Dierre Hill Jr., Oregon Score 38 Straight Points to Stun No. 11 Ohio State 41-28 in Columbus
Oregon erased a 14-0 deficit with 38 straight points, sparked by a fake punt and two Dierre Hill Jr. touchdown runs, to beat No. 11 Ohio State 41-28 at Ohio Stadium.

Oregon fell behind by two touchdowns in the first quarter, then scored 38 straight points behind a fake punt, a trick-play touchdown on the last snap of the first half and two Dierre Hill Jr. touchdown runs. Dylan Raiola threw two touchdown passes, and Oregon beat No. 11 Ohio State 41-28 on Saturday at Ohio Stadium in Columbus.
Oregon (6-3, 4-2 Big Ten) won in Columbus for the second time in its last two trips there, after a 35-28 win in 2021. Ohio State (6-3, 4-2 Big Ten) has now lost two straight games, both with true freshman Luke Fahey at quarterback in place of the injured Julian Sayin. Fahey threw for 360 yards and two touchdowns, but the Buckeyes went 0 for 4 on fourth down and did not score again until 3:25 remained in the game.
Both teams were playing without their starting quarterbacks. Oregon lost Dante Moore to a season-ending concussion in late September, and Raiola, a former Ohio State commit, has started since.
Bo Jackson's fast start
Ohio State looked in control early. The Buckeyes opened the game with an 11-play, 75-yard drive, and Bo Jackson finished it with a 16-yard touchdown run at 9:56 of the first quarter.
Oregon punted on its first two possessions, and Ohio State needed just four plays to cover 82 yards on its third drive. Jackson scored again from 8 yards out at 1:20, and the Buckeyes led 14-0 after one quarter.
Oregon's offense found some rhythm on the next drive. The Ducks went 60 yards in 12 plays, a drive that started in the first quarter and ended with a 33-yard Gage Hurych field goal at 11:26 of the second quarter to make it 14-3.
The fake punt
The game turned late in the first half. Oregon faced fourth-and-9 at its own 31 with under three minutes left and lined up to punt. Instead, edge rusher Teitum Tuioti took the direct snap and threw a 30-yard jump pass to fellow defender Matayo Uiagalelei to move the ball into Ohio State territory.
Raiola later found Hill for a 20-yard gain, and Hill ran 9 yards for a touchdown at 1:25. The 70-yard drive cut Ohio State's lead to 14-10.
Ohio State tried to answer before halftime. On the third play of the Buckeyes' next drive, Devin Jackson intercepted Fahey, getting a foot in bounds, and Oregon took over at its own 41 with 1:06 left.
Seventeen points in the second quarter
Oregon made the most of the extra possession. Raiola hit Brandon Smith for 31 yards to the Ohio State 29 with 31 seconds left, then found Evan Stewart for 19 yards to the 10. Two Ohio State holding penalties moved the ball to the 2.
On the final play of the half, tight end Jamari Johnson went in motion, took a direct snap and pushed through several defenders for a 2-yard touchdown. Hurych's extra point gave Oregon a 17-14 halftime lead, and the Ducks had turned a 14-point deficit into a three-point lead in less than three minutes of game clock.
Hill breaks it open
Oregon needed less than two minutes to extend the lead after halftime. Raiola completed a 13-yard pass to Jalen Lott, a roughing the passer penalty on Ohio State moved the ball to the Buckeyes' 45, and Hill broke a 48-yard touchdown run at 13:11 of the third quarter for a 24-14 lead.
Ohio State's next drive went backward. The Buckeyes lost 22 yards in three plays and punted on fourth-and-32 from their own 9. Hurych missed a field goal on the ensuing Oregon possession, but the Buckeyes could not take advantage.
Facing fourth-and-2 at their own 42, the Buckeyes threw incomplete and turned the ball over on downs at 8:16. Oregon went 42 yards in six plays, and Raiola threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Dakorien Moore at 6:37 for a 31-14 lead.
Fourth down after fourth down
Ohio State kept going for it, and Oregon kept stopping it. A 28-yard drive late in the third quarter ended when Fahey's fourth-and-2 pass for Jeremiah Smith at the Oregon 47 was broken up. Early in the fourth, Oregon sacked Fahey on fourth-and-8 at the Ohio State 26.
Three plays after that sack, Raiola threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Smith at 12:02, and Oregon led 38-14. The Ducks had scored 38 consecutive points.
Ohio State's next drive reached the Oregon 40, but a false start pushed the Buckeyes back to fourth-and-13, and another pass for Jeremiah Smith was broken up. The Buckeyes went 0 for 4 on fourth down, all four failures coming in the second half.
Tempers flared in the fourth quarter. Players from both teams got into a sideline scuffle, and offsetting unsportsmanlike conduct penalties were called.
Late Ohio State points
Ohio State finally scored again with an 80-yard drive. Fahey threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jeremiah Smith at 3:25 and ran in a two-point conversion to make it 38-22.
Oregon answered with a seven-play drive that ate 2:16, and Hurych made a 40-yard field goal at 1:08 for a 41-22 lead. Fahey hit Jeremiah Smith for 57 yards on the Buckeyes' last drive and threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Nate Roberts with 44 seconds left. The two-point try failed, and Oregon ran out the clock.
By the numbers
Ohio State outgained Oregon 413 to 395 and had 23 first downs to Oregon's 22, but the Ducks won the categories that decided the game. Oregon did not turn the ball over, converted 8 of 17 third downs and its only fourth-down try, and ran for 108 yards to Ohio State's 53. Ohio State committed seven penalties for 40 yards, and Oregon had five for 32. Time of possession was almost even, 30:01 for Oregon and 29:59 for Ohio State.
Raiola completed 25 of 40 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Hill ran 13 times for 75 yards and two touchdowns and caught four passes for 31 yards. Moore led Oregon with seven catches for 56 yards and a touchdown, Brandon Smith caught three for 52 and a score, and Stewart added four catches for 47 yards.
Oregon's defense was led by Devon Jackson and Dylan Williams with eight tackles each, and Devon Jackson had three tackles for loss. Ify Obidegwu made seven tackles, while Uiagalelei and Nasir Wyatt each had a sack. Hurych made two of three field goals and all five extra points, and punter Bailey Ettridge put four of five punts inside the 20.
Fahey completed 36 of 50 passes for 360 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Jeremiah Smith caught seven passes for 133 yards and a touchdown, though 57 of those yards came on the final drive. Devin McCuin caught nine passes for 84 yards, and Bo Jackson ran 11 times for 48 yards and two touchdowns while adding seven catches for 42 yards. Earl Little Jr. led the Buckeyes with 10 tackles.
What it means
Oregon has won two straight since a 21-10 loss at Illinois, following last week's 34-26 win over Northwestern. Coach Dan Lanning's team entered the week at No. 23 in the first College Football Playoff rankings and now has a road win over the No. 12 team in those rankings. The Ducks host Michigan at Autzen Stadium on Nov. 14, then play at Michigan State on Nov. 20 and close the regular season against Washington on Nov. 28.
Ohio State was No. 12 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings, and the loss gives the Buckeyes three defeats with three regular season games left. It follows a 30-18 loss at USC in Fahey's first career start. Coach Ryan Day's team hosts Northwestern on Nov. 14, plays at Nebraska on Nov. 21 and hosts Michigan on Nov. 28.
Ohio State still leads the all-time series 10-3, but Oregon has won two of the last three meetings.
