Scottie Scheffler Wins THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson With a Record-Tying 253
Scottie Scheffler closed with a 63 to win his hometown event wire to wire at 31-under 253, eight shots clear and level with the PGA TOUR's 72-hole scoring record.

The only thing Scottie Scheffler could not do at TPC Craig Ranch this week was own a record by himself. Everything else, he took.
Scheffler closed with an 8-under 63 on Sunday to win THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson at 31-under 253, eight shots clear of Erik van Rooyen. The world No. 1 went wire to wire at his hometown event, ended his winless start to 2025 and matched the lowest 72-hole total in PGA TOUR history. Van Rooyen also shot 63 to finish alone in second at 23 under, Sam Stevens (64) took third at 20 under and Jordan Spieth fired a closing 62 to finish fourth at 19 under.
A Front Nine That Ended the Suspense
Scheffler started Sunday with an eight-shot lead, which tied the 54-hole record at this event, and for a moment the margin actually shrank. An early bogey trimmed the gap to six. That was as close as anyone got all day.
What followed was a clinic. Scheffler made five birdies on the front nine, then eagled the par-5 9th for the second time this week to turn in 30. Van Rooyen matched that 30 on the front and gained exactly nothing for the effort. When you play nine holes in 6 under while chasing the best player in the world and lose no ground, it is not your week.
The back nine was a victory lap with birdies at the 11th, 14th and 15th. Through 16 holes, Scheffler stood at 32 under with the record in his hands.
The Record That Got Away
Then came the only real drama of the afternoon. At the par-3 17th, Scheffler's chip rolled back off the green and he made bogey. At the par-5 18th, he played out of a greenside bunker to 8 feet, and the birdie putt that would have given him sole ownership of the scoring record slid past the left edge. He tapped in for par and a 253.
That ties the PGA TOUR record for 72 holes, tracked since 1983, shared with Justin Thomas at the 2017 Sony Open and Ludvig Åberg at the 2023 RSM Classic. Both of those came on par-70 courses. Thomas was clearly paying attention. Per the PGA TOUR, Thomas texted CBS analyst Colt Knost asking him to pass along a request that Scheffler just make bogey-par and tie the record, adding that 31 under was just fine. Scheffler did exactly that, though not on purpose.
The 31-under total is also the lowest score to par in any TOUR event other than The Sentry, beating Dustin Johnson's 30 under at the 2020 Northern Trust, the event now known as the FedEx St. Jude Championship, according to the PGA TOUR.
By the Numbers
Scheffler gained 12.811 strokes on approach for the week, the best in the field and the second-best approach week of his career behind the 2024 Memorial. He ranked third off the tee and sixth in putting. That is what a complete game looks like.
The eight-shot margin is the largest on TOUR since Johnson's 11-shot win that same week, and the second-largest in the history of this event behind Sam Snead's 10-shot win in 1957, when the tournament was the Dallas Open Invitational. His 253 smashed the tournament scoring record of 259 set by Steven Bowditch in 2015. He is the first wire-to-wire winner on TOUR since Lee Hodges at the 2023 3M Open, and the first at this event since Tom Watson in 1980.
It was his 14th career PGA TOUR win and his first stroke-play title in his home state, at the same event where he made his first TOUR start in 2014 at 17.
"It feels like a lifetime of hard work and sacrifice for little moments like these, and they're pretty special," Scheffler said, per the PGA TOUR.
Van Rooyen Wins the Other Tournament
Van Rooyen deserves real credit for a 63 that never let up, and second place came with full runner-up FedExCup points that, per CBS Sports, moved the South African from outside the top 125 to just outside the top 50 in the standings.
"Scottie was practically flawless, which is kind of what you expect from the world No. 1," van Rooyen said, per CBS Sports.
Stevens bounced back from a four-bogey Saturday with his best round of the week. A 64 got Stevens to 20 under and solo third.
Spieth's Sunday Fireworks
Spieth had the round of the day. Teeing off two hours ahead of the leaders, Spieth shot 62, tying his career low on TOUR, and climbed 19 spots on the leaderboard into fourth. Spieth's 62 and Scheffler's opening 61 were the two lowest rounds of the tournament. Spieth admitted to getting a fortunate break at the 18th, where a shot he thought was in the water stayed dry and turned into a birdie.
A big crowd of contenders finished tied for fifth at 17 under: Sam Burns, Mark Hubbard, Will Gordon, Eric Cole, Kurt Kitayama, Ricky Castillo, Adam Schenk and Takumi Kanaya.
Back to Normal, Which Is Terrifying
For four months, the question around Scheffler was what was missing. The answer, it turns out, was nothing. Five top 10s without a win were a warning, not a slump. He arrived home, made 61 on Thursday, survived a six-hour storm delay and a finish in the dark, and left with the trophy and a share of the record book.
The PGA Championship at Quail Hollow is two weeks away. Scheffler heads there with his first win of the season, the best approach week in the field and a reminder to everyone else of what his ceiling looks like.
