Lions vs. Vikings Week 8: Jahmyr Gibbs' 153 Yards and a Late Jared Goff Strike Hand Minnesota Its First Loss, 19-15
Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 153 yards and Jared Goff hit Jameson Williams for the go-ahead score with 4:35 left as the Lions beat the Vikings 19-15, ending Minnesota's unbeaten start on an emotional day at Ford Field.

Brian Flores built the most blitz-happy defense in football to make quarterbacks miserable. On Sunday it lost to a running back. Detroit ran the ball on 13 of its final 15 plays, Jahmyr Gibbs bounced off tackle after tackle for 153 yards, and the NFL's last perfect record ended under a pile of handoffs at Ford Field.
The Detroit Lions beat the Minnesota Vikings 19-15, with Jared Goff finding Jameson Williams for a 7-yard touchdown with 4:35 left and the defense closing it out from there. Detroit is 5-2 and has won three straight. Minnesota arrived 6-0 on an 11-game winning streak that dated to last December and leaves 6-1, losing for the first time in 329 days, per the Vikings' website.
The scoreboard was only part of the story. Lions linebacker Jack Campbell was carted off on a backboard early in the fourth quarter, and the long, quiet stoppage that followed hung over everything after it.
Flags, a Reversal and a Half of Field Goals
Detroit spent the opening quarter getting in its own way. Amon-Ra St. Brown and Williams were flagged for taunting on the Lions' first two drives, and an apparent 24-yard touchdown catch by St. Brown was wiped away on review because he did not secure the ball through the ground. Minnesota's first possession had already reached the Detroit 38 before Will Reichard missed from 57, and Jake Bates eventually broke the scoreless tie with a 25-yard field goal late in the first quarter.
Minnesota answered right away. Kyler Murray capped a seven-play, 74-yard drive in the opening minute of the second quarter with a 1-yard touchdown to Justin Jefferson, who pulled it in with his left hand on the left side of the end zone. Not long after, Goff's season-long streak of clean passes finally ended. Williams slipped, cornerback James Pierre picked off the throw, and Goff's first interception of the season arrived after 231 clean attempts.
The Lions' defense evened the ledger before the break. With 1:51 left in the half, D.J. Reed dove in front of Jordan Addison and intercepted Murray at the Detroit 38. Detroit then converted a fourth-and-1 from its own 47, Gibbs broke a 19-yard run in the closing seconds, and Bates hit from 37 to make it 7-6 Minnesota at halftime.
Gibbs Takes Over, Then Ford Field Goes Quiet
Bates opened the second half by clanging a 46-yard try off the left upright. Gibbs had other ideas. "We said we need to get the run game going, and that's what we did," Gibbs said, per Fox Sports. His 30-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, a tackle-breaking slalom and his longest run of the season, put Detroit ahead 12-7. The two-point try failed, and Gibbs admitted he was running on empty by then. "I'm not gonna lie, I was so tired. I wasn't expecting us going for two," he said.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, with 14:48 left, Campbell stayed down after helping tackle T.J. Hockenson on a short completion. Players from both teams took a knee while medical staff worked on him, and his teammates gathered around the cart before it pulled away. The Lions said he was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated for a neck injury, and Dan Campbell told the team's sideline radio reporter that Jack Campbell was breathing and alert when he left the field. Sunday evening, the team said Campbell was resting and would remain in the hospital overnight for continued evaluation and monitoring. There is no diagnosis yet. Our full report on Campbell's injury has the details.
The Turning Point: Detroit's Answer
When play resumed, Minnesota was already in Detroit territory, and the drive died on fourth-and-5 from the Detroit 25, where Reed knocked away Murray's pass for Addison. It barely slowed the Vikings. After a Detroit three-and-out, Murray led a seven-play, 84-yard drive, keyed by a 51-yard strike to Addison. Hockenson caught an 8-yard touchdown, Addison hauled in the two-point conversion, and the Vikings led 15-12 with 8:44 to play.
Detroit's response was blunt. Gibbs and Sione Vaki, who finished with 65 yards on 11 carries, shoved the Lions 69 yards in seven plays, and from the Minnesota 7, Goff found Williams in the back of the end zone. It was Goff's 29th consecutive game with a touchdown pass, per the Lions.
Minnesota had one more chance, and its coach chose caution. Facing fourth-and-5 at its own 33 with 3:01 left and all three timeouts, Kevin O'Connell sent out the punt team. Detroit took over at its own 17, picked up three first downs, and Minnesota never touched the ball again. It was a curious contrast with the fourth-and-5 the Vikings had gone for in Detroit territory only minutes earlier.
Stars, Strugglers and a Long Injury List
Goff finished 18 of 25 for 176 yards with the touchdown and the pick and was sacked four times, so Flores' pressure did land. It just never caught up with Gibbs. Detroit's 230 rushing yards were a season high, and the Vikings' website noted that was the most a Flores defense in Minnesota had allowed since Week 2 of 2023. Williams caught four passes for 70 yards, and St. Brown led the team with seven catches.
Detroit's defense was every bit as important. It held Minnesota to 266 total yards and 15 points, both season lows for an opponent, and sacked Murray three times. "We came together on defense and said we're going to do this for Jack," cornerback Roger McCreary said, per the Detroit Free Press. That unit finished the day without Campbell, Brian Branch and DJ Wonnum, who were ruled out after colliding late in the second quarter and were evaluated for concussions, and rookie linebacker Jimmy Rolder (hamstring). Reed also left with a hip injury suffered on his fourth-down breakup, and center Cade Mays exited with an ankle injury.
For Minnesota, Murray went 17 of 29 for 210 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, and his 35 rushing yards led a team that managed 81 on the ground. Jefferson caught five of nine targets for 33 yards. Hockenson had four catches for 58 yards and the touchdown. Safety Theo Jackson left with a quad injury. "That's not the formula," O'Connell said of his offense's execution, per the Vikings' website.
The Numbers Behind It
- 230 rushing yards for Detroit against a defense that entered as the stingiest scoring unit in the league.
- 10 touchdowns this season for Gibbs, who joins Barry Sanders as the only Lions with at least 10 touchdowns in four straight seasons, per the team.
- 3 of 10 on third down for Minnesota.
- 266 total yards for the Vikings, the fewest Detroit has allowed this season.
- 11 straight wins for Minnesota, dating to December 2025, snapped.
What It Means
Our preview picked the blitz to win ugly, 20-17 Minnesota. It was ugly, all right, just in Detroit's favor. A week after Bates' walk-off kick beat Green Bay, the Lions are 2-0 in the NFC North, tied with Chicago for second and one game behind the Vikings, per the Free Press. They visit Miami on Nov. 8. Minnesota still leads the division and hosts Buffalo on Monday, Nov. 9.
The win came with a weight attached. Dan Campbell said the team "can't really give any answers quite yet, so it's a little bittersweet." Aidan Hutchinson put the win in simpler terms, nodding to Campbell's jersey number. "It was for 4-6, man," Hutchinson said. On a day Detroit beat the best team in its division, that was the line that stuck.
