Falcons Stun 49ers in Week 7: Michael Penix Jr.'s 3 TDs and 4 Takeaways End San Francisco's Perfect Start
Michael Penix Jr. threw three touchdown passes and the Falcons forced four turnovers, two by rookie Kendal Daniels, to beat the 49ers 29-20 and hand San Francisco its first loss.

One week ago, Kendal Daniels was carted off the field in Atlanta with a neck injury. On Sunday, the rookie linebacker wore the green dot, jumped a Brock Purdy pass with 2:34 left, returned it 29 yards and then fell on George Kittle's fumble in the final minute for good measure. Comeback stories don't come much cleaner.
The Atlanta Falcons beat the San Francisco 49ers 29-20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, handing the previously unbeaten 49ers their first loss of the season. Michael Penix Jr. threw three touchdown passes, the defense won the turnover battle 4-0, and the 49ers fell to 6-1 while Atlanta climbed to 3-4.
How the 49ers' Perfect Start Slipped Away
San Francisco opened like a team that had not lost in six weeks. Christian McCaffrey caught two passes for 40 yards on the opening drive, including a 24-yarder to the Atlanta 5, and finished it by leaping over the pile on fourth down from the 1. Rookie Zachariah Branch, one week after losing two fumbles against Chicago, answered with a 61-yard kickoff return that set up a Nick Folk field goal.
Then McCaffrey left with a thigh injury, and the 49ers barely blinked. Kaelon Black ripped off a 30-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter for a 14-3 lead. Atlanta responded with a 68-yard drive capped by Penix's 1-yard touchdown to a wide-open Nick Muse, the tight end's first career score, though Folk missed the extra point.
The game flipped in what coaches call the middle eight. Maason Smith forced a Black fumble at the Atlanta 29, Gervon Dexter Sr. recovered, and the Falcons ground out a 14-play drive that ended with Folk's 33-yarder as the half expired. Khalil Herbert, elevated from the practice squad a day earlier, took the second-half kickoff back 38 yards, and Penix capped a 59-yard march with a 5-yard touchdown to Kyle Pitts Sr. Just like that, a 14-9 deficit was a 19-14 lead.
Jessie Bates III then made the play of the afternoon, tapping both feet on the sideline for an interception at the Atlanta 10. The Falcons went 90 yards the other way, and Penix found Drake London for a 21-yard score early in the fourth. 26-14.
Star Performances: Penix, Bates and the Kid With the Green Dot
Penix was surgical: 25 of 34 for 213 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions and a 118.9 rating. After missing on his first throw, he completed 11 straight, per the Falcons. The 49ers never sacked him. Ten different Falcons caught a pass, which is either a great game plan or a group project where everyone actually did their part. Pitts also logged his 300th career reception, and the Falcons say he is the sixth-youngest tight end in NFL history to get there. Bijan Robinson did the grinding with 63 rushing yards on 20 carries and five catches for 59 more.
Bates delivered the interception and, in the final minute, punched the ball out of Kittle's arm. Kevin Stefanski praised the sideline grab's "toe-drag swag." Daniels, filling in as the defensive signal-caller with Divine Deablo out, finished with 11 tackles to go with his two takeaways. "I wasn't scared," he said of his mindset heading into the game.
For San Francisco, Kittle caught eight passes for 88 yards, McCaffrey added six catches for 61 yards, and Purdy threw for 288 yards. The 49ers piled up 400 yards to Atlanta's 295 and still lost by nine, because yardage doesn't count when you keep handing the ball back.
The Turning Point: A Review, a Sack and a Shanked Punt
Down 26-14 early in the fourth, the 49ers thought Purdy had hit Jordan Watkins for a 23-yard touchdown. A lengthy review took it away, and on fourth down Za'Darius Smith sacked Purdy. San Francisco did score on its next drive, Purdy flipping a 1-yard touchdown to fullback Kyle Juszczyk with 5:05 left, but Eddy Pineiro pushed the extra point wide left, his fourth missed PAT of the season.
Then Jake Bailey shanked a punt, and the 49ers took over at their own 47 with a real shot to win it. Three plays later, Daniels picked off Purdy, and Folk turned it into a 31-yard field goal and a nine-point lead with 1:56 left. The Kittle fumble on the final drive was just the exclamation point.
"Any time you have four turnovers like that and you get zero, it's real tough to win," Kyle Shanahan said. "Too sloppy to win."
Stats That Matter
- 4-0: Turnover margin. According to the AP, the 49ers had only six turnovers in their first six games.
- 13: Points Atlanta scored off those takeaways.
- 0: Sacks allowed by Atlanta's offensive line.
- 3 of 4: San Francisco on fourth down, a sign of how hard the shorthanded 49ers had to push.
- 2: Missed extra points in the game, one by each kicker.
What It Means for Both Teams
For Atlanta, this was a reset button. The Falcons had dropped home games to Baltimore and Chicago, and this was their first win of the season at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. They even did it with Penix working on silent counts at home because of vocal 49ers fans in the stands. "We came out here and showcased what we are capable of," defensive end Samson Ebukam said. Next up is a trip to Tampa Bay.
For San Francisco, the loss comes with context. The 49ers were coming off a Monday night game, starting receivers Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel were inactive, and Ricky Pearsall, De'Zhaun Stribling and Demarcus Robinson were also out. Watkins and Jacob Cowing became Purdy's top wideouts, and the quarterback liked what he saw: "I thought I saw a lot of really cool things." A bye week arrives at the right time before Las Vegas visits on Nov. 8. Asked whether McCaffrey was at full strength after halftime, Shanahan said, "I don't know. I'll ask him but it seemed all right."
Closing Take: Undefeated No More
Every perfect season eventually meets a team that refuses to give the ball back while happily taking yours. Atlanta was that team on Sunday, and Stefanski summed up the formula in a line worth framing in the film room: "That's a great recipe for winning in this league."
