Brooklyn had gotten used to a certain soundtrack this summer: nets snapping, the scoreboard rolling past 80, the postgame playlist on repeat. On Thursday night the Golden State Valkyries found the mute button.

Cecilia Zandalasini scored 20 points, Veronica Burton handed out a season-high 13 assists without a single turnover, and Golden State smothered the New York Liberty 79-60 at Barclays Center. The win wrapped up a 3-0 season sweep, and it came with a stinger. Per the Associated Press, the Valkyries are the only opponent New York has not beaten this season.

A Shootout That Never Showed Up

Early on, this looked like the usual Liberty track meet. Golden State opened with eight straight points for an 11-4 cushion, and New York fired right back with an 11-0 burst to grab a 15-11 edge. When the Liberty went up 19-15 with about a minute and a half left in the first quarter, the 17,579 in the building had every reason to settle in for a long, loud night.

That four-point edge turned out to be New York's biggest lead of the game. The Valkyries closed the period with a 9-0 push that spilled into the second quarter for a 24-19 advantage, then took over. Golden State won the second quarter 21-11, the team counted a 24-8 run inside the frame, and the visitors walked into halftime up 42-30.

The third quarter reads 17-17 on the line score, which undersells how it felt. Golden State started the half with an 11-6 spurt to push the margin to 17, and the Liberty never really got off the mat. The Valkyries scored the final two points of the third and the first six of the fourth, an 8-0 stretch that made it 65-47. Gabby Williams drained a 25-footer off a Burton dish with 4:28 left for a 74-55 lead, and Ashten Prechtel splashed a 3 with 34.4 seconds remaining to set the final.

Zandalasini Struck Early, Burton Never Stopped

Zandalasini did her damage before the crowd found its seats. She had 14 of her 20 points by halftime, including all four of her 3-pointers, and finished 8 of 17 from the field. The Valkyries said the eight makes set a career high and that it was her fourth career 20-point game. Her second quarter was downright disrespectful: she scored 11 points in the period, the same number the entire Liberty roster managed.

Burton was the conductor. Thirteen assists, zero turnovers and a plus-17 in 27 minutes. By the team's count, her passes set up six 3-pointers and seven two-point baskets, good for 32 points. New York finished with 14 assists as a team. Golden State also noted that Burton became just the third player this season to post at least 13 assists with no turnovers in a game, after Jordin Canada and Julie Allemand, and only the second in WNBA history to do it more than once, alongside Courtney Vandersloot. That is a stat line you frame and hang in the hallway.

Williams chipped in 16 points on four 3-pointers, and Tiffany Hayes poured in 12 in just 13 minutes off the bench, going 5 of 6 at the line. Kiah Stokes scored two points but grabbed nine rebounds and handed out four assists, the kind of night that never trends on social media and always shows up in film sessions.

For New York, Jonquel Jones did what she could with 18 points, 4-of-6 shooting from deep and three blocks. Breanna Stewart scored 16, though eight of those came at the free-throw line and she went 4 of 10 from the field. Sabrina Ionescu could not find the bottom of the net, shooting 2 of 12 overall and 1 of 9 from 3-point range for seven points. Leonie Fiebich was 1 of 7.

The Turning Point: Nine Straight to Flip the Script

The whole game pivoted on a span of about three minutes. Down 19-15 late in the first, Golden State answered with nine unanswered points across the quarter break, and New York spent the rest of the night chasing. The Valkyries led for 89% of the game, and once they had the scoreboard, their defense turned every Liberty trip into a pop quiz with no right answers. New York shot 30% from the field, and the 3-pointers that usually rescue this team kept rattling out.

The Numbers That Tell It

  • 13-33 vs. 7-31 from deep. Golden State outscored New York by 18 points from beyond the arc.
  • 23 assists to 14. The Valkyries moved it; the Liberty mostly went one-on-one.
  • 19 of 63. New York's 30% shooting night was the whole story.
  • 30-12 bench edge. Hayes alone matched the entire Liberty second unit.
  • 39-32 on the glass. Golden State cleaned up 31 defensive rebounds and limited second chances.

What It Means

Golden State improved to 28-11, including 13-6 on the road, and has won three in a row. The Valkyries also swept their first back-to-back of the season, following an 89-64 rout in Connecticut on Wednesday with this one. Across three meetings, they held the Liberty to 70, 67 and 60 points, which the AP said are New York's three lowest totals of the season. The first two went the same way: an 87-70 win at Barclays Center in May and a 76-67 win at Chase Center in late June. Three games, three double-digit wins, zero drama.

The Liberty dropped to 23-16, and two streaks died in one night. A six-game home winning streak ended, and so did a run of 16 consecutive games with at least 80 points, which the AP said was the longest such stretch in franchise history. Sixty is a long way from 80.

The Valkyries visit Portland on Sunday. The Liberty host Chicago on Saturday.

Final Word

Every video game has a final boss, the one that makes you chuck the controller no matter how leveled-up you think your character is. New York has the star power and the scoring numbers to prove it. Golden State just keeps showing up in lavender, guarding like the rent is due, and sending the Liberty back to the start screen.
