Broncos vs. Chargers: Jim Harbaugh's Fourth-Down Gamble Backfires as Denver Rallies in Week 5
One stuffed fourth-and-1 flipped everything: the Broncos scored the final 13 points to beat the Chargers 23-17 and drop Jim Harbaugh's team to 0-5.

Jim Harbaugh went looking for someone to blame after the game and settled on the one guy in the building he cannot bench. "Can't think of a time where I've ever been more mad at myself," the Chargers coach said.
He had his reasons. Harbaugh kept his offense on the field for a fourth-and-1 at his own 41 early in the fourth quarter, Justin Herbert's sneak got stuffed, and the Denver Broncos scored the final 13 points to beat Los Angeles 23-17 on Sunday at SoFi Stadium in Week 5. Denver moved to 3-2. The Chargers fell to 0-5 for the first time since 2003, according to the AP.
A Rock Fight Until the Fourth
For three quarters this was a game played in a phone booth. Charlie Kolar's first career fumble, punched out by Talanoa Hufanga and recovered by Brandon Jones on the Chargers' opening possession, set up a 2-yard J.K. Dobbins touchdown that was also his first rushing score of the season. Cameron Dicker answered with a 42-yard field goal, and Wil Lutz hit from 34 on a 14-play Denver drive during which Harbaugh lost two challenges. Denver led 10-3 at the half.
Then the Chargers woke up. They opened the third quarter with a 14-play, 73-yard march that ate 9:28, highlighted by Herbert keeping the ball on a 23-yard sweep in his 100th career game. Hayden Rucci caught a 7-yard pass for his first career touchdown, and it was 10-10. Late in the quarter, Tuli Tuipulotu forced and recovered a Bo Nix fumble on a scramble, and Kimani Vidal sprinted 42 yards for a touchdown on the very next snap. Los Angeles led 17-10.
Denver's next real chance came after a 26-yard Marvin Mims Jr. punt return to the Chargers' 27, and Lutz pushed a 42-yarder wide left. Per Next Gen Stats via the Broncos' website, Denver's win probability dropped to 15 percent early in the fourth quarter.
That is exactly when Harbaugh rolled the dice.
The Broncos Defense Takes Over
After Jahdae Barron stopped Herbert just short on third down, Que Robinson and company stonewalled the fourth-down sneak. Five plays later, Nix stood in against pressure and found Courtland Sutton in the back of the end zone for a 5-yard score. According to Denver's website, it was Sutton's first touchdown of the season. Tie game, 17-17, with 8:53 left.
The Chargers' next possession lasted two plays. Zach Allen got home, knocked the ball out of Herbert's hands, and Robinson recovered at the LA 23. Next Gen Stats, via the Broncos, credited that strip-sack with the biggest boost of Denver's day, lifting its odds from 50 to 71 percent. The drive stalled at the 1, but Lutz's 19-yarder made it 20-17 with 5:07 to play.
Los Angeles went for it again on fourth-and-6 from its own 31. Herbert threw toward Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Brandon Jones jumped the route, and Lutz added a 36-yarder with 1:08 left. Ja'Quan McMillian sacked Herbert on the final snap before a Hail Mary could happen.
Robinson was the quiet hero of the quarter. "We are practicing what we preach, basically," he said. Jones finished with a fumble recovery and an interception, Nik Bonitto had two of Denver's five sacks, and Dobbins ground out 68 yards on 18 carries.
Nix was not pretty, going 16 of 27 for 123 yards and a touchdown, but he understood exactly what the defense had handed him. "That was basically a turnover," Nix said of the fourth-down stop. "I know it doesn't count as one, but that's basically a turnover when you get a short field."
The Fourth-and-1 That Broke LA
Herbert finished 14 of 24 for 121 yards with a touchdown and an interception, ran six times for 54 yards, and was sacked five times behind an offensive line that featured four rookies. He has now committed a turnover in five consecutive games, tying his career record per the AP. He took the failed sneak personally. "Got to find a way to get a yard and I didn't do that," he said.
Harbaugh, though, would not let anybody else take it. "When I saw them gap down, I felt like I should call timeout out there and punt the ball," he said. "Right now, the only thing I can think of is that I screwed that up."
Broncos coach Sean Payton saw the same play from the happy side. "And we forced a four-and-out on a QB sneak. So, essentially, four big game changers," he said, counting the stop alongside Denver's three takeaways.
The Math of an Ugly Win
- 13: Denver points off its three takeaways, per the Broncos' website.
- 15: Percent, Denver's win probability early in the fourth quarter, per Next Gen Stats.
- 1-for-12: Denver on third down. Yes, it still won.
- 9-93: Chargers penalties and yards.
- 16 of 45: Harbaugh's career record on challenges after losing two Sunday, according to the AP.
Payton's Headset, Harbaugh's Hole
For Denver, this was a first AFC West win of the season, and it came in Payton's first game since taking play-calling duties back from offensive coordinator Davis Webb earlier in the week. Nix called the switch "smooth." Payton was blunter about the offense. "There were some things that were good," he said, "and then specifically staying on the field and just converting four or five more third downs."
The Broncos also won without injured cornerbacks Pat Surtain II and Riley Moss, then lost Hufanga to an ankle injury in the third quarter. Per the AP, it was Denver's first win at SoFi Stadium since 2023, with plenty of orange in the stands to enjoy it. The defending champion Seahawks visit Thursday.
For the Chargers, 0-5 means they are one of three winless teams in the league, and next up is a trip to AFC West-leading Kansas City. Four rookie linemen, a quarterback who keeps getting hit, and a coach publicly second-guessing himself is not a recipe for a quick turnaround.
Madden Settings Were Not Adjusted
Every Madden player has gone for it on fourth-and-1 in their own territory because the vibes felt right. Harbaugh did it in real life, in a one-score game, with an 0-5 start on the line, and owned it afterward.
Rookie lineman Jake Slaughter offered the only path forward. "We're just going to keep swinging," he said. In Los Angeles, the next swing had better connect.
