The Genesis Invitational Round 2: Marco Penge and Jacob Bridgeman Share the Lead at Riviera
Marco Penge and Jacob Bridgeman each shot 64 on a marathon Friday at Riviera to share the Genesis Invitational lead at 12 under, one ahead of Rory McIlroy.

Riviera turned 100 this week, and on Friday it handed the keys to two players who had barely met the place.
Marco Penge and Jacob Bridgeman each shot 7-under 64 in the second round of The Genesis Invitational to sit tied at 12-under 130 through 36 holes. Rory McIlroy, who added a 65 to his opening 66, is one shot back at 11 under. Xander Schauffele (65) and Adam Scott, whose 63 was the low round of the day, are tied for fourth at 9 under. Min Woo Lee and Max Greyserman are another shot back at 8 under, and a crowd of four sits at 7 under, including Tommy Fleetwood and Kurt Kitayama.
A Long Friday, Twice
Friday was really two golf days stapled together. Thursday's rain delay, which we covered in our Round 1 recap, stretched the opening round past darkness, and 30 players had to come back at 7 a.m. Friday to finish it. Aaron Rai had been 6 under through 16 when the horn sounded Thursday evening. Rai signed for a 66, which made the first-round lead a four-way share at 5 under among Rai, McIlroy, Bridgeman and Penge, who also wrapped up his opening 66 on Friday morning. Then everybody turned around and played 18 more.
Penge Gets There First
Penge is 27, ranked 33rd in the world and making his 11th PGA TOUR start. In his Genesis debut, he played the second round without a bogey, closing with five birdies over his final seven holes to become the first player to reach 12 under.
The Englishman was the leading DP World Tour player to earn a PGA TOUR card this year, and he has been soaking up the room. "Going for lunch on Tuesday and standing in the queue behind Tiger Woods is pretty cool," Penge said, per the tournament.
It has not been a breezy month away from the course, either. "It's been quite tough, to be fair, the last four weeks for me and my family," Penge said, per the AP. His ball-striking has not noticed. CBS Sports had Penge leading the field in strokes gained off the tee through two rounds.
Bridgeman's Finishing Kick
Bridgeman's path to 130 had a pattern. For the second straight day, the 26-year-old eagled the first hole, and over the two rounds Bridgeman played Riviera's final three holes in 5 under, including three straight birdies to close Friday. The last one came from a 215-yard 5-iron into a cool breeze on 18 that settled 8 feet from the hole.
Not bad for someone whose first look at the course came on a rain-soaked Wednesday. Bridgeman's read on the putting surfaces was simple: "It's shocking how soft they are and how fast they are," he said, per the AP. That combination rewards anyone rolling it well, and CBS Sports credited Bridgeman with 7.4 strokes gained putting through 36 holes.
"I'm excited to be back in the hunt trying to get a win," Bridgeman said, per the tournament.
McIlroy, Minus the Ocean
A week after McIlroy's card at Pebble Beach carried three double bogeys and a triple, he has made one bogey in 36 holes at Riviera. His 65 featured an eagle on the par-5 11th, birdies on the other two par 5s, a 6-foot birdie on 17, and a birdie on the par-3 fourth for the second straight day.
McIlroy had the line of the day on why Riviera suits him better than the cliffs of Monterey. "There's no Pacific Ocean to hit it into around this golf course, so that helps," he said, per the AP. Through two rounds he ranked third in the field in strokes gained approach and fourth in putting, per CBS Sports.
Scott's Throwback and the Cut
Scott, a two-time winner of this event, was the day's biggest mover. The 63 included two eagles, five birdies and one bogey, and Scott was 9 under through 13 holes before scrambling home over the final hour. "It's probably my best round out here," Scott said, per the tournament.
Scottie Scheffler supplied the drama at the other end of the board. After a 5-over start through his first 10 holes Thursday, the worst 10-hole start of his career on TOUR according to Golf Channel, Scheffler finished the first round with a 74. He was still 4 over for the tournament with 10 holes left in the second round. Then came three straight birdies around the turn, another at the par-5 17th, and a 7-foot par putt on 18 that curled in to make the cut on the number. "I started the day not where I wanted to," Scheffler said, per the AP. His 68 left him at even par, 12 shots back.
As one of the Signature Events with a 36-hole cut, the Genesis kept the top 50 and ties plus anyone within 10 shots of the lead. The line fell at even-par 142, and 51 players advanced. Two 2026 TOUR winners, Chris Gotterup and Justin Rose, went home at 3 over, along with Russell Henley, Keegan Bradley, J.J. Spaun and Jason Day.
The Weekend Stakes
Here is the weekend math. Two players without a PGA TOUR win share the lead at a $20 million Signature Event. Directly behind them is McIlroy, looking as composed as he has all season, and behind him sit Scott, a two-time winner here, and Schauffele.
Riviera rewards patience, and Saturday will tell us whether the newcomers can keep holing putts with a major champion one swing behind them.
