Rocket Classic Round 3: Davis Riley Birdies the Last Two to Grab a One-Shot Lead

Davis Riley closed a bogey-free 63 with birdies at 17 and 18 to take a one-shot lead over Michael Brennan into the final round of the last Rocket Classic.

Davis Riley arrived in Detroit with 10 missed cuts this season and a FedExCup number, No. 146, that looked more like a zip code than a Playoff ticket. Riley leaves Saturday with the 54-hole lead at the final Rocket Classic.

Riley shot a bogey-free, 7-under 63, closing with birdies on the last two holes to reach 15-under 195 and take a one-shot lead over Michael Brennan (64). Rasmus Højgaard, who matched the course record with a 61, sits three back at 12 under alongside Chris Kirk, Rickie Fowler and Cameron Young. Four players are at 11 under, including Xander Schauffele and Michael Thorbjornsen.

The Finish That Flipped It

Riley's surge came late. On the par-5 17th, Riley poured in a 54-foot birdie putt, then followed it with a 10-footer at the 18th to pull level with Brennan at the top.

The tie did not last. Brennan's 9-foot par putt at the 18th slid by, the only bogey on an otherwise excellent card, and that left Riley alone on top with one round to play.

The numbers behind Riley's round are tidy. Riley hit 17 of 18 greens, has gone 36 straight holes without a bogey, and the 63 is one shot off a career-low 62 from the 2022 Valspar Championship. The 195 total matches the best 54-hole score of Riley's career in an individual stroke-play event, and only two players in the field have gained more strokes putting this week.

"There's been a lot of ups and downs," Riley said, per the AP. "I'm just excited that I've started to put the things together and have a chance."

A Season on the Line

The stakes for Riley are hard to overstate. A two-time TOUR winner whose last title came at the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge, Riley missed the cut at last week's 3M Open and entered the week far outside the top 70 who advance to the FedExCup Playoffs. A win would move Riley to a projected 61st, per Golf Today, and solve the whole problem at once.

There is a cautionary note in the record, too. Riley led the Sony Open after 54 holes earlier this year, closed with a 71 and finished tied for sixth. Sunday in Detroit is a chance to rewrite that ending.

Brennan Stays Hot

Brennan has been the most entertaining player in the field all week. After Thursday's eight straight birdies, the 24-year-old former Wake Forest player made seven more on Saturday, and the bogey at the last was the only blemish. Brennan is chasing a second TOUR win and a first since the 2024 Bank of Utah Championship, and came to Detroit at No. 106 in the FedExCup standings, which makes Sunday plenty meaningful.

Højgaard Joins the 61 Club

Three days, three 61s. Højgaard became the third player this week to post the course-record number, following Peter Malnati on Thursday and Young on Friday. It was a bogey-free round and the lowest of Højgaard's career, coming in the Dane's 183rd round on TOUR.

The context makes it wilder. Højgaard had missed three straight cuts and started Saturday at only 3 under, barely inside the weekend. One trip around Detroit Golf Club later, Højgaard is three back and very much in the conversation for a first TOUR title.

Big Names, Mixed Days

Young started Saturday in the final group with a share of the lead and could not find the same gear. The world No. 3, playing for the first time since finishing runner-up at The Open, missed 11-footers for birdie at the 1st and 3rd and sprayed a drive onto a berm right of the 2nd. A 68 kept Young in range at 12 under, but the fireworks stayed in the box.

Fowler shot 67 and is three back, chasing a second Rocket Classic title three years after the first, which is still the most recent of six TOUR wins. Kirk posted a steady 66 to join the group at 12 under. Schauffele added a 67 and is four back, and Thorbjornsen shot 66 to sit alongside Schauffele, Michael Kim and Kristoffer Ventura at 11 under.

Friday's co-leaders went the wrong way. Patrick Cantlay shot 70 and slid five back as the putter cooled sharply, ranking 67th of 73 players in Strokes Gained: Putting on Saturday after sitting inside the top 15 through two rounds. Patrick Fishburn had a rough day with a 74 and fell to 6 under. Malnati, the first-round leader, also shot 74 and dropped to 4 under.

Sunday's Setup

Ten players are within four shots of the lead. The leader is a player fighting for a season. The player one back has already shown the ability to make birdies in bunches. Behind them are a record-matching Dane, a world No. 3, a hometown favorite in Fowler and one of the game's elite in Schauffele.

The last Rocket Classic gets one more round. Riley has the pole position, and the field has 18 holes to decide whether the farewell ends with a comeback story or something else entirely.
