HILLSBORO, Ore. -- Postseason math on the line. A Game 1 loss to erase. Five innings was all Portland needed. On July 18 at Hillsboro Ballpark, the Portland Cascade run-ruled the Texas Volts 10-1 behind two Megan Grant home runs that tied Maya Brady for the AUSL single-season record of 10.

Korbe Otis added a two-run shot. Kenleigh Cahalan cleared the bases with a three-RBI triple. Sam Landry and Payton Gottshall handled the circle. The Cascade improved to 14-11 and handed their home fans a finale worth the wait after falling 7-2 the night before.

The Avalanche

Landry walked the bases loaded in the first and still escaped with two strikeouts. NiJaree Canady then walked the Cascade bases loaded after a Sierra Sacco-Ferrie single, and Cahalan tripled them all home for 3-0. In the second, Mia Davidson walked with two outs and Otis crushed a two-run homer to left. Canady was done. Aliyah Binford entered. Score: 5-0.

Texas scratched one across in the third on back-to-back doubles from Danieca Coffey and Tiare Jennings. Kendra Falby then threw Jennings out at home from center on a Jackie Lis single, and Sacco-Ferrie ended the inning with a foul-territory catch. Damage limited.

Grant led off the third with her ninth homer of the season -- 6-1. Landry finished three innings of one-run ball with three strikeouts. Gottshall took over in the fourth and escaped traffic. In the bottom half, Tori Vidales singled, advanced on an error, Davidson drove in a run, and Grant smashed a three-run shot for her 10th of the year. Run-rule territory. Gottshall closed the fifth with a game-ending double play after a Dejah Mulipola single.

What It Means

Grant's record-tying 10th homer is the league-wide headline. Otis' blast and Cahalan's bases-clearing triple are the supporting fireworks. Landry's return to the circle after questions about her next look gave Portland the start it needed. Gottshall's multi-inning bridge continues a stretch of high-leverage reliability.

The Cascade now wait on Oklahoma City Spark results against Carolina Blaze to learn if a play-in ticket is punched. Coach Tairia Flowers called the waiting game stressful and the home finale proud. Both fit. A 10-1 statement after a 7-2 stumble is how you want to close a home slate with the postseason on the bubble.

The Close

Some must-win vibes produce grinders. This one produced a run rule. Cahalan tripled. Otis went deep. Grant went deep twice. Cascade 10, Volts 1 in five -- and Hillsboro Ballpark got the sendoff it deserved.

The film will show Grant's second homer and Falby's throw home. That is how these nights work -- one early bases-clearing triple, one record chase, one bullpen close, and the narrative locks in before the waiting game starts. Fans leave loud or quiet. Coaches leave with clips. Players leave knowing July does not forgive unfinished chances.

Sierra Romero took a final curtain call for Texas in a now-retired chapter. Ricci Woodard praised her professionalism. The Cascade praised their crowd. Between those two postgame notes sits a 10-1 final that keeps Portland's postseason pulse alive.
