Wyndham Championship Round 2: Beau Hossler Holds On as the Bubble Gets Brutal
Beau Hossler shot 67 to reach 12 under and lead the Wyndham Championship by one over Ben James and Jordan Smith, while Keegan Bradley survived the cut on the number and Jason Day's Playoffs streak ended.

Friday at Sedgefield was less about who was leading and more about who was still breathing. Beau Hossler kept the top spot. Plenty of others spent the afternoon staring at a projected cut line and a FedExCup number that refused to sit still.
Hossler followed his opening 61 with a 3-under 67, holing an 11-foot birdie putt on his final hole to reach 12-under 128 and take a one-shot lead into the weekend at the Wyndham Championship. Ben James (67) and England's Jordan Smith (64) are tied for second at 11-under 129. Ten players are bunched at 9-under 131, including Michael Brennan, Sahith Theegala, Alex Noren, Alex Smalley and Billy Horschel.
Hossler Grinds, Doesn't Fade
After a 61, the danger is always the hangover round. Hossler never really had one. The 67 was not a fireworks show, but it kept him in front, and a 140-yard approach that set up birdie at the ninth was the kind of quality iron play that turns a decent day into a good one.
The final putt mattered. Without it, Hossler shares the lead with two players. With it, he sleeps on top. For a player who started the week at No. 122 in the standings and needs his first PGA TOUR win to reach the Playoffs, every one of those small edges carries weight into Saturday.
James Starts Loud, Smith Goes Low
Ben James did not ease into his day. Starting on the 10th, James holed out for eagle on the very first hole, then played the remaining 17 in 1 under to post a second straight solid number. The PGA TOUR University standout has been here before in a sense: James held the 36-hole lead at the RBC Canadian Open earlier this summer and finished outside the top 50. Saturday is a chance to write a different ending.
Smith had the round of the day among the leaders, a 64 that jumped the Englishman into a share of second. The stakes are real for Smith, too. At No. 68 in the FedExCup standings, Smith is inside the line but nowhere near comfortable, and a good weekend here takes care of a lot of worry.
The pack at 9 under is where the volume is. Brennan's 65 was quietly one of the better rounds of the day and put him three back. Noren, David Skinns and Rico Hoey also shot 65 and Smalley posted 64 to join that group, and Theegala cooled off with a 69 after Thursday's wild 62.
Bradley Survives by a Hair
The best drama of the day happened nowhere near the lead. Keegan Bradley, No. 72 in the standings, birdied three of his last six holes for a 67 and finished at 3-under 137. Then he had to wait.
"I hope I get a shot this weekend to go out there and shoot some low scores and make the playoffs," Bradley said when he finished, per the AP.
The cut fell at 3 under, a tie for 64th, after Davis Chatfield bogeyed the final hole of the day to move the number. Christiaan Bezuidenhout missed a 20-foot birdie try on the last hole of the round, and Ben Kohles missed from 15 feet to close out a round as well. Either putt would have sent Bradley home, along with Andrew Putnam (No. 73) and Austin Smotherman (No. 76). All three live to fight on Saturday.
Jordan Spieth, already locked into the postseason at No. 55, made a cut-line escape of the dramatic variety, saving par with a 25-foot putt on the final hole after a tee shot into the trees. Defending champion Cameron Young also made the cut on the number after Thursday's 71.
The Weekend Gets Smaller
Not everyone got the reprieve. Jason Day, No. 75 in the standings, was never under par over two days and missed the cut by seven shots, ending a streak of 18 straight postseason appearances.
"It was a good streak obviously, but I would have loved to keep the streak going," Day said.
Mac Meissner might have the most painful story of the day. Sitting at No. 71 and one shot inside the projected cut at 4 under, Meissner three-putted the 18th from about 45 feet for a double bogey and missed the weekend by one. Steven Fisk, who began the week at No. 69, shot 70 to finish at 2-over 142 and missed the cut, which leaves Fisk sitting at home with no way to add points.
Koivun Steady, Koepka Lurking
Jackson Koivun, holding the 70th and final spot, made the cut with two shots to spare at 5-under 135. For a player who turned pro in June and won the 3M Open in only a third start, the weekend is about keeping the card clean and protecting a position.
Brooks Koepka sits in a different spot entirely. Koepka shot 66 to reach 7-under 133 and a tie for 21st, but at No. 86 in the standings, the math is brutal: Koepka can only get into the top 70 if no more than three players finish ahead. That means a big Saturday is required, not optional.
Saturday's Stakes
Hossler leads by one with 36 holes to go and still needs to win. James needs to win. Brennan, Smith, Bradley, Koivun and a long list of others need something less than that but still something real. Sedgefield has been generous enough to allow a charge from almost anywhere on the first page, and moving day in the final week of the regular season tends to make people do brave things.
