Illinois Stuns Oregon 21-10 With 21 Unanswered Points Behind Freshman QB
Aidan Laughery broke a 75-yard touchdown run, true freshman Michael Clayton II threw two scores in his first start and the Illinois defense blanked Oregon after halftime in Champaign.

For a half, this looked exactly like the game the oddsmakers expected. Oregon marched down the field on its opening drive, led 10-0 late in the second quarter, and held Illinois to 43 yards of offense. Then one handoff changed everything, and the Ducks never scored again.
Illinois beat Oregon 21-10 on Saturday afternoon at Gies Memorial Stadium in Champaign, scoring the final 21 points behind a true freshman quarterback making his first career start. The Illini, who were 10.5-point underdogs, moved to 4-3 and 2-2 in the Big Ten. Oregon, ranked No. 25 in the coaches poll, fell to 4-3 and 2-2 and lost a Big Ten road game for the first time since joining the league in 2024, ending a run of 10 straight conference road wins.
A quiet start for Illinois
Oregon looked sharp early. The Ducks drove for a touchdown on their opening possession, with Jordon Davison punching it in. Their defense then smothered the Illinois offense for most of the first half, and a 20-yard field goal with about two minutes left before halftime pushed the lead to 10-0.
Illinois had not done much of anything to that point. Michael Clayton II, starting in place of the injured Katin Houser, who broke his hand on Oct. 10 against Michigan State, was still settling in. The Illini had 43 total yards.
One play, 75 yards
It took Illinois exactly one snap to flip the game. With 2:15 left in the half, Aidan Laughery took a handoff and was gone, sprinting 75 yards for a touchdown that cut the deficit to 10-7.
That was not a fluke for Laughery. The run was the second-longest of his career, behind a 77-yarder earlier this season against Southern Illinois, and it made him the only running back in the country with two touchdown runs of 75 yards or more this season. He finished with 123 yards on just 13 carries.
Taking control after halftime
Illinois came out of the locker room and took the lead on its first possession. The drive covered 70 yards in nine plays and ended with Clayton faking a handoff and finding Christian Abney for a 9-yard touchdown. It was Abney's first touchdown as an Illini and the second of his career, and it put Illinois up 14-10.
Three drives later, Illinois put the game away in the fourth quarter. A six-play, 66-yard drive finished with Clayton throwing to the back corner of the end zone, where Collin Dixon laid out for a 23-yard diving touchdown catch. It was 21-10.
"I have no idea how Collin made that catch," Illinois coach Bret Bielema said.
The turning point was the defense
Laughery's run got Illinois back in the game, but the defense is the reason Oregon never got back in front. The Ducks did not run a single play in the red zone in the second half. They were shut out over the final 30 minutes. In fact, after that field goal late in the second quarter, Oregon did not put another point on the board for the rest of the afternoon.
Oregon did have chances. Kicker Gage Hurych missed two 52-yard field goal attempts and then a 39-yarder in the fourth quarter, any one of which would have made the finish tighter.

The Illini pass rush also got home. Ean Rhea forced a fumble on a sack, and Joe Barna recovered it. It was Rhea's second sack of the season and his first since the opener against UAB. Pat Farrell also forced a fumble on a sack, his first sack of the season and the third of his career, to go with five tackles.
Juice Clarke led the way with 10 tackles, seven of them solo, plus two pass breakups and a tackle for loss. It was the second double-digit tackle game of his career.
Oregon coach Dan Lanning did not dodge it. "Give credit to Illinois. They were the tougher team and that showed up in the second half," Lanning said.
The freshman
Clayton's stat line will not jump off the page: 11-of-18 passing for 84 yards and two touchdowns. He also shared second-half snaps with Carson Boyd. But the history attached to it is real.
Clayton became the sixth true freshman quarterback to start a game for Illinois and the first since M.J. Rivers II in 2018. He is just the third to win as a starter, joining Juice Williams in 2006 and Kurt Kittner in 1998. His four touchdown passes this season now rank second all-time among Illini true freshmen, behind only Williams' nine. The Big Ten named him its Freshman of the Week.
Who carried it
Laughery was the difference on the ground, and Dixon was the go-to target through the air with six catches for 65 yards and the touchdown. Dixon has now caught 10 touchdown passes this season, which ties the Illinois single-season record, according to WCIA. He also reached 50 receptions in seven games, the second-fewest games needed in program history.
For Oregon, Dylan Raiola completed 27 of 41 passes for 246 yards. Davison ran for 92 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, and Dierre Hill Jr. added 83 yards on 13 carries. Dakorien Moore caught nine passes for 70 yards.
The numbers that matter
21-0: The Illinois run to close the game, after trailing 10-0.
46 and 61: Illinois snapped Oregon's streak of 46 straight wins when scoring first, along with its streak of 61 straight games scoring more than 10 points.
Three: Oregon field goals missed, from 52, 52 and 39 yards.
1970: The last time Illinois had beaten Oregon before Saturday. The Illini are now 2-3 all-time against the Ducks, who won 38-9 in Eugene in 2024.
25-3: Illinois' record when it scores last in the first half and first in the second half, which is exactly what happened here.
Oregon was also short-handed. Dante Moore missed his third straight game with a concussion suffered Sept. 26 against USC, and the Ducks have scored 39 points total in those three games. Evan Stewart is suspended indefinitely after a DUI arrest, and Jalen Lott, Messiah Hampton and Jeremiah McClellan were out injured.

What it means
For Bielema, this one stacked up records. The win was his 41st at Illinois, the most by any Illini coach through six seasons, and his 25th in the Big Ten, fourth in program history behind Zuppke, Eliot and White. It was his ninth win over a ranked team, second in school history, and Illinois has now beaten a ranked opponent in three straight seasons for the first time since a run from 1988 to 1995. His 15 wins as an underdog since 2021 are second in the country.
The Illini are 15-4 at Gies over the last three seasons and 8-2 after bye weeks under Bielema. Even so, the coach sounded like someone who still expects more.
"I thought this team could do a lot better than what we've done," Bielema said.
Next on the schedule for Illinois was a trip to Maryland on Saturday, Oct. 31. Oregon had a Halloween home game against No. 24 Northwestern.
The last word
Oregon came to Champaign riding a pile of streaks and built a 10-point lead. Illinois answered with a freshman quarterback, a running back who only needed one carry to change the game, and a defense that would not let the Ducks inside the 20 after halftime.
Lanning said it best. Illinois was the tougher team, and the second half proved it.
