Travelers Championship Round 3: Viktor Hovland Flips It on the 18th Green to Lead Scottie Scheffler

Viktor Hovland birdied the last for a 64 while Scottie Scheffler three-putted for bogey, giving Hovland a one-shot lead at 20 under heading into Sunday at TPC River Highlands.

All Saturday, Scottie Scheffler never trailed at the Travelers Championship. Then on the 18th green, Viktor Hovland walked in a 6-footer, Scheffler three-putted from the fringe, and the whole tournament flipped.

Hovland shot 6-under 64 on Saturday at TPC River Highlands to reach 20-under 190 and take a one-shot lead over Scheffler, who closed with a bogey for a 67. Patrick Cantlay (64) and Akshay Bhatia (67) are tied for third, five back at 15 under. Behind them, a five-way tie at 13 under includes Wyndham Clark, Ben Griffin, Eric Cole, Matt Fitzpatrick and Shane Lowry. After two days of trading low numbers, this has become a two-player fight with one round to go.

The Fast Start

Hovland began the day two behind and wasted no time. He needed only four holes, three of them birdies, to pull level with Scheffler, per the AP. From there the final pairing turned into a standoff. The two leaders matched each other mostly par for par, each adding two birdies and a bogey in that stretch, and neither could shake the other.

Scheffler found the next gear first. At the 14th, he hit a lob wedge to 2 feet to retake the lead. On the reachable par-4 15th, both players went up and down from the front of the green, with Scheffler's chip floating up the slope and trickling right to the hole. It looked, for a moment, like the 36-hole leader was settling things down.

The 18th Changed Everything

The finishing hole at River Highlands is built for this. Hovland got up and down from 112 yards, leaving himself about 6 feet and holing it for birdie. Scheffler's ball sat on the fringe 25 feet away. His first putt ran about 8 feet past, and the comeback putt missed. Bogey for Scheffler, birdie for Hovland, a two-shot swing on the last hole and the first time all day Scheffler found himself behind.

Hovland made seven birdies on the day, three on the front and four on the back, per Field Level Media. The 64 follows a 61 on Friday that matched his best round on TOUR.

"It's been a while since I've been in this position," Hovland said, per the AP.

That is true. Hovland's last TOUR win came at the 2025 Valspar Championship, and the stretch since has included plenty of searching.

Vikings at River Highlands

Saturday also had an unexpected soundtrack. A Norwegian contingent drove over from Boston, where Norway had just lost to France at the World Cup, and made itself heard all afternoon. Hovland gave them plenty of reasons to break out the "row," the chant Norway's supporters have turned into a World Cup staple.

"I mean, we're Vikings, so it's kind of in our DNA," Hovland said, adding that it was the first time he had seen it in person.

Hovland was locked in on the math, though. "The beauty of this golf course is that I think Scottie and I have separated ourselves from the rest of the field," he said, before noting that players at 14 or 15 under can still get involved with a very low round. "So we still have to go out there and play very similar to what we did today," he said. "Otherwise, we're bringing in a lot more guys."

Scheffler's Calm

If the last hole stung, Scheffler did not show it. He is chasing his first win since The American Express in January, and for the second straight year at this event he has slipped from the top of the board on Saturday. A year ago he opened his Saturday with a triple bogey, shot 72 and fell nine back. This time he sits one shot behind with the hottest player of the weekend alongside him.

"This is a golf course where you can see some numbers be shot. You know, guys can shoot pretty low," Scheffler said. "Going into tomorrow just try to execute, have a good round, and see where that puts me."

The Rest of the Board

Cantlay's 64 was one of the best rounds of the day and gets him to 15 under, while Bhatia was 4 under through eight holes before playing the rest of the round 1 over to settle for 67. Keith Mitchell shot 63 to reach 12 under. Brian Harman and Chris Gotterup also shot 63 and sit at 11 under alongside Collin Morikawa, who posted 64. Clark shot 65 and is quietly lurking at 13 under. Defending champion Keegan Bradley shot 70, his highest score of the week, and is at 8 under.

Cole, who led after Thursday, shot 69 and is seven back.

Sunday Setup

The final Signature Event of the regular season now comes down to a final-group showdown between a player chasing his first win in more than a year and the most consistent player on the PGA TOUR this season. Five shots is a lot to make up on two players playing this well, but River Highlands has a 58 and a 59 in its history. The chase pack will need something special. The leaders will need to keep doing what they have done all week.
