Lions LB Jack Campbell Taken to Hospital for Apparent Neck Injury After Being Carted Off vs. Vikings
Lions linebacker Jack Campbell was carted off on a backboard against the Vikings and taken to a local hospital to be evaluated for a neck injury, the team said.

Ford Field went quiet on Sunday afternoon, and it stayed that way for a long time.
Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell was immobilized on a backboard and carted off the field early in the fourth quarter of Detroit's Week 8 game against the Minnesota Vikings after he stayed down following a tackle. Medical staff worked on him for about 10 minutes before he was taken off, according to the Detroit Free Press. The Lions then said he was being taken to a local hospital to be evaluated for a neck injury.
What happened
The Lions led 12-7 with 14:48 left in the game when Kyler Murray found tight end T.J. Hockenson on a short throw. Campbell helped bring Hockenson down after a 10-yard gain, per ProFootball Talk, and the Free Press noted that the replay seemed to show him getting bent backward on the tackle. He did not get up.
The response was immediate. "LB Jack Campbell is down on the field in a pretty scary situation. Cart immediately came out for him," DetroitLions.com senior writer Tim Twentyman posted, adding that medical personnel were putting him on a stretcher. Detroit's athletic training staff surrounded him while he was stabilized and strapped to the backboard.
Both sidelines took a knee
Players from both teams knelt on the field while Campbell was treated, and the crowd fell silent. Before the cart pulled away, his teammates came to him. "Jack Campbell has been moved onto a cart and the entire Lions team is headed over to surround him before he leaves," ESPN's Kevin Seifert wrote. Aidan Hutchinson was among the Lions who were visibly emotional on the Fox broadcast, ProFootball Talk reported.
The game resumed after the long stoppage. Minnesota got a stop and then drove for a touchdown and a two-point conversion to take a 15-12 lead with 8:44 to play, per the Free Press, which also reported that members of the Lions defense were seen standing in prayer on the sideline.
The latest on Campbell
Lions PR said Campbell was being transported to a local hospital to be evaluated for a neck injury, Sports Illustrated's Lions On SI reported, and ESPN also reported that he was sent to a hospital for evaluation. Beyond that, the team has not shared anything about his condition, and we are not going to guess at the severity. This story will be updated as more is known.
Campbell, Detroit's first-round pick out of Iowa in 2023, has been a fixture in the middle of the Lions' defense. Sunday was supposed to be about whether Detroit could hand unbeaten Minnesota its first loss. For a few long minutes at Ford Field, nobody on either sideline was thinking about that, and neither are we.
