Mercury vs. Storm: Kahleah Copper Scores 23 of Her 30 in the First Half as Phoenix Wins Third Straight
Kahleah Copper had 23 of her 30 by halftime and Lexi Held hit a career-high five 3s as Phoenix rolled past the Seattle Storm 90-67 for a third straight win.

Some scorers need a while to find their rhythm. Kahleah Copper needed one half to find 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting, and by then the Seattle Storm were down 19 and the rest of Thursday night at Mortgage Matchup Center was mostly paperwork.
Copper finished with 30, Valeriane Ayayi added 18, Lexi Held hit a career-high five 3s, and the Phoenix Mercury rolled to a 90-67 win for their third straight victory. Seattle's one piece of good news was Ezi Magbegor's season debut. Everything else went on the bill.
A 46-Second Warning Shot
The Storm hung around for roughly the first five minutes. Then Phoenix turned a 12-10 lead into 20-10 with eight points in 46 seconds, a burst so fast it barely registered as a run. By the end of the quarter it was 31-20, with the Mercury already looking like a team that knew precisely where every open look would come from. Phoenix assisted on 23 of its 33 field goals on the night, with Alyssa Thomas' nine leading the way, and Seattle spent a good part of the evening a step behind the ball.
Halftime came at 55-36, and the rest of the story should have been simple. Instead Seattle gave the 10,055 in attendance one honest push. Phoenix had it up to 68-42, its biggest lead of the night, when the Storm scored eight straight in 81 seconds and kept going, finishing the third on a 16-5 run to make it 73-58. Seattle won that quarter 22-18, and Copper did not score in it.
Her first points of the second half finally came with 8:39 left in the fourth, a bucket that made it 75-60 and more or less closed the window. Seattle scored nine points in the fourth and none after Jordan Horston's free throw with 3:50 left. Monique Akoa Makani's 25-footer at 1:26 was the last basket of the night.
Eighty-Nine Seconds in the Second
If you want one stretch that decided this, it was early in the second quarter. Phoenix led 33-24 with 7:30 left in the half, a hole Seattle could still have climbed out of. Over the next 89 seconds the Mercury scored 12 straight, and it was 45-24.
Seattle never got back within single digits, and it picked up two technical fouls along the way, which tells you how the evening felt from that bench. Its third-quarter run looks a lot less inspiring when you remember that it only cut a 26-point lead to 15, and the score at the break had already told the story. Copper was 9-of-12 by that point, Phoenix was getting whatever it wanted in transition, and the Storm were spending their energy on damage control.
Copper, Held and the Supporting Cast
Copper's night is really two nights stacked on top of each other. She was 9-of-12 in the first half and 3-of-9 in the second, finishing 12-of-21 overall with two 3s, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and a plus-20 in 36 minutes. When a player's cold half still gets her seven points and a win by 23, she has earned the right to coast.
Held was the sidekick of the night, going 5-of-6 from deep for 17 points with five boards and zero fouls. That's the career high in 3s, and it came on the kind of shooting night that makes defenses reconsider their life choices. Thomas flirted with a triple-double at nine points, 13 rebounds and nine assists, six of those boards offensive, and led the team with a plus-21. Ayayi scored 18 with three 3s and went 5-of-7 at the line. Marta Suarez gave Phoenix six points and three offensive rebounds in eight minutes off the bench. DeWanna Bonner struggled to six points on 3-of-10 shooting, including 0-for-5 from deep, but her eight rebounds and two blocks helped her finish plus-19 anyway.
Awa Fam and Natisha Hiedeman each scored 13 for Seattle, Fam on an efficient 6-of-8, though Hiedeman finished minus-29. Flau'jae Johnson and Jade Melbourne added 11 apiece, with Melbourne dishing five assists. Dominique Malonga, who had 37 against Dallas on June 22, went 2-of-11 for five points. Magbegor, who had missed the first 20 games with a foot injury, gave the Storm eight points in 17 minutes and made both of her 3s. Her plus-1 and Melbourne's plus-3 were the only positive marks on the Seattle side, which is a tidy summary of how much the rest of the rotation got hit.
Stats That Matter
- 40-29: Phoenix on the glass, with a 13-5 edge on the offensive end.
- 11-of-26: Phoenix from 3, or 42 percent, with Held supplying almost half of the makes.
- 16-7: The Mercury on the fast break. They also won the paint 40-28.
- 20-15: Phoenix's edge in points off turnovers, with Seattle giving it away 13 times.
- 9: Seattle's fourth-quarter points, which is hard to do on purpose.
What It Means
Phoenix is 8-13 and 3-6 at home, and the streak now includes a 111-109 win at Indiana, an 89-80 win at Toronto and this one. It's also Phoenix's third win over Seattle this season, following a 72-68 result on June 3 and a 93-73 rout on June 20. The Mercury were 5-13 after losing at Indiana on June 22, so this is what a team climbing out of a hole looks like. Chicago visits on Tuesday.
Seattle is 5-16 and 1-9 away from home. The Storm came in off home wins over New York and Atlanta, and that little bit of momentum did not survive the trip. Portland comes to Climate Pledge Arena on Saturday.
Not in Retrograde
Every time something goes wrong in your life, someone online blames Mercury being in retrograde. Seattle has a more specific complaint. This Mercury is moving forward just fine, three wins in a row and climbing, and the Storm know exactly who lit them up before halftime.
