked away, pounced on the rebound and slotted the second chance low into the corner. Just like that, Bay FC's lead was gone.
That finish earned the Thorns a 2-2 draw with Bay FC on Sunday in San Jose, in front of 14,451 fans. Morgan Weaver put Portland ahead early, Caroline Conti and Kennedy Fuller turned it around for the hosts with Karlie Lema setting up both, and Hanks dragged the visitors back level just when it looked like Bay was about to bank three points.
Weaver Strikes, Then the VAR Plot Twist
Portland started like a team that wanted this over by halftime. Reilyn Turner forced a save from Jordan Silkowitz with a close-range header in the eighth minute, Pietra Tordin skimmed a header just past the top corner off the ensuing corner, and in the 10th minute the Thorns broke through. Nina Nijstad laid the ball off for Weaver, who placed a right-footed shot into the top right corner beyond Silkowitz's dive.
Bay steadied, and then came the strangest stretch of the day. Around the half-hour mark, Agostina Holzheier was awarded a penalty after winning a foul, only for a Video Assistant Referee review to reverse it. Bay barely had time to sulk. Within minutes, Lema sprinted clear, drew Mackenzie Arnold off her line, rounded her and squared it for Conti, who tapped into the open net from point-blank range in the 33rd minute. Per Bay FC, it was Conti's second goal of the season.
Both sides had looks before the break. Arnold stopped Lema from the left side of the six-yard box in stoppage time, and Dorian Bailey headed wide. It was 1-1 at halftime, and it felt earned on both ends.
Fuller Flips It
Bay owned the early part of the second half; by the club's count, it was sitting on close to 60 percent of possession midway through the period. Fuller fired a warning shot from outside the box in the 57th minute that forced a save from Arnold, and Conti missed twice in back-to-back minutes.
Fuller did not miss the next one. In the 67th minute, Lema slipped her the ball, Fuller pushed it through a defender's legs and lashed a left-footed shot into the top left corner. It was Lema's second assist of the afternoon and, for about 20 minutes, the winning goal.
Portland responded by emptying the toolbox. Isabella Obaze and Cassandra Bogere came on in the 72nd minute, and Tordin had two chances from the left side of the six-yard box in the 73rd minute, one blocked and one dragged wide. Julie Dufour replaced Turner in the 81st. Then Hanks went to work in the 86th, and the score was 2-2. Tordin nearly stole it in stoppage time, but Silkowitz got down to her shot from the right side of the box.
The Stars: Lema the Engine, Hanks the Closer
Lema did not score, and she was still the best player on the field for long stretches. Two assists, a shot on target and a part in most of Bay's best moments. Per the club, it was her second match this season with multiple scoring contributions, and it gave her four contributions in her last four matches.
Fuller's goal was a reminder of how much she can do from the attacking midfield role ESPN listed her in: two shots, both on target, one of them a nutmeg-and-finish combo.
Hanks finished with three shots and two on target. The Thorns noted that both of her goals in 2026 have come after the 85th minute, which officially makes her the player you want on the field when the clock is a problem. Weaver's goal was her second of the year, and both have come on the road, per Portland.
The Turning Point: Portland Refused to Fold
The VAR reversal could have deflated Bay, and instead it scored two minutes later. The real hinge came after Fuller's goal, when Portland's changes tilted the field back. From the 72nd minute on, the Thorns put up a steady run of attempts while Bay's best chances dried up. Hanks' goal was not a fluke against the run of play. It was the payoff for 15 minutes of leaning on the door.
Stats That Matter
- Possession: Bay 50.6 percent, Portland 49.4 percent. Truly a coin flip.
- Shots: Portland 15, Bay 14. On target: 5 apiece.
- Saves: Silkowitz and Arnold made three each.
- Corners: Portland won six to Bay's three, and its first goal came right after a corner sequence.
- Long balls: Bay attempted 63 but completed only 14; Portland completed 20 of 44.
What It Means
Portland moved to 12-8-8 (wins, draws, losses) and 44 points. After a 4-2 home loss to Boston Legacy FC in its previous match, a point on the road was a decent salvage, and the Thorns say they are now unbeaten in their last four road matches, with two wins and two draws. They have also scored 23 road goals this season, which the club calls the most in a single season in its history. By the end of the weekend, Portland sat one point ahead of Seattle Reign FC and two ahead of the North Carolina Courage, who are its next opponent at Providence Park.
Bay is 7-6-15 with 27 points. The point snapped a two-match losing streak after defeats to the Orlando Pride and the Kansas City Current, and Bay pointed out that this was its 10th multi-goal game of the season after managing 12 across its previous two seasons combined. It also improved on May's 2-0 loss in Portland. Bay visits Angel City FC next before closing at home against San Diego Wave FC on Decision Day.
Closing Take
Bay head coach Emma Coates summed up the mood in two sentences. "I could taste three points if I'm honest," she said, before adding: "As I say, just disappointing that we let three points slip through our hands." She also credited a group that was stretched thin by international duty and injuries. That is the frustrating part for Bay: this was a performance worth three points, undone by a forward who simply refused to let a loose ball stay loose.
