Alba Caño's Rocket Earns Boston Legacy a 2-2 Draw at the San Diego Wave

San Diego Wave FC spent 19 minutes of Sunday's second half with the lead, the crowd buzzing and a sixth straight win within reach. Then Alba Caño took a touch outside the box, spun, and made San Diego's NWSL Shield math a whole lot uglier.

Caño's 73rd-minute strike into the top right corner earned Boston Legacy FC a 2-2 draw at Snapdragon Stadium, ending San Diego's five-match winning streak in front of 15,701 fans. Annie Karich opened the scoring in the 48th minute, Gia Corley answered three minutes later, and a Laís Araújo own goal put the Wave in front in the 54th before Caño had the final word. Nobody won. Only one of these teams is chasing a trophy, and it was not the one leaving happier.

Ivory Holds the Line

The first half was a San Diego possession clinic without the punchline. The Wave finished with 58.8 percent of the ball and 542 passes to Boston's 373, and most of that tilt showed up early. Laurel Ivory saved a Melanie Barcenas shot from distance in the ninth minute and stopped Lia Godfrey's effort from the middle of the box four minutes later.

San Diego thought the dam had finally broken in the 35th minute, when Godfrey turned in a rebound. VAR caught her offside, and the goal came off the board. Boston had its moments too: Bárbara Olivieri headed a Bianca St-Georges cross straight at Sandra Paños in the 41st minute, and Caño forced Paños into a save deep in first-half stoppage time. Scoreless at the break, and the Legacy had done exactly what visitors to a title contender are supposed to do.

Three Goals, Six Minutes

Boston made two changes at halftime, one of them Aleigh Gambone, and the second half detonated almost immediately. Off a corner sequence in the 48th minute, Paños stopped Aïssata Traoré from point-blank range, and Karich pounced on the loose ball to bury it. Per the club, it was her first NWSL goal, which is a pretty good place to start.

San Diego needed all of three minutes to respond. Barcenas cut inside from the right on a fast break and found Corley on the left side of the box, and Corley's left-footed shot went across Ivory and in off the inside of the post. Then, in the 54th minute, Barcenas started another move, Mimi Van Zanten played Kenza Dali into space on the right, and Dali's ball across the face of goal ended up in the Boston net off Araújo. From 0-1 to 2-1 in six minutes. Snapdragon went from anxious to giddy in the time it takes to order a beer.

Barcenas Drove It, Caño Finished It

Barcenas was the most dangerous player on the field all game. She led all players with four shots, put two on target, assisted Corley's goal and kicked off the move that produced the own goal. When San Diego looked sharp, the ball was usually at her feet.

Corley's goal was her fourth of the season, and the club says all five of her goal contributions have come in her last six matches. Unfortunately for San Diego, she was forced off with an injury in the 68th minute, replaced by Ludmila, with Laurina Fazer coming on for Godfrey at the same time.

On the other side, Caño was ruthless with her chances: two shots, two on target, one golazo. Boston's club recap counts it as her fifth NWSL goal this season. Gambone deserves a bow too, since the halftime substitute supplied the pass for the equalizer. And Ivory made three saves while organizing a back line that cleared 17 balls and made 14 interceptions.

The Turning Point

The 73rd minute flipped the story. Gambone found Caño with space outside the area, and Caño spun and rocketed a right-footed shot into the top right corner. Paños had no chance. It came five minutes after Corley's exit, and it left San Diego chasing for the rest of the match.

The Wave still had looks. Barbara Bonansea headed narrowly wide in the 86th minute, Ludmila sent a header over two minutes later, and Trinity Byars missed just over the bar from very close range in the first minute of stoppage time. Dali and Ivory were both booked in the third minute of a seven-minute stoppage period, and Boston's late attempts from Ella Stevens and Nichelle Prince flew high. In the end, nobody found a winner.

Stats That Matter

  • Possession: San Diego 58.8 percent, Boston 41.2.
  • Shots on goal: Boston 5, San Diego 4, even though the Wave led total shots 13-11.
  • Saves: Three apiece for Paños and Ivory.
  • Defensive grind: Boston logged 17 clearances and 14 interceptions to San Diego's 10 and 8.
  • Fouls: Boston committed 13, San Diego just 6.

What It Means

San Diego sits at 17-4-8 with 55 points, three behind Gotham FC's 58 after Gotham won at Orlando earlier Sunday. The Wave close the regular season at Bay FC on Nov. 1, Decision Day, with the Shield still on the line, per the club. The good news: the club says its 43 goals set a new club record for a regular season, with a match still to play. The bad news: San Diego is now 2-8-1 this season when conceding first, and this was its first draw at Snapdragon Stadium since Aug. 9, 2025, according to the Wave.

Boston moves to 9-6-14 with 33 points and is unbeaten in three straight after wins at Portland and at home against Louisville. In April, San Diego won 1-0 at Gillette Stadium; this time the Legacy took a point back. They finish their inaugural season at Angel City FC on Nov. 1.

Closing Take

Every great title race needs a party crasher, and Boston showed up to Snapdragon like the friend who was not on the guest list but somehow ends up running the aux cord. San Diego can still dream about the Shield, but the math just got a lot harder, and that is all down to one swing of Alba Caño's right foot.
