Payton Gottshall threw 4.1 scoreless innings of relief and Megan Grant hit her league-leading eighth home run of the season as the Portland Cascade defeated the Chicago Bandits 5-4 on Sunday at Hillsboro Ballpark, salvaging the final game of their three-game series and snapping Chicago's nine-game winning streak.

Portland struck early, pushing runs across in the first and second innings, and never trailed. The Cascade finished with eight hits, including home runs from Grant and Tori Vidales, but could not add insurance runs the rest of the way, leaving the finish to the pitching staff.

Gottshall entered in relief and scattered three hits over 4.1 scoreless frames to earn the win, her second of the season against one loss, according to the league's official box score. The outing was her strongest of the year against a Chicago lineup that entered the day as the league's best-hitting team.

The victory was Portland's only win against Chicago in seven meetings this season. The Bandits had taken the first two games of the series, 8-6 and 2-0, to extend their winning streak to nine before Sunday's loss dropped them to 13-8. The Cascade improved to 12-9.

A Series Salvaged

For an expansion franchise in its first AUSL season, the win carried weight beyond the standings. Portland had managed just one victory in six previous tries against the Bandits, and Sunday's result showed the Cascade could hold a lead against the league's most productive offense.

Portland's pitching has been the backbone of its inaugural campaign, and Gottshall's relief performance added another entry to a growing list of strong outings from the staff. The Cascade will need more of the same as the season moves toward the postseason, with a rematch against Chicago looming as a likely playoff preview.
