Lightning vs. Golden Knights: Nikita Kucherov Ties Steven Stamkos' Franchise Points Record in 6-2 Rout
Nikita Kucherov had a goal and two assists to tie Steven Stamkos' Lightning record of 1,137 points, and Anthony Cirelli scored twice as Tampa Bay routed Vegas 6-2.

Nikita Kucherov saw Jeremy Lauzon handling the puck at the blue line, poked it loose and suddenly had nothing between himself and Carter Hart but open ice. The breakaway finish 5:16 into the third period made it 6-2, and it was the 1,137th point of his Tampa Bay career. That ties Steven Stamkos for the most in franchise history.
The Tampa Bay Lightning hammered the Vegas Golden Knights 6-2 on Tuesday night at T-Mobile Arena. Kucherov had a goal and two assists, Anthony Cirelli scored twice, and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 32 saves as the Lightning won for the seventh time in eight games and knocked Vegas off a three-game winning streak.
Two Teams, Zero Defense, Then One Team
The first period was a track meet. Brandon Hagel opened the scoring on a power play at 4:11, redirecting a point shot from Charle-Edouard D'Astous, with Kucherov getting the second assist. Vegas answered at 13:16 when D'Astous broke his stick trying to clear the zone, Vasilevskiy stopped Mitch Marner's point-blank look and Ivan Barbashev knocked in the rebound for his first goal of the season.
Less than a minute later, John Carlson caught the Golden Knights in the middle of a line change, had his first shot stopped by Hart, collected his own rebound below the right circle and buried it into an open net. Then Vegas punched back short-handed. With Brayden McNabb in the box, Braeden Bowman picked off a Vasilevskiy pass up the boards and slid it across to a wide-open Mark Stone in the left circle at 18:30. Two goals apiece after 20 minutes.
The second period is where Tampa Bay turned a coin flip into a blowout. At 6:44, Kucherov chased down a rebound below the goal line and fed Cirelli in front for a one-timer. At 10:09, Jack Eichel gave the puck right to Cirelli, who scored from the edge of the left circle. At 17:56, Victor Hedman threw a shot from along the left boards that somehow found its way past Hart. Per the AP, Tampa Bay's first five goals came on just 14 shots.
Kucherov's breakaway in the third was the exclamation point. Vegas went 0-for-4 on the power play, including a third-period chance after Emil Lilleberg was called for cross-checking Brett Howden.
Kucherov Catches Stamkos
Per NHL.com, Kucherov now has 1,137 points (405 goals, 732 assists) in 888 games with Tampa Bay. Stamkos, who now plays for the Nashville Predators, reached the same total (555 goals, 582 assists) in 1,082 games with the Lightning. Different routes, same summit.
The AP added a wild nugget: Kucherov has a point in all 15 games he has played against Vegas. Among players who have scored in every game against an opponent, only Mario Lemieux (26 games against Calgary) and Tomas Sandstrom (17 games against Tampa Bay) rank ahead of him.
His coach was not interested in understatement. "That's what he does. He's a special talent," Jon Cooper said. "Guys like him don't come around. He's given our fans a decade of awesome."
Hedman, who has watched the whole run up close, focused on the work behind it. "His work ethic, his dedication to the game, and his dedication to the bench has always been there," he said. "You just got to try and get open windows out there and give him the puck as best as you can."
Cirelli scored twice in just 10:30 of ice time and did not play in the third period. Per NHL.com, his last shift ended with 1:09 left in the second, and Cooper did not provide an update afterward. Vasilevskiy stopped 32 of 34 shots for a .941 save percentage, the quiet backbone of a night when Vegas piled up 34 shots.
Hart had a rough one: 15 saves on 21 shots, a .714 save percentage. Stone scored for the third straight game, and NHL.com noted he has eight points (five goals, three assists) during a four-game point streak. Marner extended his point streak to seven games with the assist on Barbashev's goal.
Turning Point: Cirelli's Quick Double
At 2-2, Vegas had its chances. Stone said as much afterward, pointing to "some 2-on-1s on the 4-on-4" early in the second. Instead, Cirelli scored twice in less than four minutes, and after the second one the Golden Knights never got within two again.
"There were chances in the game where we could have got the momentum back, for sure," Stone said, before adding that "you turn the puck over against those top guys and they make you pay."
Vegas coach Ryan Craig saw a team out of sync. "I thought we were a little bit out of our rhythm, a little bit out of our execution that we maybe had been in for the last nine games," he said.
Stats That Matter
- 5 on 14: Tampa Bay's first five goals came on its first 14 shots, per the AP.
- 34-21: Vegas outshot Tampa Bay and still lost by four.
- 1,137: Kucherov's franchise points total, level with Stamkos.
- 0-for-4: Vegas on the power play. Its only special-teams goal came short-handed.
- 33-25: Tampa Bay's edge in faceoffs.
What It Means
Tampa Bay is 7-2-0 with 14 points and has won three straight. Per the AP, it is the franchise's best start since opening 7-1-1 in 2020-21, the season the Lightning repeated as Stanley Cup champions. Carlson summed up the formula. "We were opportunistic. Special teams were great, PK stood up in big moments," he said.
Vegas slips to 8-3-0 with 16 points. The Golden Knights had won seven of eight before Tuesday and are 5-2-0 at home. One bright note: Howden, drafted 27th overall by the Lightning in 2016, played his 500th career game and his 322nd for Vegas, per the AP. The Golden Knights head to St. Louis on Thursday.
A Decade of Awesome
Cooper's line is the one that sticks. Kucherov is the rare star who can make a 6-2 road rout feel routine, and he did it on a night when Vegas had more shots, more hits and a three-game winning streak coming in.
Now he sits beside Stamkos at the top of the Lightning record book, two co-headliners sharing one marquee. The next point turns it into a solo act, and his first shot at it comes Friday in Colorado.
