Mystics vs. Sky: Shakira Austin Breaks Washington's Single-Season Scoring Record in 110-80 Rout

Shakira Austin needed exactly one basket to make Washington Mystics history, and she got it out of the way before most of Wintrust Arena had settled into their seats. Her layup in the opening minute on Thursday night carried her past the franchise's single-season scoring record, a mark she had only tied heading into the FIBA World Cup break.

Everything after that was a statement. Washington shot 55 percent, piled up 54 points in the paint and flattened the Chicago Sky 110-80. Austin finished with 20 points and seven rebounds, Kiki Iriafen posted 18 points and 11 rebounds, and all five Mystics starters reached double figures in a game that was effectively over by the third quarter.

Washington Wakes Up Fast

Chicago held a slim lead early, but it did not last. Washington answered with an 11-0 burst in the middle of the first quarter, and the Sky's biggest lead of the entire night ended up being two points. The Mystics led 24-19 after one and 52-41 at halftime, winning both quarters while Chicago was still searching for a second scoring option behind its guards.

The third quarter is where it got lopsided. Washington dropped 32 points in the period to push the margin to 84-68, and a 10-0 run early in the fourth made it 94-71 with 7:39 left. From there it was a victory lap. The Mystics' lead peaked at 32, and the reserves even got in on the fun late: Darianna Littlepage-Buggs scored five straight points on a 3 and a layup, Rori Harmon assisted on both of those buckets plus an Angela Dugalic layup, and Washington cracked 110 with 41.1 seconds to go.

Chicago had moments. Courtney Vandersloot was efficient, and Sydney Taylor found a few looks from deep. But the Sky never strung together enough stops to make the Mystics sweat, and a 4-of-20 night from 3-point range left them with no way to keep pace.

Austin and Iriafen, the Frontcourt Problem

Austin went 8-of-15 from the field and 4-of-8 at the line for her 20, adding seven rebounds and three assists in 29 minutes with a game-best plus-30. According to the Mystics, she finished the night with 677 points this season, and she extended her franchise-record run of games with at least 10 points and five rebounds to 23 straight. The previous single-season scoring mark belonged to Sonia Citron, who set it in 2025.

Iriafen was even more efficient, making 8 of her 12 shots. The AP counted it as her 21st double-double of the season, and her four offensive rebounds gave her 115 for the year, a franchise single-season record. The team added that her streak of consecutive double-doubles, also a franchise record, has now reached seven games.

The supporting cast handled the rest. Amoore drilled 4 of 7 from deep for 12 points and dished five assists, Michaela Onyenwere scored 12, and Cotie McMahon went 5-for-7 for 11 with four assists and a plus-29. Off the bench, Lauren Betts had nine points and eight rebounds, Alicia Florez added eight with two steals, and the second unit combined for 37 points, a season high according to the team.

For Chicago, Vandersloot scored 14 on 5-of-8 shooting with five assists, Taylor had 12, and Kamilla Cardoso, Gabriela Jaquez and Rachel Banham each scored 10. Aicha Coulibaly gave Chicago nine points off the bench, five of them at the free-throw line. Cardoso fouled out after 23 minutes, which did not help a Chicago frontline that was already getting pushed around.

The Turning Point: The Possession Battle

This game was decided by who got more chances, and it was not close. Chicago turned it over 17 times, counting team turnovers, while Washington coughed it up only nine. The Mystics turned those Sky mistakes into 22 points and gave up just six the other way. Add a 40-27 edge on the boards, including nine offensive rebounds, and Washington took 75 shots to Chicago's 66.

When you are already shooting 55 percent, nine extra attempts is basically cheating. The paint numbers told the same story: 54-34, with Austin, Iriafen and Betts living around the rim. The ball movement was crisp, too, as Washington assisted on 27 of its 41 field goals, while Chicago managed 17 assists.

Stats That Matter

  • 54-34: Washington's advantage in points in the paint.
  • 22-6: Points off turnovers in the Mystics' favor.
  • 40-27: The rebounding margin. Per the team, it was the 38th time this season Washington has outrebounded an opponent, extending its own WNBA single-season record.
  • 4 of 20: Chicago's 3-point shooting, a 20 percent night.
  • 37: Bench points for Washington, a season high per the Mystics.

What It Means

The Mystics improved to 25-16, bouncing back from an 88-82 loss at Los Angeles in their last game before the break. Per the AP, Washington is tied with Dallas for sixth and sits a half-game in front of New York. Only the top four will have home court in the opening best-of-three round, and the postseason tips off Sept. 27. The team also noted that one more victory would tie the franchise mark for regular-season wins, the 26 posted by the 2019 club that won the WNBA title. Washington now leads the season series with Chicago 2-0.

The Sky slipped to 15-26 and have now lost four in a row, a skid that started right after a season-high three-game winning streak. Next up, Washington plays Sunday at Indiana, while Chicago visits Atlanta on Saturday.

Closing Take

There is something fitting about a record falling in the very first minute of the stretch run. Austin did not wait for a big moment; she made the opening minute the big moment, then spent the rest of the night reminding everyone why Washington's frontcourt is a matchup nightmare. It was the sequel that outperformed the original, and the Mystics look like a team that knows exactly what kind of movie it is making.
