Ann-Katrin Berger's Seven Saves Carry Gotham FC Past the Orlando Pride
Midge Purce and Tierna Davidson scored and Ann-Katrin Berger made seven saves as Gotham FC beat the Orlando Pride 2-1 to stay atop the NWSL Shield race.

Orlando had the shots. Orlando had the chances. Orlando had Marta firing away from every angle she could find. Gotham FC had Ann-Katrin Berger, and on Sunday that turned out to be the better hand.
Berger made seven saves, Midge Purce and Tierna Davidson scored, and Gotham beat the Orlando Pride 2-1 at Inter&Co Stadium to keep its grip on the NWSL Shield race. Solai Washington pulled one back for the Pride in the 65th minute, but Orlando's 19 shots and eight on target were not enough to spoil Gotham's afternoon in front of 11,544 fans at the Pride's final home match of 2026.
Purce Rises, Berger Stands Tall
The Pride came out swinging. Washington blazed high and wide from the six-yard box in the second minute, and Kerry Abello and Angelina both got looks inside the first 17 minutes. Gotham, meanwhile, kept running into the offside flag, with Sam Kerr and Guro Reiten both caught in the minutes before the opener.
Then Reiten got the timing right. In the 22nd minute she whipped in a cross, and Purce rose at the right side of the box to power a header just under the crossbar. It was Gotham's first real moment of quality, and it was enough to change the mood.
Orlando kept coming. Ally Lemos and Abello both forced Berger into saves within four minutes of the goal, and Marta tested her from a tight angle in first-half stoppage time. Davidson picked up a yellow card in the first minute of that stoppage, and Gotham went to the locker room up 1-0 and grateful for it.
The Marta Show, Starring Berger
The second half opened with Marta on a mission. Berger stopped her from the six-yard box in the 49th minute, denied Hailie Mace two minutes later, and then saved Marta's left-footed shot toward the top left corner in the 56th. Marta finished with four shots, three on target and zero goals, and she sounded exactly as frustrated as that line suggests.
"Of course, the result was not what we wanted, you know, we knew from the beginning that Gotham came here to take 3 points. They are in a fight for the Shield and it's normal," Marta said. "The game should have been very different for us."
The Turning Point
Gotham's second goal flipped the match from tense to manageable. In the 61st minute, Cosette Morché saved Reiten's header and conceded a corner. From the ensuing sequence, Morché kept out Jaelin Howell's header, and Davidson was quickest to the loose ball, finishing from close range in the 62nd minute. Howell was booked a minute later, but nobody in teal cared much.
Orlando answered fast. Washington pounced on a turnover in midfield, held off two defenders, raced in alone and slotted home to the bottom left corner in the 65th minute, per the Pride. It was her second goal of the season and her second in as many matches, and interim head coach Yolanda Thomas was effusive afterward, saying Washington has "found a way to figure out how to be an impactful player for 90 minutes now."
From there, it was a siege. Berger saved Washington's left-footed effort in the 81st minute, and two minutes later Thomas made a triple change, sending on Kylie Nadaner, Luana and Summer Yates. Haley McCutcheon headed wide in the 88th minute, Washington put another header wide a minute later, and in the seventh minute of stoppage time Orlando crammed three attempts into one frantic sequence: McCutcheon and Oihane Hernández were both blocked, and Viviana Villacorta's shot flew high and wide. Gotham finished with 17 clearances, and every one of them felt necessary.
Star Turns
Berger's seven saves were the difference, and she made them on a day when play was halted three separate times for an injury to her. She still finished all 90 minutes. She kept getting back up and kept getting in the way.
Purce's header was her only shot of the day, which is efficiency Gotham will happily take. Davidson, a center back, scored with her only shot on target and committed three fouls, one of which earned her that yellow. Reiten assisted the opener, delivered the cross that set up the second and put one of her two shots on target before leaving in stoppage time. For Orlando, Washington led everybody with five shots and two on target.
Stats That Matter
- Shots: Orlando 19, Gotham 9.
- Shots on goal: Orlando 8, Gotham 6.
- Saves: Berger 7, Morché 3.
- Possession: Gotham 59.6 percent, Orlando 40.4.
- Discipline: Gotham committed 12 fouls and took both yellow cards.
What It Means
Gotham improves to 17-7-5 with 58 points, three clear of San Diego after the Wave drew Boston later Sunday. The club called this a critical victory in the Shield race, and it was also a bounce-back after a 1-0 loss at Washington the previous week. Gotham hosts the Utah Royals on Decision Day, Nov. 1, with San Diego three points back and one game left.
Orlando drops to 11-3-15 with 36 points. The Pride have now scored in 11 straight NWSL matches, their longest streak since a 16-match run from Sept. 18, 2023, to June 8, 2024, per the club. They close at Seattle Reign FC on Nov. 1, a match Denver Summit FC will be watching closely, since the Summit need an Orlando win there to have a shot at the final playoff spot. These sides drew 0-0 in New Jersey in March.
It was also a farewell of sorts. Rafaelle, who came off in the 83rd minute, said she is retiring from the league and plans to stick around Orlando. "I'm just glad to end my career here in this league," she said.
Closing Take
Orlando threw everything it had at Berger, and Berger treated it like a training drill. Some goalkeepers make saves. Berger made a statement, and San Diego surely heard it: with one week left, the Shield is Gotham's to lose.
