Eagles vs. Commanders Week 8 Preview: Tanner McKee, Jayden Daniels and a Sunday Night Cellar Fight
The 2-5 Eagles and 1-4-1 Commanders meet on Sunday Night Football at 8:20 p.m. ET at Northwest Stadium, and the loser lands in last place in the NFC East.

Sunday Night Football usually saves its spotlight for contenders. This week it gets a survival match. The Eagles have lost five straight, the Commanders have not won since September, and whoever loses in Landover drops into last place in the NFC East with the Nov. 10 trade deadline closing in.
Kickoff is Sunday at 8:20 p.m. ET at Northwest Stadium on NBC. Philadelphia (2-5) rolls in with Tanner McKee making his third start in place of Jalen Hurts, who the AP reports is likely out for the rest of the season. Washington (1-4-1) is fresh off its bye and, judging by Dan Quinn's mood this week, itching to play. "We can't wait to get rocking," Quinn said.
Last Place Is on the Line
The Giants lead the division at 4-2-1, Dallas sits at 3-4, and these two are stacked underneath. The Eagles' skid is their longest since 2016, per the AP, and a loss would drop them four games under .500 with the Giants visiting Philadelphia next week. Nick Sirianni spent the week preaching identity over panic. "There's no shortcut to this thing," Sirianni said, before leaning on the team's "tough, detailed and together" mantra.
Washington believes it is closer than 1-4-1 suggests. Its six-point loss to the 49ers, its two-point loss to these Eagles in Week 1 and an overtime tie with the Giants all could have flipped. "It's two angry teams willing to fight to the last snap," Quinn said this week. The Commanders also have a primetime hangover to shake. Washington lost all five of its games with kickoffs after 8 p.m. ET last season and has not won a regular-season primetime game since Dec. 29, 2024, per the AP.
Washington's Ground Game vs. a Leaky Eagles Run Defense
The AP's matchup to watch is the Commanders' rushing attack against an Eagles run defense that ranks 21st in the league. Dallas just ran for 204 yards on Philadelphia, with Javonte Williams going for 155, and no opponent during this five-game slide has finished with fewer than 375 yards against Philly. Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis still anchor the middle, but the results have not matched the names.
The twist: Washington is doing this without leading rusher Jacory Croskey-Merritt and top receiver Terry McLaurin, both on injured reserve, per the team's website. That makes Jayden Daniels the run game. Even after sitting out two and a half games with an elbow injury, he has run for 213 yards on just 25 carries, and that 8.5-yard average leads the NFL, per the AP. Per the Eagles' website, the Commanders average 125.2 rushing yards per game.
On the other side, McKee has to solve a defense that blitzes 43.9 percent of the time, the second-highest rate in the league, per the Eagles' website. In two starts he has completed 61.3 percent of his passes for 426 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Washington has turned it over just twice all season, while Philadelphia has only three takeaways, tied for 30th. If the Eagles cannot steal extra possessions, McKee has to be sharp. One stat in Philly's favor: Washington has given up touchdowns on 81.8 percent of opponents' red-zone trips, the worst rate in the league, and the Eagles have turned 14 of their 19 red-zone visits into touchdowns, per the Eagles' website.
Who to Watch Under the Lights
- Jayden Daniels, Commanders QB: 75 of 116 for 759 yards and five touchdowns. He threw for 300 yards and two scores in the loss at San Francisco, and per the Eagles' website he is 22-0 when Washington allows 22 or fewer points.
- Saquon Barkley, Eagles RB: 244 yards and a touchdown on 43 carries. He ran for 62 yards on seven carries against Dallas while dealing with hamstring and back injuries, practiced on a limited basis Friday and is set to play. "I don't want to look back and be like, I could have given it a chance and I didn't," Barkley said Friday, per the team's website.
- Antonio Williams, Commanders WR: The rookie had four catches for 64 yards and a touchdown against Philadelphia in Week 1, and the AP expects his role to grow without McLaurin.
- Zack Baun, Eagles LB: A team-high 51 tackles. He made 12 stops in the Week 1 win over Washington.
The Injury Picture
Per the team injury report, the Eagles have ruled out linebacker Jihaad Campbell (hamstring), wide receivers Britain Covey (knee), Dontayvion Wicks (ankle) and DeVonta Smith (hamstring), and cornerback Jonathan Jones (hamstring). The Eagles' website says no Philadelphia players are listed as questionable. Losing Smith hurts most, since he leads the team with 26 catches for 310 yards.
For Washington, defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw (knee) is out, and tight end John Bates (shoulder) and wide receiver Treylon Burks (foot) are questionable. Defensive tackle Daron Payne (foot) carries conflicting labels: the Commanders listed him as questionable after adding him to Friday's report, while ESPN's injury feed shows him out. Defensive tackle Jer'Zhan Newton (pectoral) remains on injured reserve but is in his practice window, and the team listed him as questionable.
Numbers for the Nightcap
- DraftKings lists Washington as a 6-point favorite with a total of 40.5, via ESPN, as of Saturday.
- ESPN's matchup predictor gives the Commanders a 65.2 percent chance to win.
- The Eagles are 1-6 against the spread this season, while the Commanders are 3-3, per the AP.
- Philadelphia is 9-5 against Washington in 14 meetings this decade, including the NFC Championship Game in January 2025.
- The Commanders lead the all-time series 91-88-5.
Our Call
Our pick: Commanders 23, Eagles 16. Washington is rested, has its starting quarterback and gets a run defense that just got steamrolled. Philadelphia's red-zone offense gives it a puncher's chance, and a healthy-ish Barkley changes the math. But McKee against a blitz-happy defense without DeVonta Smith is a tough ask, and Washington's ball security means the Eagles probably have to earn every point the long way. Daniels does enough with his legs to send Philly to the cellar.
