Mercury vs. Tempo: Alyssa Thomas Dishes 12 Assists as Phoenix Routs Toronto 101-69
Alyssa Thomas handed out 12 assists, six Mercury players scored in double figures, and Phoenix led by as many as 47 in a 101-69 rout of the Toronto Tempo.

The Phoenix Mercury had spent a week getting pushed around. On Saturday night they finally got to do the pushing, and they did not stop until the lead reached 47.
Phoenix beat the Toronto Tempo 101-69 at Mortgage Matchup Center, snapping a four-game losing streak about as loudly as the WNBA allows. Alyssa Thomas ran the offense like she had the only remote in the house, handing out 12 assists in just 22 minutes. Noemie Brochant and Shay Ciezki scored 15 apiece, Sami Whitcomb hit four 3-pointers in 16 minutes, and six Mercury players finished in double figures. Toronto never led.
Isabelle Harrison gave the Tempo a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Kiki Rice added 14 points and five assists. But Toronto shot 37 percent, made 4 of 22 from 3-point range and gave the ball away 16 times. Against a Phoenix team that suddenly remembered how to run, that math was never going to work.
A Lead That Would Not Stop Growing
Toronto hung around for a few minutes. Then Phoenix ripped off eight straight points to turn a 4-2 game into a 12-2 lead, and the Mercury were up 27-17 after one quarter.
The second quarter is where the gap became a canyon. A Phoenix 8-0 burst stretched a 36-28 lead to 44-28, and the Mercury were just getting warmed up. With 1:04 left in the half and Phoenix up 50-35, the home team scored the last eight points before the break and the first four after it. That 12-0 run made it 62-35 less than two minutes into the third quarter, and the rest of the night was a formality.
Phoenix put up 58 points in the first half and 30 more in the third quarter, a stretch that included another 8-0 spurt and a 9-0 run that started in the final seconds of the period and spilled into the fourth. It was 88-49 after three. Toronto did win the fourth quarter 20-13 behind a late 13-0 run, the kind of stat that matters only to the people grading film.
Thomas Runs the Show, Everyone Eats
Thomas scored four points and still might have been the most important player on the floor. Twelve assists, six rebounds and a plus-38 in 22 minutes is the stat line of someone treating the game like a passing drill, and the rest of the roster cashed in. Phoenix finished with 27 assists on 37 made baskets, which is what happens when the ball keeps moving and the shots keep falling.
Brochant was the most complete scorer, going 5 of 8 from the field and 4 of 4 at the line for 15 points to go with four steals and a plus-36. Ciezki matched her 15 off the bench on 6-of-12 shooting, adding five rebounds, five assists and two blocks in 26 minutes. Whitcomb was pure flamethrower, hitting 4 of 6 from deep for 14 points in 16 minutes.
The depth kept coming. Marta Suarez scored 13 on 5-of-8 shooting, Maddy Westbeld added 12 and went 4 of 4 at the line, Lexi Held knocked down three 3-pointers for 11 points, and Kara Dunn chipped in nine with three triples of her own. Natasha Mack did the dirty work with eight points and eight rebounds. Phoenix's bench outscored Toronto's 49-21.
For Toronto, Harrison was the lone bright spot, grinding out her double-double on 5-of-15 shooting and going 6 of 7 at the line. Rice could get to her spots, making 6 of 11 shots, but she also had eight turnovers, and Phoenix turned that kind of night into easy points going the other way. Laura Juskaite scored 10, and Teonni Key added five points and eight rebounds off the bench.
The Turning Point: Twelve Straight Across the Break
The game was functionally over at halftime, but the 12-0 run that bridged the two halves is where Phoenix took the last bit of drama off the table. A 15-point lead with a minute left in the second quarter is something a team can talk itself into chasing. A 27-point lead early in the third is not. Toronto went the entire stretch without a point, and by the time it scored again, the Mercury had reset the scoreboard into rout territory.
Stats That Matter
- 28-5 in fast-break points: Phoenix ran every chance it got, and Toronto had no answer in transition.
- 24 points off turnovers: The Mercury scored 24 off Toronto's 16 giveaways, while the Tempo managed six points off Phoenix's mistakes.
- 15 of 34 vs. 4 of 22 from deep: Phoenix shot 44 percent from 3-point range. Toronto shot 18.
- 12 steals: Brochant had four and Held had three as the Mercury defense jumped passing lanes all night.
- Plus-38: Thomas posted the best plus-minus on the floor without needing to score more than four points.
What It Means
Phoenix improves to 14-26 (6-14 at home) and ends a four-game skid that included losses to Portland on Aug. 16, Atlanta on Aug. 22 and Washington twice this week, on Aug. 25 and Aug. 27. The Mercury also took the season series from Toronto 2-1. The Tempo won 98-90 in Phoenix in May, and the Mercury answered with an 89-80 win in Toronto in June before this one.
Toronto falls to 11-29 (4-16 on the road) and has lost four straight: at home to Las Vegas on Aug. 23, at Seattle on Aug. 26, at Las Vegas on Aug. 28 and now here. The Tempo's 82-79 win over Portland on Aug. 21 is their only victory in their last 14 games.
Both teams head into the FIBA World Cup break. Phoenix returns Sept. 17 at Portland, and Toronto hosts Indiana on Sept. 18.
The Fast and the Furious, Desert Edition
This one played like a late-franchise Fast & Furious movie: no subtlety, a ton of speed, and the outcome obvious long before the credits. After a week of losing close-ish games and big ones, the Mercury did not need a clever script. They needed to run, share the ball and remind themselves what a comfortable night feels like. Twenty-eight fast-break points and 27 assists later, they had exactly that.
