Royals vs. Gotham Preview: A Draw Is Enough for Gotham's First NWSL Shield

Gotham FC has been sitting on top of the NWSL table for 12 straight weeks, according to the club, and on Sunday it finally gets to cash the ticket. Beat or draw Utah Royals at Sports Illustrated Stadium and the first NWSL Shield in club history is Gotham's. Lose, and it can still get there if San Diego fails to win in San Jose. That is about as soft a landing as Decision Day ever offers.

Kickoff is 5 p.m. ET on Sunday in Harrison, New Jersey, with ESPN carrying the national broadcast. Gotham comes in at 17-7-5 (wins-draws-losses) with 58 points, three clear of San Diego. Utah is 14-5-10 with 47 points, sixth in the table, and already headed to the playoffs for the first time in club history after clinching last weekend.

Gotham Holds the Pen

The league's scenarios are simple on Gotham's side: a win or a draw clinches the Shield, and so does any San Diego result short of a win at Bay FC. Gotham's preview adds the stakes behind the trophy. A Shield-clinching result locks up the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, and the club has already announced it will host a quarterfinal at Sports Illustrated Stadium on Sunday, Nov. 8.

There is a little club history on the table too. Gotham has 29 home points this season, per the club, and can tie its record of 30 with a draw or break it with a win. A victory would also tie the club mark of nine home wins in a regular season. In other words, Harrison has been a fortress, and Gotham's only home loss this season was a 2-0 defeat to Denver back on March 25.

Utah's motivation is different but real. The league's Decision Day preview says Angel City and Utah are ready to pounce if Washington or Kansas City slips, which keeps a home quarterfinal theoretically alive for the Royals. Utah's own preview notes that a win would give the club 50 points, matching what it collected over the previous two seasons combined. That is a glow-up worthy of a montage.

The problem is form. Utah is winless in three, with a 1-1 draw at Louisville, a 0-2 loss to Kansas City and last week's 0-0 draw with Seattle. That is one goal in three matches, and the injury report explains a lot of it.

Where This One Gets Decided

Utah is missing its spine. Mina Tanaka, who leads the Royals with nine goals and a team-high 59 shots, is listed as out with a hamstring injury. Cece Delzer, second on the team with 57 shots and the scorer of Utah's goal in July's meeting, is out with a thigh injury. Narumi Miura (thigh), Alex Loera and KK Ream (both on the season-ending list) are out too. That leaves Utah's top two shot-takers watching from the stands against the best team in the league.

So the creative load falls on Cloé Lacasse, who has eight goals and a team-high 10 assists. She will need help from somewhere, because Gotham does not give much away at home. The good news for Utah is that its back line has been sturdy lately: Gotham's preview notes the Royals held Seattle to one shot on target last week, and Mandy McGlynn has 58 saves on the season.

Gotham's edge is the dead ball. Last week at Orlando, Midge Purce headed in a Guro Reiten cross and Tierna Davidson finished from close range after a corner. In July's 3-1 win in Utah, Davidson scored first-half stoppage-time off another Reiten corner delivery. Reiten leads Gotham with six assists, and Davidson has completed a team-high 1,721 passes. Expect Utah to spend a lot of Sunday defending set pieces.

The wild card is Jaedyn Shaw. Gotham's leading scorer, with 10 goals and five assists, is listed as questionable with a knee issue, and Rose Lavelle is questionable with a neck issue. If both sit, Gotham leans even harder on Reiten, Purce and Davidson.

Players to Watch

Guro Reiten, Gotham. Six assists, including the cross for Purce's header last week and the corner delivery for Davidson's goal in July. Her service might be the Shield's most valuable asset.

Tierna Davidson, Gotham. Scored against Utah in July and against Orlando last week. A center back with that many passes and that kind of nose for goal is a cheat code.

Cloé Lacasse, Utah. Eight goals and 10 assists. With Tanaka and Delzer out, nearly everything good Utah does will run through her.

Mandy McGlynn, Utah. Fifty-eight saves, and her stops kept last week's clean sheet intact. Utah's upset path starts with a big day from her.

Team News

Gotham lists Bruninha, Jordynn Dudley, Kayla Duran and Emily Sonnett out on the season-ending list, and Dudley's 52 shots are a team high. Shaw (knee) and Lavelle (neck) are questionable. Utah is without Tanaka, Delzer, Miura, Loera and Ream, per the league's availability report.

By the Numbers

  • DraftKings lists Gotham at -155 on the moneyline, Utah at +400 and the draw at +230, with a total of 2.5 goals, via ESPN, as of Saturday.
  • Gotham is unbeaten in its last five meetings with Utah, with four wins and a draw, including a 3-1 win at America First Field on July 10.
  • Gotham has been held scoreless just once in five home meetings with Utah, per the club.
  • Utah has scored once in its last three matches.
  • Goal difference: Gotham plus-14, Utah plus-7.

The Pick

Utah has earned its playoff party, and a team with nothing to lose can be dangerous. But this version of the Royals is missing its leading scorer and both of its top two shot-takers, and a point at home is enough for Gotham, which has lost there once all season. The Shield is Gotham's to drop.

Our pick: Gotham 2-0. A Reiten set piece breaks it open, Gotham's defense does the rest, and the Shield stays in New Jersey.
