49ers vs. Commanders: Brock Purdy Makes History and Malik Mustapha Saves the 6-0 Start in Week 6

Brock Purdy became the NFL's highest-rated career passer, and Malik Mustapha's fourth-down breakup preserved a 23-17 win as the 49ers held off the Commanders to reach 6-0.

Fourth-and-3 at the San Francisco 17. One minute and 54 seconds left. A 20-point 49ers lead had melted to six, Jayden Daniels was hunting Treylon Burks toward the pylon, and Levi's Stadium was doing that nervous Monday night shuffle. Then Malik Mustapha arrived like a man late for a flight and swatted the ball away.

That stop sealed a 23-17 San Francisco win over the Washington Commanders, and the 49ers are 6-0. According to the AP, it is their best start since they won their first eight games in 2019 on the way to a Super Bowl appearance. Washington fell to 1-4-1.

Two Halves, Two Completely Different Movies

The first half was a Brock Purdy clinic. Three snaps in, he found Mike Evans for 24 yards, then capped the opening march with an 11-yard touchdown to George Kittle. Drew Stevens answered with a 51-yard field goal, then Evans got loose for 54 yards and Christian McCaffrey plunged in from a yard out. Eddy Pineiro pushed the extra point wide right, so it was 13-3.

The Commanders' lone real first-half threat fizzled at the 13, where Daniels had to throw away a fourth-and-2 snap. McCaffrey fumbled at the end of a 12-yard catch and Frankie Luvu recovered, but San Francisco shrugged and built a 14-play, 69-yard drive that chewed 6:13 and ended with McCaffrey's second 1-yard score with 13 seconds left. It was 20-3, and it felt like 40-3.

Then somebody switched the channel. Pineiro's 33-yarder made it 23-3 with 5:56 left in the third, and that was the last time the Niners scored. Daniels drove Washington 65 yards and found Stefon Diggs for a 1-yard touchdown with 15 seconds left in the quarter, then went 80 yards and hit Rachaad White from 9 yards out with 9:22 to play. Suddenly it was 23-17, and the Bay Area remembered what anxiety feels like.

The Face Mask, the Fourth Down and the Final Sack

Washington's next drive is the one Dan Quinn will be replaying all week. Jeremy McNichols broke a 31-yard touchdown run that would have pulled the Commanders even, and a Washington face-mask penalty erased it. The drive kept going anyway, down to the San Francisco 17, where Mustapha stuffed McNichols for no gain on third down and then broke up the fourth-down throw to Burks.

"I'm just reading the stem of the receiver, and then he broke out, and I was just trying to race to the pylon," Mustapha said.

Washington still got one more crack. A fair-catch interference flag gave the Commanders the ball at their own 46 with 52 seconds left, and Daniels moved them to the 28. An intentional grounding call, with a 10-second runoff, shoved them back to the 40 for one final snap, and Keion White and Romello Height split a sack as time expired.

"We dug ourselves in a hole, and it bit us at the end of it," Daniels said. "We have to be a four-quarter team, not just a half team."

Purdy Makes History, McCaffrey Does McCaffrey Things

Purdy finished 21 of 29 for 264 yards, a touchdown, no interceptions and a 111.9 passer rating. The bigger number came in the fine print: he crossed the 1,500-attempt threshold, which officially makes his 105.6 career rating the best in NFL history, ahead of Lamar Jackson's 102.7, per the AP. Not bad for a guy who still talks like he got a C on a group project.

"I'm obviously a little upset with how I finish the game," Purdy said.

McCaffrey did the dirty work: 16 carries for 64 yards and two touchdowns, plus nine catches for 53 yards, good for 117 yards from scrimmage. The fumble was a blemish, but the goal-line reps were vintage. Kittle caught five passes for 69 yards and the opening score, including a 35-yarder that set up the third-quarter field goal. Evans piled up 94 yards on three catches before leaving late in the first half, and coach Kyle Shanahan said the issue is not believed to be long term, per the AP.

On defense, rookie linebacker Jaden Dugger led the team with 11 tackles, Fred Warner reached 1,000 career tackles, per the team, and the pass rush got home four times for 39 yards in losses.

Daniels deserved better. He went 29 of 40 for 300 yards and two touchdowns without a pick, and Chig Okonkwo was a reliable outlet with seven catches for 69 yards. Washington also lost Terry McLaurin, who left in the first quarter with a left knee injury and was carted off. Quinn said the team fears it is significant, according to the AP.

The Numbers That Explain the Split

  • 303-90: San Francisco's yardage edge in the first half.
  • 17: First downs for the 49ers before halftime, the same number of plays Washington ran.
  • 3 and 72: The 49ers' first downs and yards after halftime, per the AP.
  • 105.6: Purdy's career passer rating, now the best in league history.
  • 56: Monday night wins for the 49ers, breaking a tie with Pittsburgh for the most in NFL history, per 49ers.com.

Perfect, but Not Polished

The Niners followed an emotional 32-29 win in Seattle with this one, and the second half got sloppy. Still, 6-0 is 6-0, and they head to Atlanta on Sunday. Shanahan was honest about the mess and happy with the finish.

"I was really proud of the defense for finding a way to overcome," Shanahan said.

There was a little extra spice, too. Shanahan spent two years as Quinn's offensive coordinator in Atlanta, a run that included the 28-3 Super Bowl collapse against New England. The AP notes this was their second meeting as head coaches since then, with Quinn winning the first in 2019. Call it even.

For Washington, it is another gut punch after last week's 27-27 tie with the Giants, a game in which the AP says the Commanders mismanaged the clock in overtime. They are 0-3 on the road, and a bye comes before Philadelphia visits on Nov. 1.

"I'm sick about the ending, but we showed a lot of fight," Quinn said.

Built Like a Missile

Kittle summed up Mustapha better than any film breakdown could.

"Built like a missile and hits like one," Kittle said.

Washington can confirm. Undefeated seasons need a few lucky bounces and a few guys who refuse to let a lead die quietly. San Francisco, for six weeks running, has had both.
